Hey!

I was biking for about maybe six hours today, with maybe three
or four hours of rest throughout.

I probably ride at an average speed of ~18 mph. I've gone as
high as 34 speeding downhill, and as slow as 6 taking my sweet
time climbing a hill (though I usually love to climb hills).

Looking at a site that lists calories burned by activity, I
see that a 190-lb. person riding for an hour at a modest pace
of ~15 mph burns 600-some-odd calories! I was 235 last
night...now, about an hour back from a sixty or eighty mile
day -- I forget what my odometer read when starting out --
though I am certain I did at least sixty four miles), which is
about what I typically ride when I ride (last week it was
eighty-five or so)...I'm...225!!!!

Thing is, I had stuff at Burger King for lunch...fish sandwich
with tartar sauce, chicken sandwich with mayo, a triple
cheeseburger and medium fries with a medium iced tea -- that's
like 2,416 calories right there! The only other thing I had
was a bowl of Total cereal earlier in the day (roughly one and
a half servings).

So I'm like...wow! TEN POUNDS! Though a lot of it must be
water weight...how to tell? Maybe I'll eat proper for the next
two days and see if I don't gain any back...?

What's the big deal with losing so much weight at once,
anyway? Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't try losing ten pounds
a week...eat proper, and exercise the hell out of myself!

I've seen various figures for cycling calories, usually about
40 per mile for a modest pace. Why would you eat all that
crap at Burger King in the middle of a ride? You can do 40 to
50 miles just on carbohydrate stores, although I don't
recommend it. A few light snacks along the way should keep
you from bonking on a ride like that. You probably lost some
carb stores and the associated water weight. IMHO, bike
riding is the most effective way to burn lots of calories. If
you ride x miles from home it's a pretty good bet you're
going to ride back, so quitting before your target distance
is not an option.

Wow, that's great! I mean, it's very easy to go miles and
miles...when I commute to work, it's around nine miles each
way (depending on the route, sometimes ten, sometimes
eight)...super!

Dude, it's flame-broiled!

Seriously, "traveling" has always meant food to me...well, I
love food to begin with (it's the great national pastime for
Chinese -- LOL!), and those energy bars feel so lame.

Actually, hunger isn't the point...it just seems to go
together, rigorous physical activity and hearty meals! I think
I work out just to justify dining out.

> You can do 40 to 50 miles just on carbohydrate stores,

Why not? I've done all-day rides of about fifty miles
without eating the entire day. Didn't feel any different.
Actually, it's amazing how easily hunger is ignored when
you're busy pedaling!

Yeah, but TEN POUNDS????

Oh, BTW -- I've just gained back three!!!!!

I ate one of them Healthy Choice microwavable entrees (only
280 calories -- and feels like it [that is, a snack]!) and a
protein shake (80 calories for 40g protein) and lots of water
(half gallon!)...and THREE POUNDS, JUST LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!

You haven't actually lost much of the essential weight, that
of fat stores. This will only happen to any noticed extent by
continuing your exercise regime. Keep at it and do it more
than just one day a week then you'll notice a difference that
will be longterm. BTW you have probably lost a lot of water
through dehydration and probably compounded this by taking in
slow-to-digest fast foods. Unless since the ride you've taken
in some mineral/sports drink like Gatorade you probably won't
have a good bowel movement for days. Of course depending on
your age this might be natural.

Bad move. High fat stuff. certainly fat in the tartare sauce,
mayo, cheese, fries as well as whatever fat content the meat
had. There's much better stuff you can eat. This stuff is fine
for the occasional treat, but not whilst exercising - it takes
an age to digest. Much better to eat something that's going to
provide decent fuel before you start riding. Porridge
(oatmeal) with fruit is a good starter. The porridge gives a
good low-fat, slow-release of carbohydrate and the fruit gives
a quicker release - so you've got something to get you going
and keep you going. Take plenty of fluid with you on the ride
and drink regularly.

Mostly fluid. You need to keep hydrated or you will lose
energy relatively quickly, get dehydrated and you can become
constipated.

Aim for a loss of about 2-3 lbs per week over the long term.
This is a healthy amount to lose that is easier to keep off.
Lose a lot quickly and you risk putting it back on quickly. I
know this - been there, done that :)

Take a dump and you'll only be up two for a net of eight lost.

Be sure to take a scale to work with you and weigh before and
after the coffee break and the mid-morning whiz, too. Keep
careful records, we'll be checking.

Seriously, weigh yourself about once a week. If you want to
take weight off and keep it off, plan on about 2.5 lb per week
max, and plan to hit plateaus and little up and down
transients. The transients can be discouraging (or
manic-depressive, maybe) if you weigh daily or more often.
Muscle is also more dense than fat, so as your body
composition changes, weight might not be the best index of
fitness. Maybe the way your pants fit might tell you more
about that. Or (if all else fails) how you FEEL.

Ten pounds isn't even a gallon and a half of sweat and water
vapor lost to hard breathing. So, yeah, you could lose five
kilos (5% of your body weight) on a long hot ride. And a half
gallon of water weighs four pounds, just under two kilos.

10lbs is not at all surprising. Simply water weight
fluctuation, normal for any runner in hot weather. A good
dump is 5 lbs.

You're right! I don't know where I got that...wishful
thinking?

It's actually 220 calories for 40g of protein...I just
checked! It's that GNC Mega-something-or-other whey with some
creatine and carbs....

Well, that explains the three pounds, then!

But now, I weighed myself again this morning...and I lost the
three pounds!!! I'm back down to 225!!!!

Actually, I don't really care. I look all of 180. No joke!
Buffed, etc. Folks routinely think me like thirty to seventy
pounds lighter than I really am.

I just started getting into monitoring my weight 'cause 1) I
recently read that one can be too heavy for one's bike (and
particularly its wheels -- I'm riding rough on 32 spokes when
the recommended number for my weight class is at least 36),
and 2) I am interested in parachuting, and most places that
take you up have an upper weight limit of 225 lbs.

Besides, I like to jog and feel like I'd enjoy it even more if
I were back down to ~180-200 lbs.

Ah, well, didn't realize this. Though stuff was supposed to
take longer? Digestion, etc.

I can't wait for them to perfect the process of creating meat
in the laboratory!

Did anyone else read or hear about this in the news (not to be
confused with the other story about some guy finding out how
to turn dark meat into white meat)? It was like three weeks
ago...some scientist(s) created actual meat in the
laboratory!!!!!

You're in high tech? Maybe you know about this stuff?

One of the most promising things about this technology would
be the ability to manufacture perfectly fatless meat full of
vitamins and minerals!!!

perfectly fatless meat isn't all that fun to eat, or cook,
anyway. Go with a protein powder if that's what you're after.

I agree Bill.

I weigh myself more often than once a week, but the
fluctuations are wild day to day, and I'm only 130 lb (give
or take, depending on the time of day or what I did the day
before etc.) If I eat something salty and drink a lot of
fluids one evening, I can be up 3 or 4 pounds the next day -
and of course, women fluctuate like crazy just due to time of
the month. If I'm a bit dehydrated in the morning, boom, I'm
down weight - not fat, just water weight. I just look for the
point I seem to be fluctuating around - the fulcrum. When I
was actively dieting, I used to graph my weight (I had
medically supervised weigh ins 3x per week), and while the
overall long term trend went steadily down, day to day, week
to week, it fluctuated all over the place, and I had to learn
to ignore that (omigod, I'm trying so hard and I'm not
losing!!!....omigod, I'm up 1/2 lb...argh I'm so
discouraged!!).

The big picture view is the one that matters. If a person who
weighs 130 can fluctuate over a 5-7 pound range strictly due
to fluid, a person who is 225 may have an even wider range. My
late father, who weighed more than 320...,and yes, obesity
contributed to his early death at 63), used to comment that
his weight would fluctuate 15 lb or so just due to water.

I just about died when I saw what NYC had for lunch. Never
mind weight loss, talk about a totally over the top junky,
high fat high calorie pig out . You might as well just eat a
brick of lard for all the nutrition that mess of fast food
contained.

I was watching a thing on TV about a guy who weighed more than
1000 lb. He was hospitalized (congestive heart failure), and
one thing they had to deal with immediately
was....malnutrition. He was eating mountains of crap but
despite the volume of calories, was actually malnourished
which was contributing to his health issues. Kinda wild.

I've only been maintaining for 7 months now, but I am
extremely conscious of making what I do eat count i.e. no more
empty calories, that make me fat, and contribute nothing to
keeping the machine running well.

1. Glycogen store is about 900 grams, good for 3600 calories.
Water reserve for processing the glycogen is 3600 grams,
total 4,500 grams, or just shy of 10 pounds.

2. Sweat is limited to about 2% of bodyweight between
hydrations, or thereabouts, say 4 pounds in your case. The
water content of your lunch probably partially hydrated
you, so you could have sweat some of that off as well.

So if you pushed yourself most of the way to the max, it's
possible to have lost 10 pounds. The thing is: is your
result reproducible under the same conditions; and is it
possible to continue the process without replenishing your
reserve water supply?

What a pile of absolute crap.

Weight comes down to energy in vs energy out, you can burn an
incredible amount of energy with exersize. There are long
distance hikers who need 5,000+ calories per day, to break
even, and they are just walking, mind you often with an over
25kg pack on their back.

The human body is a complex mechanism, that manufactures and
uses chemicals, at various rates, depending on what it's
central computer is asking it to do. There are certain
requirements that need to be met, and exersize makes this
more critical.

You should talk to your doctor, he/she can recommend a
nutritionist to talk to, who can train you into determining
the right foods, to meet your needs, both on and off bike.

The issue on a long ride, is you need to eat something, and
that gives you two options, carry it, or buy it. It's easier
to control it, if you carry it. The problem is that most
things, need refrigeration, but there are solutions. Visit a
camping store, or an outdoor store with a good camping
selection, and pick up a small insulated container that will
hold a small cache of food. This can go in a backpack or
pannier. Forget the freezer packs, they add weight without
usability. Better idea is buy a case of water, and throw it in
your freezer. Put a couple of bottles in your insulated
container with your food. Maybe add a small plastic bag with
something like Gatorade powder. Also carry something like a
trail-mix, make your own, and yes you can throw something
sweet in it like Smarties. The trail-mix goes in a jersey or
jacket pocket, so you can nibble as you ride, also carry
water, a couple of bike attached bottles helps, two is better,
you can mix some Gatorade powder in one, and leave the other
plain. A good idea is to use bottles that are different
colours, or get some coloured electrical tape, and put a ring
around one bottle, then you instantly know which is water and
which is "enhanced".

When you stop for lunch, your lunch will be nice and cool, and
the frozen water will have melted, at least partly. After you
eat, use the frozen water bottles to top up the on bike
bottles..... Put all your refuse back in your insulated
container, and your ready to continue.

Did you sweat, during your ride? If so, then it's likely that
most of it is water. 1L of water weighs 1kg, 10lbs is 4.54kg,
so you lost 4.54L of water, or 4 4/5 US Quarts of water. So
for a Sixty mile ride you need 4/5 Quarts of water for every
10 miles.... Something to keep in mind when planning a long
distance ride.

When you lose a lot in water, it's not good, you can throw off
your electrolite balance.

I'd expect as much were I fasting for 24 hours, but this was

Well, I'm at 130 now! I'm really curious how quickly I can
shed it (while eating properly and exercising, of course --
not talking about starvation here) and how long I can keep it
off. I don't feel much differently, but I do miss that
"aaahhh" feeling of a nice thick meal.

WTF is your obsession with the scale? You should weigh
yourself once per week, at the same time of day, preferably
morning. It is PERFECTLY NORMAL to lose 3 lbs overnight, by
suppertime it'll be back. I'm for passing a law that scales

Sig files that are 20-30 times the size of your "contribution"
to the thread are rude regardless of content. How about using
it selectively instead of EVERY SINGLE TIME? (Also, to be a
"proper" sig file it should be designated as such, and not
just pasted on in regular text. That way it gets removed if
someone actually wants to reply to your very mimimal /on
topic/ comments.)

I'm not going to feed your wanking habit, hobbit. (Besides, if
I start insulting people and calling them "pigs" and
"heffers", THEN my appearance would be fair game.)

How'd you get in here, anyway?

authorities after him -- wonder if "The Bill" is any
