Battle to ban aspartame heats up in New Mexico Environmental
Improvement Board By Stephen Fox Stephen@santafefineart.com

Posted: 23 September 2005

New Mexico takes the lead in the effort to prohibit the sale
of Neurotoxic Artificial Sweetener, Aspartame

We are most grateful for Mr. James S. Turner's letter [see
below for a link to the letter], which was sent to many
members of the Legislature, the Attorney General, the
Governor, most of the media, as well as all of the members of
the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board, which has been
considering an addition to the New Mexico Administrative Code,
to not only identify aspartame as a poisonous adulterant, but
to prohibit the sale thereof throughout the state. Turner's
brilliant and effective influence on President Richard Nixon
resulted in the FDA rescinding the approval for cyclamates in
1969, and thus serves as a powerful precedent for the New
Mexico Environmental Improvement Board to do the same in 2005
re: aspartame!

New Mexico Legislators, the Governor, the Attorney General,
plaintiff's lawyers, and many physicians, particularly
pediatricians, are rapidly becoming very aware of the
neurodegenerative effects of aspartame. Many have become quite
effective spokesmen for this effort, but many others have a
tendency to sit on the fence, or not dare to challenge the FDA
or the even mightier corporations like Coca-Cola, Pepsi,
Dannon Yogurt, Wrigley's Gum, Monsanto, and the Japanese
corporation, Ajinomoto, the world's largest manufacturer of
both Monosodium Glutamate and Aspartame.

Ajinomoto is so concerned about the EIB hearing in New Mexico,
they hired a Washington D.C. lawyer to present a brief which
basically said that no state has the power to ban anything
approved by the FDA, no matter how harmful, poisonous, or
neurotoxic the growing mountain of evidence might be. This is
not really the right stance to a regulatory board or to a
legislator, to tell them they are powerless to correct past or
even prevent future neurological damage done by aspartame.
Monsanto's brief and the brief from the industry front group,
the Calorie Control Council, both tell the EIB that they must
not move forward with any hearing in which physicians,
victims, and consumer advocates can tell the truth about the
neurodegenerative effects of aspartame because to do so would
countermand the usual federal preemption mythology allowing
corporations to hide behind their products' FDA approval. That
mythology has been crumbling badly for quite some time in New
Mexico and in many other states.

The vote by the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board
will held on October 4, 2005, Room 317 in the New Mexico
Capitol. This is going to be a very important decision which
will affect billions of consumers in every state and in
every nation!

Governor Richardson could use his influence to request the
board to ban aspartame, thus putting his constituents' health
ahead of not rocking the boat with mega-corporations who will
certainly object to such a ban, the first of its kind in the
United States:

Gold points out that industry methanol assays were too
insensitive to properly measure blood methanol levels.

Fully 11% of aspartame is methanol-- 1,120 mg aspartame in 2 L
diet soda, almost six 12-oz cans, gives 123 mg methanol (wood
alcohol). If 30% of the methanol is turned into formaldehyde,
the amount of formaldehyde is 18 times the USA EPA limit for
daily formaldehyde in drinking water, 2 mg in 2 L water.

Aspartame is made of phenylalanine (50% by weight) and
aspartic acid (39%), both ordinary amino acids, bound loosely
together by methanol (wood alcohol, 11%). The readily released
methanol from aspartame is within hours turned by the liver
into formaldehyde and then formic acid, both potent,
cumulative toxins.
