I just finished grocery shopping and I couldn't help but laugh as I was putting my food up on the conveyor belt at the store. Boy has my shopping list changed. I still have to buy other things for my kids and hubby but for me the change is incredible. I thought I would list some things I must have now and see if others want to list some of theirs.

Eggs, (yes I had them before but never have I been so concerned with making sure I get them. I am one off those peekers now that has to check the carton and look at each egg, LOL)

heavy cream (great use instead of milk in scrambeled eggs and also if I get a craving for something sweet)

cheese and salami, (my new midnight snack)

Lettuce

ranch dressing (no more low fat dressing for this girl)

Chicken breast (throw some bacon and cheese on them and tadah!!!!!!!!!!!!dinner)

cauliflower (believe it or not, I never had this before inless it was breaded, now I can't live without it)

butter (real butter) "I can't believe it is real butter" LOL

Steaks (ribeye, new york strip, you name it)

well these are the main things that I must have now. My grocery bill is much smaller than before. For a year I was buying slim fast shakes and healthy choice meals and those are not cheap. Now I am getting real food that gives me real results and they sure do taste better than the bland low-fat foods!!!!!!!!!!

side question: I LOVE bacon, but hate cooking it. The whole apartment smells like bacon for days. Has anyone found a magic air freshner which eliminates bacon odors?

ladibug
Wed, Dec-05-01, 11:45
No, I haven't found an air freshener but I did start cooking my bacon in the microwave. A friend gave me that tip and it tastes so much better. Wrap it in paper towels and it just turns out better.

I love the answers to this question, I am making notes and maybe my next trip will include a few new items, lol

The best tip I got was on this list ... somewhere ... just shop the edges! Now there is very little I need in the aisles ... maybe a can of coffee for hubby or a box of cheese nips for my daughter.

Here's what I get for me:

Eggs (of course)
cream cheese
deli counter -- love boars head sandwich meats and cheeses
sour cream
mayo
cream
beef (steaks, hamburger, and an occasional roast)
boneless chicken breasts
lettuce
peppers red and green
frozen spinach
mushrooms
onion
plum tomato or two
Wasa crackers
bacon, but I don't eat it that often

~A thin me.
I make creamed spinach (heavy cream, cream cheese, sour cream, parmasean, garlic clove, white pepper and onion) (it tastes like Boston markets) and I make a ricotta /parma. quiche (ricotta, eggs, heavy cream, parma. and a sprinkle of cheddar). For some reason just before my TOM I crave spinach. I don't really want it any other time. :) Gina-

Yum! I love creamed spinach -- so does my daughter.
These two receipes - are they on the board or yours?
If yours, will you share them with me?

Thanks,

I was always taught that when you bake with ricotta it is best when done in an egg mixture so... Here we go. I'll give you one baked and on stove top.
If you like Boston market's cremed spinach:

Use frozen spinach 2 10oz boxes or large bag (first thaw at room temp and press dry with dish towel)
4T butter
1 cp Heavy cream (cosco has some that is mostly fat, so it thickens nicely)
1 garlic clove (chopped up)
3 thin slices of red onion (or what you prefer.)
3T sour creme
1/4 parmesan cheese
White pepper(to your taste)
salt (to taste)
Sautee in butter, the garlic, onion, and spinach until the onions are translucent (about 4-5 min), Add cream and bring to boil.
Add sour creme, pepper and stir.
Now add Parmesan and stir. You have to keep stiring through out preparation since mixture is prepared using high heat. Stir until mixture thickens (it will continue to thicken while cooling)
This is my own recipe made from taste.
ECC =13 in the whole thing / 4 = 3.25 per serving
Baked spinach
Frozen spinach (about12 oz)
5oz of Ricotta (no skim)
1cp Heavy cream
2 eggs
1/4 Parmesan
defrosted frozen spinach drained and blotted to absorb excess water (use the amount to your liking some like a lot of spinach, some don't)
salt to taste
In a bowl mix eggs, ricotta and creme. Whip a little like you would to make scrambled eggs. Add spinach, and stir. Now add Parmasan and stir. Bake covered in a caserole dish at 350 for about 40 min [ Until middle is done- when you lightly poke with a fork it should come out dry and clean]
ECC 9.55 / 4 = 2.38 per serving
I hope you guys like these two recipes. I have learned to invent things with this wol.

eggs
semi-skimmed milk (hubby prefers it)
cheese
packets of ham or other sliced cold meats - easy to take to work for lunches
red meat and chicken for cooking
tinned tuna
occasional cream and whole milk
celery
cucumber
cauliflower
peppers
pumpkin

It's interesting how much of the supermarket we never visit. Even before I started doing Atkins, we were serious foodies and bought almost no prepared stuff.
Also, I have a rule of thumb - never eat anything with a made-up name. If there are so few natural ingredients that they have to make up a name and can't admit what's in it, then it can't be good for you. For example, Sunny Delight.

My shopping list is getting very restricted because I am following an anti-candida diet, as well as avoiding foods I'm allergic/intolerant of. But the good thing is eating this way broke a 6 week 'no weight loss/no loss of inches' stall- I lost a pound! WAHOOOO!!!

I just got back from the grocery store and had a similar LOL experience as I was checking out, looking at the cashier and wondering if she was looking at my food and asking "where is the bread? the pasta? the cookies and chips?" Probably she didn't notice nor care but I found it amusing. This was what was in my cart:

eggs
sausage
bacon (as a former lowfat diehard these three items are tough for me to eat but i am working on it and getting better at it!)
broccoli
heavy cream
sugarfree jello
ground beef
cheese
mushrooms
olive oil

I don't have much new to add except for:

cottage cheese, not the low fat variety
cauliflower pickles but they are sooooo more-ish!
Concentrated individual stock serves

I can't eat eggs without bread or I get a bad 'gas' attack a few hours later so I am not eating more than say eggs six a week. Usually as an omelette or scrambled. A boiled egg will send my tummy into turmoil, and I can't imagine one fried or poached without toast! On my 'day off' I have bacon and fried eggs and a slice of multi-grain high fibre.

Also I find rich cheeses impossible to eat on their own, without a cracker or something so I am not eating those either. Kraft individual cheddars sit in the bowl in the fridge now, they are fine. It's camembert, blue and brie... that kind I can't eat on their own. I do use them in salad dressings sometimes tho.

I now buy the concentrated chicken and veggie stocks and often have a hot mug of 'soup' for lunch.

What I HAVE noticed tho, is how much my grocery bill has gone down, buying pretty much natural foods. Well, except for the cat food... that hasn't changed! Little gluttons!

I just bought a jar of Paul Newman's Ranch dressing.. does anyone have a carb count on that? It's not listed on my label or on the carb counter here.

Brie cheese!-- something I used to feel so guilty about eating.

cream, butter, love these.

green beans.

nuts(some)

bacon--feels like luxury.

meat, meat, and more meat.

Now, I look in the fridge and feel like there's going to be comfort and satiety with the next meal or snack, instead of disappointment and dissatisfaction!

Since both my wife and myself follow a Low Carb WOE there is no "not allowed" food in our refrigerator. If you were to look inside on any given day you would find:

eggs
hard cheese (Swiss and cheddar mostly, but also blue and colby)
lettuce (iceberg.romaine and leaf - we use vinegar and oil)
asparagus
broccoli
brussel sprouts
ground sirloin
sliced roast beef from the deli
pot roast (often left over from the night before)
chicken
bacon (we don't eat as much bacon as we use to - it seemed to
stall us)
butter
heavy cream (for use on sugar free jello)
real mayo
fish (lots of it if I have been fishing)
LOTS OF COLD WATER

Hi all--

Wow guys...I'm just starting induction this week and I have to admit I hadn't thought much about what my list will be. This will be a real change for me. Before my cart was full of low fat stuff, but albeit mostly healthy things; brown rice, all sorts of beans, and of course the non-fat dressings, low fat everything! I can't remember when I bought cream last. Someone said something about cabbage sauteed in browned butter...I can't wait! No more just steaming for this girl! Thanks for the input on this subject. I will still have to keep the other stuff i.e. bread, cereal, junk foods around for the rest of the family (3 teens and husband--all for the most part skinny). I have hope to be rid of the carb cravings soon so it won't be a problem. Off to the market!

Am I making my salads too good (hi carb) or are you people not seeing the salad light? Most of you simply list lettuce or one type of lettuce. I usually make a tri- coloured salad consisting of endive, raddichio (spelling), and either butter lettuce or romaine. On this goes extra virgin olive oil, a little salt, and shaved parmasian cheese. We should be enjoying these salads since they're almost our only carbs.

Also, very thinly sliced fennel with olive oil, salt, pepper, and red wine vinegar.

Gee, I am on the way to the grocery store and this is a great thread! I am adding cocanut milk and red Thai paste to my list. Also glad to hear that someone else loves sliced fennel in their salad.

I also grill vegies by slicing them thin and basting them with olive oil, garlic and fresh basil. In the winter I just grill them in the oven. I slice zucchini, fennel, mushrooms, peppers, eggplant and other vegies for this.

Will also make the creamed spinach - yum.

My shopping looks pretty much the same as everyone elses. Thanks for the great read!

What is up with genoa salami? Is there a brand that is better for lc than others?

gecolon
Fri, Dec-07-01, 10:08
Genoa salami, isn't a brand (it's a place in Italy) :) . It's a hard, garlic-flavored salami of pork and veal or, esp. in the U.S., pork and beef. I just like it better than plain hard salami. Just a pet peeve. Sliced thin with cream cheese....it's da' bomb.

I love "creative cooking," and finally had my first experience on LC, thanks to someone here who mentioned sauteeing cabbage in butter. I'd just bought a cabbage the night before. Here's what I did:

Cut up and fried 2 slices of bacon. Added 1 T. butter and 2 cups thinly sliced cabbage. When the cabbage was almost cooked I added a dash of heavy cream and a dollop of sour cream and stirred, bubbling, until it thickened. Some coarse ground black pepper and yum! :yum:

last week at the supermarket the lady who usually serves me told me that she cant work out how i have lost so much weight as she sees me buying the most fattening food in the store. Then she said that she was waiting for me to drop dead of a heart attact!

She is going to buy the Dr Atkins book after i told her that i was healthier than i have been for years! ( that and the breakfast cheesecake that i told her about was a deciding factor, oh and the coffee with REAL cream)

Had to add my 2 cents worth re what I always like to have on hand:

After reading this whole thread, what strikes me the most is how overall healthy the lists sound. No processed, white flour gunk. Just whole, unprocessed real food. How can people think this is a terrible way to go? Its funny that someone mentioned shopping only the perimeter of the store. I never thought about it but it is so true. I still run through the cereal aisle for my kids but that is really about it.

They only things I can add are:

soy flour, for the occasional light breading or cheese cake crust
frozen blackberries (just started this thanks to Nat - use
sparingly with a little cream cheese, cream, and Spenda)
Splenda (just started this too)
pistachios (I'm avoiding these for a couple of weeks though)
frozen chopped broccoli (with lots of butter)
pork roast with saurkraut (a must with every weekly trip)
bagged salads with Kraft's shredded garlic/parmesan
cheese :yum:
pork rinds
string cheese
hot italian sausage (with no added sugar)
steaks and chicken breasts
and every now and then I allow myself some frozen meatballs for
a quick heat and eat treat (be careful of brands though,
some are very bready and high in carbs)
Diet Coke - still a must for me
Miller Lite - for my newly LCing hubby :rheart: (and sometimes
me)

I'd love to try some almond cookies. Can you buy almond flour at the grocery store or do you have to go to a specialty store/make it on your own?

Loved seeing everyone's list. Take care!

I hate to cook so I do everything fast. While I have some chicken or turkey in the oven or steaks on the pan, I steam my frozen spinach with very little water in a sauce pan. When the meat is done, I pour the water off the spinach and then put it into the drippings until most are soaked up, and then slather it onto my plate. Yummmm....

Works very well for any kind of greens. I alos love frozen turnip, collard, and other greens this way. If I'm not cooking any meat, I'll just cut up a scallion, fry a few pieces of bacon, and dump the greens into that.

I'm still kind of new to this...one week into it. But, I have a question...Is there any jarred spaghetti sauce that will fit in the program? After reading several labels I couldn't find one that wasn't loaded with sugar. It's something I keep on hand for a quick dinner, I have teens and they are kind of picky and don't really like the homemade stuff either. BTW---no pasta for me, just a little spaghetti squash. Also, sometimes it bothers the family if what I eat doesn't look like what they are eating! This plan works fairly well and they aren't noticing too much.

I use Furmans pizza sauce it has something like 4 carbs per serving (1/2 cup which is too much) (6-2 fiber). You don't have to use a lot of it. This is how I like mine [with the spagetti squash]
1cup of cooked spagetti squash
4-5 boneless skinless chicken breast (pounded out)
2 cloves of garlic
4 slices of onion chopped
butter
parmasean
salt and pepper

in a pan sautee the chicken in the butter along with the garlic (to brown)

Then move to a casserole first layer the browned chicken then fill the holes [that are in between each individual breast] with spagetti squash, top off with 1/2 can of tomatoe sauce and a lot of parmasean (not the stuff that comes in a can). Cover and bake at 350 for about 45min to 1hr. My family loves this. It taste like chicken caccitore (if you know what that is). Now I'm hungry again :)

What's spaghetti squash?

gecolon
Sat, Dec-15-01, 10:24
It is a squash. It looks like a yellow foot ball. When it is cooked you remove the flesh by passing a fork across the flesh, It peels off and looks like spagetti (really it looks like angel hair pasta).

I like my spaghetti squash with lots of butter, salt & pepper, and grated parmesan-romano cheese. I'm not eating it since LCing, tho. I like it so much I could easily eat the whole thing at once, and that's way too many carbs!

Those of you who eat eggplant, how do you prepare it? I love eggplant, but used to use it in an all-veggie dish that's off-limits now.

Thanks gecolon for your answer. Can this be done with any squash or is a specific one? Isnt it high in carbs?I feel so ignorant but am intrigued.

i slice the eggplant long ways and soak it in salt for 20 mins ( it is part of the deadly nightshade family and contains toxins that the salt draws out)

wash it off and pat dry with a paper towel. Then you can do what ever you like with it.
i use it in place of pasta in lasagna.

it is yummy just fried in butter too.

Hi Harley

The ECC for 1 cup of spagetti squash is 7.843
(I use one cup for my whole recipe)

This is the only squash that breaks apart and resembles angel hair.

You can eat pumkin (which tastes good fried, boiled, and baked) too. There are so many things you can eat with this way of life. It is like a food adventure:)

you can eat pumpkin???

i thought that as it is so sweet it must be out!

that is great cos pumpkin chips are delicious with sourcream, and if you can have roast pumpkin how care cares about missing out on the spuds!! (americans, spuds= potatoes)

Hi gecolon
Never (in my wildest dreams) did I think that I could eat pumpkin on this diet. Which is daft in a way as we can eat almost anything in moderation. Sadly though, I think the pleasures of the spaghetti squash are denied me as Ive never heard of i and only seen regular pumpkin in the shops. Never mind.

I love eggplants (full of oil - yum) but never ate it before cos of the oil and am not too sure about preparing them so thanks sammiejam, Ill give it a go. There is another method of charring the skin off but Ive never tried it. Plus I have an electric cooker.

Well now I have 2 veggie ideas to try: fionas pakoras and fried eggplant. yum.

sammiejam
Sun, Dec-16-01, 15:26
according to fit day 1 cup of pumpkin= 7g carb!!!

1 cup is alot so that is good news

you can char off the skin the same way that you do peppers (put skin side down on direct heat) but you still have to salt it so i do it this way: slice and salt it,let sit for 20 mins etc,
crush and mix rosemary, garlic and olive oil, baste eggpalnt with this and either roast or place direct on grill. I cut it quite thin so it doesnt take long to cook. When it is done the skin will peel off. You can put it in a preseving jar filled with olive oil and a few garlic cloves and it lasts for ages(and makes a nice present) i do the same thing with feta cheese, yum, and the oil is then flavored and can be used to make really yummy in dressings etc.

o yeah if you decide to roast it put in some pumpkin or other veg, drizzle with balsamic vinigar when done for a roast veg salad. this is good with mediterannian lamb.

I buy "Traditional" Ragu sauce - it has 7 or 8 gms of Carbs per serving. Does in a pinch with the spaghetti squash if I'm dying for pasta! Of course, I pour it over browned hamburger.

Early on in this thread - (which I have now read the entire thing!!!! whew!) I was seeing a lot of fruits - how much of those are okay? I thought fruits were pretty much a major no-no :nono: so I've stayed away from them....

Also - how bad are mushrooms? I love all kinds of them - are some worse than others? Portabellas are my favorites.....a couple of big slices of portabellas sauteed in butter - :yum: with a little bit of garlic salt.....nummy!

My grocery list is pretty similar to most I've seen here - though I haven't done a whole lot of the nuts either - again - thought those were pretty bad..... :help:

I mae the fried eggplant. Cut it then salted it then washed the salt off and fried it. Luckily while I was frying the second batch I tasted the first. I hadnt washed them enough and they were so salty I had tears in my eyes.:daze: Washed again what I had left, fried them and they wee ok. I didnt realise just how much oil they need though.
Definately something that needs refining.

Fionas pakoras are sort of vegetable pancakes using soya flour (if Im not too mistaken) I dont remember the exact recipe but I think its in her diary.

Hi Everyone,
I am real new to this concept and page. I read your lists of foods but what I need is the name brand of packaged foods, staples.

I know about the basics, meat, cheese. I am looking for bottled sauces, base for soups, that type of thing....

Also, how many carbs a day are your guys eating? Do you think 30 is okay to start?

One last thing. at night I like a glass of wine. Any suggestions on type of wine? Also when I have a sweet tooth which is every evening after dinner.....any suggestions on what to eat. I have been chewing on a few raisins.

Thanks.

I have always loved to cook and when we started this WOE I thought my fun and my reputation would suffer; I could not have been more wrong. For example, I have discovered that there are many alternatives to the usual boring potatoes, rice, and noodles. Where is it written that hash browns have to contain potatoes; I make them with small white turnips or with daikon and a little onion and they are delicious. And we all know how useful cauliflower is!

In my refrigeratorefrigerator you will always find:

Heavy cream
Light cream (for coffee)
butter, butter, butter (due to a great sale, there are 20 pounds of the stuff in my freezer :o: )
Lots of cheese: cheddar, havarti, parmesan, double and triple cream brie, feta
Cream cheese
Ricotta
sour cream
Sugar free peanut butter
At least three dozen eggs (I buy them at a local farm)
Cauliflower
Cabbage
Brocolli
Turnips
Eggplant for baba ghanouj or to use instead of lasagna
Bacon
Frozen raspberries and blueberries
Frozen spinach - lots
Celery
Lettuce
Fresh fish
Homemade faux maple syrup

In the pantry or on the countertop:

Canned pumpkin for un-pie
Onions
Grape tomatoes (terrific with cream cheese)
Coconut milk
Splenda
Pure sucralose (my new favorite sweetener)
Unsweetened baking chocolate
Unsweetened cocoa
Unsweetened coconut
Davinci sugar free syrups - at least half a dozen flavors
Gallons of seltzer for Italian sodas
Diet soda, but just one or two kinds because we like the Italian sodas better
Pork rinds
Nuts (well, most of them are in the freezer)
Tuna
Two thickeners called not/Starch and not/Sugar which have no carbs are work really well

In the freezer:
Almond flour and Oat flour, neither of which I had ever bought before this WOL
Beef
Pork
Chicken
La Tortilla low-carb tortillas
Kielbasa
Sausage - my butcher makes his with no sugar or additives

Well, there's probably more, but it's 90 degrees in the shade today and I can't think of anything else. :daze:

Hi Wanda: plantains are LOADED with carbs - they may not be sweet and ripe, but the starchiness is all carb, like potatoes. Not a good thing for a low carb diet. :(

Anyway, my refrigerator staples:

- eggs
- CHEESE! :D Right now, I've got: cheddar, swiss, processed slices, cottage cheese, cream cheese and parmesan.
- one or two Yves or SmartMenu soy products; or tofu
- cream

- tomatoes

- diet pop
- beer :D I'm low carb, not NO carb!

Freezer staples:
- frozen veggies like broccoli or cauliflower
- chopped frozen green peppers and onions for cooking
- ready-to-bake fish

Cupboard staples:
- canned tuna
- spices
- So Soya (meat substitute; dry)
- sugar free jello

great idea for a post!
I have as probably many others have struggled with the no sugar or starch in the ingred. rule and it seems you just can't get away from it. it would be really cool if everyone could post their fav. brands of products they succesfully use maybe it would help newbies and shoot even give all of us some new things to try.
heres some things I have been using!

trader joes mayo (zero carb zero sugar in the ingred)
the only brand I found with no sugar

maries brand dressings (have only tried the blue cheese
(zero carbs per 2 tbsp and no sugar at all in the ingred.)

also annies naturals have dressings with no sugar (cesar dressing) 1 carb per 2 tbsp

carbolite ice cream
4 carbs per 1/2 cup and doesn't throw me out of keto

hansens diet soda...brand new
made with splenda and totally sodium free,
caffeine free, and yummy ( zero carb)

anyone successful still drinking diet pepsi...I miss it
also i have the best pimento's n cheese recipe without the fillers
I formed this into a ball and rolled in crushed walnuts for a party it was a hit!

1/2 lb shredded chedder
1 4oz jar pimentos drained
1/4 c pimento stuffed green olives minced
4 green onion minced
1tsp garlic pwder
1tsp paprika pwder
3oz cream cheese room temp
1/3 cup mayo

mix chedder pimentos olives grn onion garlic and paprika in bowl

mix mayo and cream cheese.
add to cheese mix, mix well
you can eat as is on sandwiches or meat but
i like it the cheese ball way
just let it sit in the fridge for a couple hors before forming into a ball! 20 carbs for the whole thing without the count of crushed walnuts for cheese ball...so about 1.1 grms per 2 tbsp

I see virtually no one's list contains bread of any kind unless it is said to be for the family. My list is very similar to everyone else's with this one exception. (OK make that two, because I get Triscuits too)

As a successful follower of the Sugar Busters diet, I have been eating moderate amounts of stone ground, whole wheat bread, which is considered OK on this plan as are Triscuits and similar whole wheat, no sugar added crackers.

Please forgive my ignorance, but is ALL bread taboo on most of the low carb diets? I check the bread to make sure there is no added sugar, and the whole wheat bread (and Triscuits) are relatively low in carbs AFAICT.

I think I'd be in real trouble if I couldn't eat a sandwich now and then. (or have greasy hands from holding lunchmeat!) :)

Curious,
Chris

Thats what I thought. I guess it's good that there are so many plans out there, so people can find one that "fits".

I really hate the "going on a diet" thing. I've seen too many people fall into that trap and end up worse off than when they started, because they invariably "go off the diet".

That's one of the main reasons SugarBuster's was a "fit" for me, because it's a reasonable plan that I won't feel compelled to cheat on and I can make it my life's diet.

I like learning about the other plans, and can perhaps incorporate some of the things in them into my life diet. At present though, I can't rationalize the unmoderated consumption of things like heavy cream and fatty meats. Although I believe the FDA's Food Pyramid is upside down, as all of the low carb diets imply, I still think there has to be some small wisdom in moderated fat intake. (especially saturated)

I'm down 15 lbs. since the last 2 months, and I intend to stick with it for good this time. I hated myself after the holidays last year.

195250 If you are reading this. I think the Atkins bars and other LC bars can be a great meal replacement. I'd try to only do breakfast or lunch and not both though. I take one for lunch quite often because they help me avoid the snack machines and eating out with my office mates. (I think Subway is just about the only place I can go without breaking a bunch of rules!) They give you a vitamin boost and some good quality protien and lessen the negative impacts of skipping meals.

Word of warning though! Read the labels on the LC bars! It's easy to confuse them with the "Energy Bars" and those are usually huge carbo loads!!!

Chris

Elihnig
Tue, Apr-30-02, 08:57
I have to say that I totally disagree. Those bars are not okay for meal replacements. Many can contain up to 20 "hidden" carbs, a whole day's allotment for people on induction. Also, eating fake food will not teach you anything about changing your eating habits, a must for having a successful way of life.

Plan ahead, pack your lunch, and eat healthy, natural foods, available everywhere!

Thanks for the input.

You are right, of course, people should not come to rely on these products exclusively, and should consider all the alternatives for eating away from the house. Some work environments make it difficult to pack lunch, or to even take the time to eat a nutritious lunch (made from "real" food) :) So for me, it tends to be better than skipping meals, which I have found to be a very bad thing.

Could you please explain "hidden carbs" and "induction"?
(I would be shocked if these Atkins bars had hidden carbs! I thought they had one of the stricter plans.)

Thanks in advance!

hidden carbs is one very disappointing aspect about the atkins bars (as well as their other goods)

you would think they would be honest with us about actual carb content and not try to get by on a technicality

kind of like this heart attack vs cardiac arrest

i believe in atkins and it has helped me greatly but the hidden carb thing irks me if you can't tell :)

not2fat
Tue, Apr-30-02, 14:07
So, now that I've heard (a few times) that Atkin's products contain hidden carbs...I have to ask: how do you know? How did you figure it out?

I'm not saying that you guys are wrong at all...I really hope you CAN explain it to me, so that I can be more aware. But, I have to wonder, why in the world would he, of all people, sell products that would keep HIS diet from working properly? I can see that making a quick buck off of desperate, overweight people that want an easy meal solution would be the first reason you give me, but overall, wouldn't he be hurting his entire practice and philosophy if no one ended up losing weight due to eating his products? It doesn't seem like he would think it would even be worth it because he could make MORE money by having more followers (when people actually lose weight and see results) if he maintains the integrity of his diet and reputation. Again, I can understand why a company such as CarbSolutions would market hidden-carb products..because they are just selling food products and making money off of that alone, hoping to get all those low-carbers out there to buy. But Dr. Atkins, on the other hand, has invested so much time/energy/money/reputation into this way of life, that I don't see why HE would jeopardize all of that by lying to us...he has a lot more to lose than CarbSolutions, etc.

Maybe there is some calculation that you guys are doing with the food nutritional labels that I don't know about, which is telling you that the carbs can't be low??

Also, BostonLou, if you really do think he had a good old-fashioned heart attack due to clogged arteries, don't you feel the need to quit the diet? I don't know if he is telling the truth or not, but I just wondered about your reasoning... All I know is that I feel so much better when I follow his diet, so that has to tell me something about the healthiness of it...

digitalq
Tue, Apr-30-02, 14:51
I have read that some carbohydrates have a higher glycemic index than others. This is the reason Sugar Busters stay away from the seemingly healthy carrot. So I would imagine that simply reading the Carb count on any product is not really a good indication of how much effect it will have on blood sugar levels.

Reading the ingredient label helps too, and is the main reason it takes me a bit longer to shop "in the middle" of the store. :)

I think perhaps it should be suggested that a glycemic index rating be put on the FDA label, but maybe that's asking a lot. I don't know how hard it is for them to come up with that number or if a comparison between foods would be "apples to apples" (pardon the pun)

For instance, according to SB, fruit can be consumed as long as it's 1hr. before or 1/2hr. after any meal. According to them, fructose (on an empty stomach) dosen't cause a large rise in blood sugar. (insulin trigger)

The reason you never see Sugar Free on IceCream? Because Lactose is a sugar. (I'm guessing with all the heavy cream consumers here that it too, does not trigger insulin production) :)

So I guess the moral of the story is to read the label. But I still want to know more about the Hidden Carbs.

Yes, the Atkins "attack" made me think for a second, but I realize that problems with the heart are not always connected with the health of the person. They are quite often hereditary or simply defects in this most important muscle. No way I can pass judgement on that incident.

Hi,
I'm with you on that one. I wonder if there really are hidden carbs in the bars. If so, I need to know how to figure this out, as I have been eating up to two a day. I don't use them as meal replacement, but with coffee as a dessert of sorts. I need to know if I should cut them out, or at least cut way back. I also would have to wonder why Dr. Atkins would market something falsely, I just can't imagine that!!

How to find hidden carbs: use the hidden carb counter on this site, under low carb tools and plug in the information from the label of the food you want to consume. Another way to find them, but not as accuratly, is to estimate 4 calories for each gram of protein and carbohydrate, and 9 (I think) grams for every fat gram. So if the label says something is 200 calories and it has 10 grams of fat the remaining calories are 110. If it has 18 grams of protein, that becomes 72 calories. The remaining calories, if not fat or protein are 38, which works out to be 9.5 grams of carbs. Note: these are just rough estimates but you can see how it works. BTW: I just made up these numbers, I don't know if there is a real product out there with these numbers.

As for why Atkins markets things, I have a theory. Atkins probably isn't in control of the whole company anymore. He probably is only involved in part of it, and gives the marketing and new product lines to a different section leader, so to speak. According to some scientists, gylcerine and sugar alcohols are not used by the body in the same way that other carbohydrate are. In other words, they do not, or should not create an insulin spike. However, everyone is unique and individual. For many people with insulin sensitivity, anything resembling a carb (and those are carbs, no doubt about it) will cause the insulin to rise, and the body to react chemically as if real sugar had been eaten. This knocks some people out of ketosis, causing cravings in other people, and has no effect on some people.

Some people here, that claim that bars don't effect them, I've noticed don't eat a whole bar at a time, they divide it up and have less than a third of a bar at a time.

I had a few bars a week and noticed I didn't lose anything those weeks when I had consumed bars. Too many people say, "I'm doing everything right and I'm not losing weight." We ask questions and find out they are eating those bars. Sometimes as a meal replacement, and sometimes as a snack. Experience has taught me and others that something that sounds that good, is too good to be true. Soon the label laws will change and the gylcerine and sugar alcohols used will be on the label for all to see.

Atkins probably sees it as the lesser of two evils. He's using the money from the bars and foods to fund what he's been asking for for a long time, a legitimate research project to prove the benefits of low carbing. (This is a guess, but I know he wants to.)

Hope this helps.

Just for the heck of it, I read the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 (NLEA) which is nicely summarized here (http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/foodlabel/newlabel.html). <- click on the word "here"

The way I read it, if they are claiming that these bars are low carbohydrate, then they are required by the Act to list "Other" carbohydrates, just as I've noticed the claimed "Sugar Free" foods always list the Sugar Alcohols if they are used.

Anyway, since we were talking about what's in the fridge and most things get there through a trip to the store with all of the semi-informative and somewhat misguided (nutrition information is supposed to be listed in order of priority for health concerns, yet we see where carbs end up!) labels. I thought this info and link might be at least somewhat relative to the topic at hand. :)

Perhaps, when we are armed with this knowledge of the law, some of these food manufaturers can be pressured into "coming clean" about the nutritional value of thier products. I know they just love the archaic FDA guidlines that place so much emphasis on fat content and tend to gloss over carbs and sugars. (bottom of the list!) They can pump thier food full of good tasting and addictive sugar and tell us it's good for us because it's "Fat Free" or "Low Fat". grrrr...

I wasn't saying that I thought the Doctor did have a heart attack but rather what I meant was that everyone is out for protecting their a$$ and even if it was a heart attack they would spin it so that it wasn't diet related

and it's going to be another thing to defend with all these people who slam the diet anyway. they're going to hear what they want and explaining the difference in cardiac arrest vs a heart attack to them will be an impossible task

am i talking in circles?? maybe I shouldn't of had that atkins chocolate for breakfast :)

BostonLou! You are okay! Don't worry about what others say about the diet. Most of the people who will be the naysayers would never try it, anyway. They just want to talk bad about it because they don't happen to agree with it. That's the way some people are. That's why there are so many points of view in politics. Everybody looks at things differently...even us. That's why I'm on Neanderthin, and most of us are on Atkins, and some of us are on the various other LC programs. Even WE don't agree with everything that the other people are doing. What really counts is what you feel like INSIDE on this program and how committed you are to your own health.

Always in my fridge:
Bacon
Eggs
Feta Cheese (for salads and I'm addicted)
Chicken: boneless breasts in large quantities when on sale, legs & thighs in large quantities when on sale
Pork: I buy boneless things and cut them into chop sizes & freeze when on sale
Beef: usually one piece of cheap beef to make potroast once in great while.
Ground turkey: I buy the cheapest kind (not the turkey breast ground). I've been using ground turkey for so long I can't stop. Use it for taco salads, burgers, LC pizza.
Heavy cream
Cream cheese
Shredded cheese
Protein drink fixings: extracts, powder
Ricotta (not always, just about once a month)
Ice cubes: I like my water very cold and use a lot of ice
Parmesan: as a flavor item, not so much as cheese
Sour cream
Tuna
Fresh baby spinach
Red leaf lettuce, sometimes other kinds for blended salads
Mayonaise
Capers
Sugar free jello
Spices and herbs (buy in bulk in my own containers)
Tabasco sauce
Louisiana hot sauce (much cheaper than tabasco and a bit mellower)
Onions, yellow and scallions
Pepperoni slices (not always because it never lasts)
Mustard
Vinegars: organic brown rice vinegar is my fav
Soy sauce
Limes and/or lemons
Nu Salt
Peppercorns in grinder
Fish: I'd eat it daily but it is kinda spendy. A few times a month
Peanut butter to make peanut butter cups
Chocolate powder to make peanut butter cups and occasional brownie (which is what I use the ricotta for)

I tend to buy protein in large quantities when on sale and my freezer is always packed to the limit. Lots of this stuff I don't have to buy often (vinegar, soy sauce -- once Kroger had inhouse sugar free jello 3 for $1 so I bought enough to last a year. Tastes the same as SF Jelly and SF Jello tends to run 89 cents each.

At first, I was running out shopping all the time. But now I have developed new shopping habits. I make quick runs for fresh produce, eggs and cheese but tend to go for weeks w/o buying other stuff.

Everything I listed is in my kitchen as I write. I love LCing.

As I look at these lists I am more and more convinced that LCing is very healthy. We eat mostly natural, unproccessed foods, and loads of veggies. How can the low fat brigade criticise shopping lists that feature broccoli, cauliflour, berries, natural yogurt and unproccessed protein. Well Done People! LCing rules.

Hi all, I'm new here and enjoying the lists, but I have to tell you, I laughed a lot when I read A Thin Me's post. The question was, "What foods are always in your fridge?" And part of the answer was, "cat stuff, toliet paper......". There must have been a part of Atkins that I missed! LOL. Diane

SF jello, salami and turkey breast, cottage cheese.
These are all my "inbetween" foods.

having read the shopping lists I'm discouraged... I'm into my 7th week of Atkins and I'm eating what everyone else seems to be eating eating. During the 7 weeks I went to 3 social functions and had white wine. I have only lost 3 lbs. and I exercise for 30-45mins. 4days/week. Does anyone have an answer? Several friends have said that because I have type "A" blood, Atkins will not work. I'm honest when I say that only 3 times (white wine) have I deviated from the plan. Any answers?

Sun, Sep-22-02, 17:17
Are you drinking lots of water? How about diet sodas? Try drinking nothing but water for a week and see how it goes. Also, you might want to switch to Morton "lite" salt which has half the sodium as regular. Really keep an eye on foods that have added salt as it can keep the water weight on. Don't get discouraged. Think of what you could have gained in that seven weeks and add it to what you've lost. Keep at it. Diane

I've never heard the blood type thing. What is that all about?? I am A+ and have had great success. What does blood type have to do with weight loss?? I'm confused.

jlee949
Mon, Sep-23-02, 07:06
Thanks for your thoughts- I drink water and Crystal Lite. No soft drinks. I'll try pure H2O if Crystal Lite is bad. Re: the blood type, there is a book out called, "Eat right for your blood type" by Dr. Peter D'Adamo. He states that Atkins works well for type "O", but type "A" should be vegetarian. I glanced through the book. but found it to be far too restrictive for my tastes.

DianeNoSgr
Mon, Sep-23-02, 07:43
I just checked the label on Crystal Light. It contains maltodextrin. (Maltodextrins are easily digestible carbohydrates made from natural corn starch.) There are 5 calories per serving. Those 5 cals aren't coming from fat or protein in the maltodextrin, so that leaves carbs. 1 carb = 4 calories, so you're ingesting 1.25 carbs with each 8 oz glass. That could be throwing your Atkins plan off. I'm just guessing as I'm doing Sugar Busters. I quit diet drinks last July but in the last three days I've had two diet colas. I'm up 3.5 pounds plus I had a killer headache yesterday. Back to just drinking water for me. I need to be retaught every once in a while and the weight gain and headaches get my attention. By the way, if you want to read a WOE that's really restrictive, try "Neander Thin". It's so restrictive it's laughable. Diane

Just did a little research on the Atkins web site. Here's the quote, "We discourage the use of aspartame (marketed as NutraSweetŪ and EqualŪ) because of clinical observations that it slows weight loss in certain individuals." The sweetner in Crystal Light is Aspartame.

As to the bacon...I live in Utah (where Spam is considered a gourmet item), but our local Sams Club (like Cosco) sells pre-cooked bacon in three-pound packages for about $6.00. It is wonderful. You put it in the microwave for about 15 seconds a slice - crisp, doesn't stink up the kitchen and the kids can do it themselves for breakfast. I love it wrapped in a piece of turkey with a little mayo and lettuce.

Hi YaYa. Thanks for the Costco tip. I'm there several times a week -- in Utah, no less! I'll look for the bacon. I always hate cooking the stuff because it's such a mess. I found the precooked sausage there several months ago. Nice to be able to pop one in the MW and not have to cook a pound of the stuff. Thanks again. Diane

Hi JLee,

Decaf is fine, (in fact, its preferred over regular by Atkins),
Crystal Light has aspertame, which may contribute to stalls in some people. However, having said that, I have to say I'm drinking regular coffee and Crystal Light with no problems so far.

Hi John,

Are you recording at Fitday? It's a great way to keep track of what you're eating, particularly if you're getting enough
calories. You should be eating 10 x your current weight. There are several threads in "Hot Links" that will explain why, plus several on stalls and plateaus. Hang in there. This does work.

The terrible headache is the caffeine withdrawal. Try cutting down to half a drink a day for a week and then every other day. It's a killer to go cold-turkey off the blasted stuff.

As far as diet anything goes -- I don't want to put the chemicals into my body. I believe that artificial sweeteners make me hungry, plus they also give me headaches since I've been off them a couple of months. Tried a diet Pepsi this week and it about killed me. Not going to have to learn that lesson again. I'm really trying to stick to foods in their natural state. I feel better and it certainly is less expensive. Diane

I am making my shopping list for late next week so I thought I'd toss it on this thread with comments. My choices are limited by what my local super walmart carries. So some is what I choose and some is just based on what they have, or what they have in a brand that isn't sugary.

Beef Roasts*
Pork Roasts
Chicken**
Bacon ***
Sausage
Salami
Pepperoni ***
Canned Tuna
Canned Chicken***

* I split a 1/2 side of beef from a butcher shop with my parents. It is ultra-lean, and it is double wrapped for good storage, and has a variety of meats, from some filet mignon to T-bones and Sirloins, round steaks and roasts, to hamburger (lots of that). Cost me vastly less than buying all this stuff individually fresh at the market. Now and then if I've used up most of my meat though, I'll buy a roast. I recommend looking into a bulk-purchase -- even in cities you can do this, just find a butcher shop. If you live in a rural area, it's easier. Go into any farm-related store and ask the first person you see... they'll probably know. :-)

** pref boneless/skinless breast. Sometimes thighs. Sometimes frozen breasts. Someday when I grow up I'll actually buy an entire chicken or turkey and do something with it. At this point, throwing something in a crockpot seems like work.

*** ok, enough nitrates to kill you slowly, but it tastes awesome, and the Pepp makes a great 'crust' to Donald's Deep Dish Pizza Quiche http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44087 Is also a good snack, or cooked till really crispy, is also yummy to drop in a salad or cold-salad for tangy crunch. For using many meats (choose a combo), try some in Chris's snack: http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=61500

*** for desperate moments when I haven't anything to eat and limited time, canned white meat chicken (it's in the aisle with the tuna) can be dropped into a saute pan (er... minus the can :-)) with almost any spices or sauce. Really good w/curry.

Cheddar *
Swiss
Mozzarella
Parmesan (real cheese) **
Blue (crumbled) ***

For a cool way to use a couple variety of cheeses, try Harley's idea (I couldn't figure out how to paste a link to their message in here, instead of to the whole thread and it's quite a ways down in the thread, so here's the quote instead:

<blockquote><i>Alternate layers of chicken/turkey/whatever slices/pastrami type meat and cheese. Fry them then cut into small squares. Majorly yummy, not naughty, and filling. Also good for entertaining as they look nice with the different coloured layers. Put them on toothpicks, can add olives etc. I also have this as a meal (not cut into squares though) with a fried egg on top or between the layers. Sometimes a dab of cream cheese too.</i></blockquote>

* I was surprised to find the USDA shows cheddar as being lower-carb than colby. I used to consider them interchangeable.

** Real parmesan is awesome and it lasts quite awhile if grated finely. They now have graters that are much better than the old towers we used to use, based on woodshaving tools, quick and easy to clean and can shred parmesan (or any cheese, but parm's hard so you can use an even finer grater) delightfully. "Microplane" is my favorite grater, amazon.com has it but other sources do too. Try Shark's Bacon Fajita Salad with Edible Parmesan Bowl -- the green can crap can't compare! http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54354

*** Karen posted the recipe for blue cheese dressing http://www.lowcarb.ca/karen/recipe015.html - WAY yummy. Thin it out with water and it mixes wonderfully into a super-big salad without having to use massive amounts. Much better than anything from a bottle IMO, it only takes a few minutes to make, and I'm guessing would store for at least several days in the fridge (maybe longer if you added in the SC or vinegar just before eating).

Whole Cream *
Half & Half
Cream Cheese **

* I only use this in recipes that call for it, which require the whipping-thicker nature of it. I don't drink coffee or tea now, as I figured a small fortune in supplements was kinda wasted drinking diuretics that would help me pee them out! Gee that wasn't a very ladylike way to put it, sorry...

** Of course, this can be used in 1001 awesome foods. But if you're not on induction or supersensitive to sweet, try Natrushka's to-die-for "Mock Danish" (add some s-f rasberry jam in the middle... oh. my. God!) http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=560435#post560435 that thread also has a TON of awesome variants, too, from chocolate to cinnamon to pecan to....

My store's plain yogurt has so many carbs, I can't figure out how people rave about plain yogurt. Same for the cottage cheese (and the dry-curd I once heart someone recommend has twice as many!). So I don't buy those. Maybe it's just the brands my store carries. I live in a 15K pop SuperWal-Mart city... they OWN this town. Not many other options, as refrigerated dairy stuff doesn't ship well for online buying.

Red Leaf Lettuce
Romaine Lettuce
Spinach Leaves
Cabbage *
Cauliflower **
Broccoli
Bell Pepper
Jalapeno Peppers ***

I'm not a veggie fan really. Salads with multiple types of leaves taste much better to me.

Cabbage and cauliflower appear to be some of the lowest carb versatile-for-experiment veggies when you're feeling brave, and they seem to 'take on' the flavor of whatever you cook them with.

* a leaf of cabbage can go in my salad, small amounts elsewhere It's not my favorite food, but my bunny likes it a lot. :-)

** Try the chinese chicken fried 'rice' recipe in the kitchen section 'Cauli-Fried' Rice Karen's original: http://www.lowcarb.ca/karen/recipe052.html I hate cauliflower but I LOVE it in this. It will inspire you to the many other ways it could probably be used as well.

*** Try Paul's stuffed, wrapped & roasted japanenos (here's a pic, too!) -- http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49553

Ginger Root
Garlic Bulbs
Sour Cream

If I'm out...

Helleman's Mayonnaise
Natural/lowest-carb Peanut Butter
Sugar-free or low-carb jam/jelly (rasberry)
Splenda in packages (not bulk)

I was searching desperately on the web for some low-carb-ish things my store didn't have, or didn't have in large bottles, and did find that netrition.com had some stuff (just one source of many I'm sure) like the davinci syrups for example.

I already have most the spices I need, but when I began LC I had to buy one or two spices every time I shopped.

Lets see

As far as bacon goes

I go to the institution size huge canned food Isle, and they
have precooked crumbled bacon, in a large can. I think its expensive, but
your not buying all the greese that you cook out of the uncooked
and it lasts a long time in the fridge. Handy for salads or whatever you want.

For some reason I crave soy, so I buy Trader joe's oragnic soy milk when I can. Only 8 per cup, so no worse than cream.
You really have to watch soy milk, there are lots of soy drinks,
and beverages out that that can go clear up to 27 a cup.

I also buy tofu, and julieane it in very fine threads, and use that for pasta. At kroger its like 3.00 a pack, at trader joes its only1.19
so I stock up if I can get there.

I bought the keto crisp cereal and all it basicly amounts to is
puffed tvp.
I just buy the tvp and pour cream on it, and a pack of splenda.
Really gets me though a cruchy sweet craving. :p
You can also soak it in a little water, warm it, and eat it warm.
The other thing that gets me though a craving is sf jello, blended with cream cheese. Sets up and a couple of spoons full tastes very nice when you want a goody.

I keep chicken thighs in the fridge, I usually barbicue them with a little splenda and a tomato mustard sauce.
Lots of mushrooms ;)

I rarely eat fruit, but have added regular yougurt and a few berries to my plan, will see if its ok.

I have lots 26 pounds in 2 months so its working like gangbusters for me.

The only thing I have eliminated is EQUAL,
and I only eat a Atkins bar, a couple of times a month now.
They will stall me, if I eat to many. That peanut butter one is
awlful good though. ;)

My reward meal, If I loose well the previous month, is some
pizza on the first, and a lc choclate bar. Thats one evening out
a month, and I just LOVE real pizza with crust.
I usualy make the crustless kind which even my husband will eat.

Good posts PJ and Sandy- I enjoyed them a lot. As a single guy I don't prepare any elaborate recepies or devise any solutions for repetitive meals. Meat, fish, chicken, salads, cheese, salami, heavy cream, decaf, crystal lite, and water are my mainstays. What I don't do is count carbs or calories or use ketosticks. Where am I going wrong?

PJ in Miam
Sat, Sep-28-02, 08:21
Apparently you're not going wrong if it's working for you! :-)

What I learned from "not planning" and just "eating good foods" was that I wildly overate carbs (from my goal of sticking to 30 ecc or less, as recommended for engendering ketosis). For many people this might not be a big issue, but for me it apparently is, but that might vary depending on the person, genetics etc.

For some people, merely eating enough protein and eating well can take their weight down. But I'm heavily insulin-resistant, so being forced to plan a limited carb-set per-meal is good for me. I get swings of mood, cravings, etc. if I go overboard (like have 28 carbs in one meal, then none in two).

Once I get re-acquainted with everything it won't take so much conscious planning as I have now. I just need to get the general values of different kinds of food in my head, so I can make an educated guess about what I eat. Right now I'm having to look up every ingredient's values, and planning recipes and daily menus, but that will pass. :-)

:D This site has been God sent for me! Thanks soooo much to all of you! I am having to switch over to Protein Power LP due to some bad health findings and I have been gathering information! Wow! I now have lists that I can shop from without worrying. This is so difficult for a person who has tried every diet in the books plus making up a few diets of my own. They all worked, for a while, but then you could have guessed that, couldn't you?
Now I have so many things to 'un-learn'
I am praying that I can understand PPLP well enough so that I'm not 'thrown off' in food choices that I have to make. Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, fuzzy thinking and Chronic Pain Syndrome all 'get in the way' of 'good' planning. THIS THREAD IS AN ANSWER TO A PRAYER! Now "I gotta go shopping!"

Hi jlee949,

I use saccharine tablets to sweeten tea, coffee etc and have no problems. I think saccharine is the activ sweetner in sweet'n'low. However it may also contain maltodextrose or some other bulking agent which is a carbohydrate. It's very light however so I think you may be being a bit strict with yourself allowing a gram for each little sachet.

The info seems conflicted on this topic. I know that a strict omission would be optimal, but then I have to drink my decaf black. Dr. Atkins allows it, but the caveat is "stalls". Sometimes it seems like you just can't win! :-))

I drink my decaf with heavy cream, no sugar. I get a Vanilla Creme decaf at Trader Joe's that has no added sweeteners, and with TJ's heavy cream it's so rich it's become a dessert substitute for me, even without any sugar.

The only thing I haven't seen though is my very favourite snack which used to be a guilty pleasure before I started LCing, now it's just a pleasure.

In my kitchen:

center cut boneless pork chops
ground beef (the most un-lean possible, it's cheaper, and the fat cooks off anyway, and doesn't weigh anything, and even if it didn't cook off who cares, and it tastes better)
swordfish steaks
salmon steaks

[I]side question: I LOVE bacon, but hate cooking it. The whole apartment smells like bacon for days. Has anyone found a magic air freshner which eliminates bacon odors?[I]

I buy precooked bacon at Sams Club. It is a huge package and you just take a few pieces out and zap them in the microwave for about 10 seconds.... Yummy. The only bad side to this is it is way to easy for the kids to deplete my bacon supply when it is so easy to make.

My grocery list always includes lettuce, eggs, cream cheese, shredded cheese, mayo, Talking Rain (sparkling water), and TUNA!!!! I buy other items when they're on sale...and switch back and forth between veggies and meats. We have enough butter and olive oil to last awhile, but when they run out....they get added to my list as well. Same thing with coffee and stevia.

Two teachers, here at the school where I teach have been on the South Beach Diet for about four weeks, now. Both have stopped losing weight, but they are still losing inches...I think their bodies are just trying to adjust. Do we consider this diet, or WOE Low Carb? I guess it is...I read the book and it's pretty interesting. He has done more research since Atkins came out with his Diet Revolution. Personally, I don't want to try it, because I've been very successful on Neanderthin for two and a half years, now. But, whatever turns your crank. I get a kick out of the stuff they are bringing for lunch and to listening to them talk, ad nosium, about their diet. I now know what a bore I was when I first started my new WOE.

When my fridge is stocked up I have these...I always buy cheese and cream, eggs and butter..they are pretty much staples in my cooking.

Eggs, mayo, butter, cheddar cheese, American cheese slices, Mozzarella, parmesan, cream cheese, sour cream, heavy cream, half&Half, Blue cheese salad dressing, all kinds of meat (beef, chicken, pork, I use alot of ground beef & chicken breasts),pepperoni, Frozen spinach, frozen cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini, cucumbers, lettuce, cabbage, celery, mushrooms, turnips, white onions, green onions, lemons, LC yogurt, LC coffee cream, Water, Diet pepsi, Kool-aid sweetened w/stevia, kikoman soy sauce, mustard, minced garlic or fresh, Worcestershire Sauce, Hot Sauce, Jalapeņos, Green Olives, SF pancake syrup, have apple sauce sweetened with splenda but, don't eat it.lol Oh and Almonds...and Soy flour(I keep in the fridge):D Sometimes Tomatos. Avocado if they are ripe.
Had to take a couple of trips to the fridge to get the entire list!

The rest of the higher carb stuff my kids and DH eat/drink, milk, juice, sodas, bread, jam, hotdogs(if cured with sugar gives me cravings), ketchup, fruits...etc.

Talk about $$$ grocery bill!!!

 I NEVER realized how restrictive Neanderthin is compared to this! Out of what you have listed above, I can have eggs, meat, veggies, water, mustard, jalepenos and olives, nuts and avocados...Although, I DON'T COUNT anything on my list of stuff I can eat...that's a big plus to me after years of WW and "trying" Atkins four times and not making it because it was just too much work trying to figure all of the stuff about carbs. I guess I got really sick of making counting so much a part of my life with WW. Not many people seem to think the way I do about Neanderthin, but I feel fantastic, have lost a ton of weight and am keeping it off for going on two and a half years..to everyone his/her own, I guess. I have to admit, I wouldn't mind a creamed, cheesed-up asparagus from time to time, or something like that but being as how I'm terribly allergic to milk products, it's just as well. :(

I have seen no one add bratwurst ( sorry if I spelled that wrong ).

I always have to buy the Cheddar bratwurst.. Theyre so good! And only two carbs per.
Italian sausage
Pork Sausage - ground or in patties ( has less carbs )
Cheese - Mozz., cheddar, american, the shredded mixed bags of cheese, and parmasan ( again, sorry for the spelling )

Salad stuff -
mixed bag of just greens... normally romaine, greenleaf and Iceburg
Bacon bits
chicken strips ( lemon pepper and grilled )
Carb-well Italian and Ranch dressings

* Ranch goes on practicly everything... Good thing they made some without carbs!

String cheese
eggs ( as almost everyone said )
Slim Jims ( theyre a bit greasy but SOOO good! )
Pepperoni ( good for snacking or even in salads! )
SLICED turkey ( as in lunch meat... I dont particularly like it other ways )\
Chicken pieces
Diet drinks ( Diet coke with Lime, Lemon, or Vanilla, Diet Brisk Iced Tea, Diet 7up or Sprite [the new kind is Sprite Zero, but its the same thing], and Crystal Lite ( it has no carbs, and theres a kind that tastes almost like orange juice! )
SF Jello ( The variety kinds, or the kind u can make at home, and make sparkling jello :D )
Mushrooms
Broccoli
pre-made meatballs
Pork chops
Palomia steaks ( Theyre really thin steaks.. )

Seasonings -
Mrs. Dash ( the table blend, any of the other kind is gross to me )
Accent ( better for you than salt, and still has no carbs (: )
Garlic powder ( for the sauteed mushrooms :D )

Low carb yogurt... Theres some now with only three carbs per cup, and theres vanilla, blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry :) At least they stick to the kind with the least carbs! Theyre really good when you want a cold treat.

I think thats about it... Im not big on veggies, and I dont particularly like to try anything new, so I stick with the stuff I KNOW I'll like :)

ok this is my very first post but I loved reading this thread so much I thought it was as good a place as any to start.

In the fridge/pantry:

chuck roast
ground beef
lamb patties
chicken
tilapia
spinach
romaine
celery
green olives
white cheddar
fontina cheese
parmesean cheese
bleu cheese
feta cheese

sugar free jello

Roasted Rotisserre Turkey

There's probably some more that I can't recall, but this is the usual when I go grocery shopping. I've noticed it's more expensive now than before I was doing LC, b/c I'm eating alot more meat- however, I'm barely eating 'out' at all, so it probably evens out

I know this thread is old but I enjoyed reading all the stuff that was in peoples fridges... gives some new ideas!i've noticed no one has corn on their grocery list. Is this type of vegetable not allowed? I don't know if you're still around lil2thick, but no, corn is usually not allowed on Atkin's or any LC plan. You shouldn't eat it anyway, it can stay in your system for months! :D

Sullengirl... I love Johnsonville bratwurst... it's awesome... also the garlic one is great!

Well, here is my list on a normal day...

Frozen, boneless, skinless breast strips (really easy to just pull a few out)
Chicken thighs
Ground beef
Steaks
Pork chops
usually one at a time pork roast, beef roast, a whole turkey or whole chickens for the rotisserie
Bacon
Fresh sausage, or smoked
Ham slices
Big box of burgers and hotdogs
Many diff kinds of cheeses
Eggs, of course
Buttermilk
Garlic Pickles
Hot peppers
Lettuce
Cabbage
Cherry tomatoes
Yogurt
Green beans
Asparagus
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Spinach
Ranch dressing (always a must)
Mayo
Tons of butter
And on top of the fridge is my sunflower seeds, cajun nut mix and slimjims (I think my only processed garbage)
I do have carb-something-or-other cookies and ice cream, but I haven't had any of these and I don't know if I want to!

Maybe we could get this thread goin again!? :D

Great set of lists, looks like I'm pretty much doing the right thing as there isn't much listed that I either don't have or never considered.

A few things though - a couple of folks mentioned Newman's Ranch dressing - My GF picked up a bottle of his Creamy Italian and I found it had relatively high carbs, and 'illegal' sweeteners - we haven't given the bottle away yet. It has 2g carbs / 2TBS serving, and lists sugar as a "2% or less" ingredient. Maybe the ranch is better.

IMHO the 0 carb dressings that I've tried so far have left us pretty underwhelmed. The ranch is tolerable, but the rest fall in the 'bland and tasteless' category, especially the so-called 'Blue Cheese' varieties :puke: I've decided that after I've used up the stuff we have on hand I'm going to start making my own - it might be higher carb, but I want something with TASTE!

Possibly one of our biggest concerns is bacon / ham / sausages / deli meats - we have checked every major supermarket chain in our area (DeMoula's MarketBasket; Stop & Shop; Wild Harvest (organic chain); Roche Bros; Hannafords, etc) and several small ones and found that nearly ALL the available meats have sugar or other sweeteners listed in the ingredients. The only exceptions were some of the Hebrew National brand kosher meats, and I just found today that Hannafords house brand Lo sodium bacon doesn't have sweeteners and neither do their 'extra hot' Italian Sausages (the rest do) - Even the organic grocery's meats were sweetened, just w/ 'raw sugar' instead of '*ose'

Now Atkins says "NO sugars" so we haven't been purchasing these items (and we miss them, as they 'should' be legal and we liked them back in the pre-LC days. So now I see them on lots of lists - are people ignoring the sugars (I will say that the sweet stuff is usually way down next to the preservatives on the ingredient list, and the labels still claim 0 or 1 carb) as a non-problem? Or are you getting sugar free versions - if so WHERE???

Lastly, there was some discussion about ways to cook eggplant... I make 'mini-pizzaoids out of it.

Peel eggplant, slice crosswise into rounds approx 1/4 - 3/8" thick. Dunk rounds in seasoned olive oil and place on cookie sheet or jelly roll pan (I foil cover the pan for easier cleanup) Bake in 350*F oven ~15 minutes until the eggplant starts to brown a bit. Remove from oven, and smear a dab of tomato paste on the top of each round, then sprinkle with oregano and your favorite other italian spices. Optionally add your favorite pizza toppings (pepperoni, anchovies, burger, 'shrooms, peppers, etc.) and cover w/ mozzerrella cheese (or other favorite good melting cheese) and return to oven for a few minutes until cheese melts. This was actually something I used to make occasionally back in my pre-LC days, and I'm glad to find it's something that is still 'legal'

What is the weight loss range?

Gooserider
Fri, Jan-07-05, 18:36
What do you mean Powellnd? (not sure this is the right thread to be asking this, but...) If you are asking how much weight people on this board are attempting to get rid of, it varies tremendously. There are some folks I've seen that are only trying to lose about ten pounds, but many others are trying to deal with a MUCH larger issue, including the 'century club' made up of people with over 100 pounds (sometimes well over 100) to drop. Judging by the stats you list, (check the upper right corner of each post) I'd say you are fairly typical at 80lbs. It's doable, many here have lost that much and more, and more importantly, kept it off.

To get back somewhat to the topic of this thread, you will find that your balance between 'fridge foods' and 'shelf foods' will shift considerably. You will find that either a big fridge or frequent shopping trips will be needed. A second fridge will be very useful if you can pick one up cheap.

We find that we eat very little now that comes from cans and boxes on the shelf, and most of that is spices and condiment type things. Mostly we are eating meat and fresh vegetables. We do keep alot of meat in the freezer, as that allows us to save money by shopping just for sales and 'manager specials' . We don't do many frozen vegetables as they tend to be more expensive than fresh, and must be treated with caution as many contain unacceptable sauces or combinations of veggies. (and canned vegetables to me have always been really bad :Puke: tasting so we never did buy them. Now canned stuff is also frequently questionable because of the extra ingredients we shouldn't have.

Box stuff as a class also tends to be made from 'forbidden foods' with few exceptions, so that also goes away.

While there are low carb alternatives to much of the high carb stuff, I have noticed from the other discussions that the taste tends to be a mixed bag at best. Some of the 'frankenfoods' have also been accused of causing stalls by some folks. However IMHO the biggest single problem with the replacement foods are that they are tremendously EXPEN$IVE. I prefer to avoid them for the most part, and just stick with the meats and vegetables on a liberal induction type list, which is less expensive and my GF and I find quite adequate.

Gooserider

Sat, Jan-08-05, 00:21
Yeah it's better to stick to home-cooked (or even restaurant-cooked) meals. Those packaged foods can be a treat sometimes, but they can cause major stalls and besides, some of them are just full of chemicals!

This is a fun thread, and I was just commenting the other day that it seems I've no use for any of the aisles in the grocery store anymore.

Here's my list of regular grocery items (well, I'm kinda new, but this is the second week in a row that I've shopped mostly the perimetre of the store)

Water - 2 cases of 30x 500ml bottles (geesh, maybe I need a water cooler?)
Omega-3 Eggs
small package of pre-sliced swiss cheese, same in cheddar cheese
6 pack of those BabyBel portioned cheese bites (yum)
freshly grated parmesan
bag of pre-washed baby spinach
brocoli
mushrooms
supersize bag of pre-washed spring greens mix
english cucumber
cherry or grape tomatoes
green onions
garlic
lemons
boneless, skinless chicken breasts and/or thighs
fresh wild BC salmon
fresh dillweed
italian flat leaf parsley (from produce section, I like it better than plain old regular parsley)
fresh mint leaves (I use this in greek salad, also like to eat one leaf after dinner occasionally - it's almost dessert-like)
avocado
celery
boneless center cut pork chops
tiny container of heavy cream
thinly sliced turkey breast
canned crabmeat
canned oysters
canned tuna
lox
cream cheese
Newman's Own Oil & Vinegar dressing
Lighthouse Chunky Blue Cheese dressing
Olive Oil
Balsamic vinegar

That about covers it :)

I don't think my lists are much different from anyone elses. But boy is it true that there is a BIG difference in what I buy and what I eat. LOL

Cookies and Chips have been replaced wiht things like pork rinds. LOL

Pasta and Rice haven't really been replaced with anything, i just skip them wiht the occasional "treat" of LC pasta

I eat a lot more veggies than I used to, even though I've always liked veggies.

Eggs. Egggs. and more eeggggss! LOL. I am so sick of eggs. I've found creative things to do with them though.

Keto Crisp cereal and carb countdown milk must be here. I love cereal

Flax seeds/almond meal/wheat bran for hot cereal I make when i crave it

Meat of all kinds. Chicken, beef/steaks, seafood - shrimp/scallops/lobster chunks especially (I make a scampi-type dish out of them, minus any rice or pasta)

Real butter

Sami's Bakery LC bread (this MUST be in my fridge! LOL)

LC ice cream and chocolate for my now-very-occasional cravings, but i keep this on hand.

Splenda and Stevia. I love the stevia in my tea

1/2 and 1/2 or heavy cream

fresh veggies of about all kinds that are LC (broccoli, zucchini, yellow squash, asparagus)

Mushrooms. Must have mushrooms. A dish can never have too many mushrooms added to it. ;)

Cheese. I've always loved cheese though. Those little Babybel cheeses (the yellow ones are my favorite) are so good!

Salad stuff (cucumber, tomato, lots of lettuce)

I used to buy a lot of boxed stuff. I ate a lot of fast food, hamburger helper, and frozen dinners. I ate a lot of chips adn cookies and pasta. Many nights i just had pasta with butter and some Parmesan cheese for dinner. I miss pasta sometimes, but i don't miss the pounds I've lost by not eating it!

ECC =13 in the whole thing / 4 = 3.25 per serving

I'm writing down these ingredients right NOW!
