Hiya Michelle

Its great starting a journal . Gives you good motivation to keep going and it also gives people like me a sneak into your world. Read your days menu and I think you should cut out the diet coke as this can slow down the weight, also it is water that helps flush the fat away, so you should try drinking water, water and some more water, and for every diet coke another glass of water. Also be wary of cheese and cream as this also stalls people , especially on induction. If you have any queries just post and someone will answer. Keep it up you are going to do just great.

Thanks for your reply.
I should add that I've been lc-ing for two years, and the only things that have stalled me to date are not sticking to the plan (well, obviously) and the pill.
The water is at a minimum of 2-3L a day, the diet coke is at a maximum of two glasses, and it's caffeine free since I've discovered that caffeine gives me costochondritis. Big pain.
I ended having the cream last night as I need to up my fat calories to get better percentages for the day, and I've tried to chug oil in the past, and the oil barely made it down my throat.
But thanks for your suggestions and if I have any questions, you can bet I'll post them!
Thanks Again!

Glad you've decided to join the project!

Yes, finding creative ways to increase fat intake without relying on dairy products is definitely a challenge. I do sip fresh flax oil (which I take as an EFA supplement, so I don't count it as food intake) ... but I don't particularly "enjoy" the experience!

Hope your Lean Protein day goes well today :)

Do, I believe my feelings on this are well-known: Barforama!

Michelle, Welcome to our little group project! We are a small group but we (I'm taking the liberty of speaking for all) are glad to have you join us. Last week I tried Stillman for the first time - interesting effects: less hunger, tames some cravings.

I hope you enjoy doing the study with us!

Hubby is doing the challenge too! So two more people on board!
He says it's not that tough so far, except remembering which days are which.
Of course, this is a man who doesn't get cravings, who actually thinks some things are too sweet. Just about the only thing he misses on low-carb is bread. Hmph.
His foods and calorie counts are pretty close to mine, although his calories are a bit higher, seeing as how he weighs 42lbs more than me at the moment. But it's nice to have the extra support...

Hmph indeed! This is great that your DH is doing the project with you (and us). Will you post his stats when you post yours?

A couple of comments: it's Tuff Luv Tag Team time; see my journal, I've been subjected to this.

Ketchup is not one of the allowed condiments. :( Only spices and lemon juice (in moderation) allowed. The intent is to keep fat and carbs to an absolute minimum. I believe a max of 5 carbs from egg, lemon juice, etc are allowed. Check the Sticki for this project for Judi's helpful hints for guidelines. In the first group project (& this one) it was decided to eat only egg whites on Stillman days and save the yolks for Cal boost days or Reg LC days.

I'd also suggest reading the thread from the first project, read it here:
http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16104
This will give you the background in the whys and reasons of the food rules.

Hope you enjoy your calorie boost day.

I realized about the egg whites after eating the yolks. But by then it was too late to do anything.
The sheet I printed out (called Basics or the LCPV.2 Calendar) said that on Stillman days, you can have "lemon/lime juice, herbs, spices, hot sauce, soy sauce, Splenda, etc. in moderation." Plus I have Stillman's book, and he says you can have ketchup and/or cocktail sauce in moderation. So I'm a little confused.
I found that quote here, if it helps... http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?threadid=24977
It's the 6th message on the first page.
Well, if I was wrong, at least I'll find out before the next Stillman day...
And yes, I will report on hubby's progress as we go along!

1 cup (after cooking) spaghetti squash
(I know it's not technically a leafy green, but it was in danger of mutating into one if I didn't eat it tonight) ;-)
4 Tbsp butter
Splenda/brown sugar twin
1/8 tsp cinnamon
Salad with 3 Tbsp creamy cucumber dressing
3 oz cucumber

at least 3 liters of water today

......Plus I have Stillman's book, and he says you can have ketchup and/or cocktail sauce in moderation. So I'm a little confused.hi Michelle .. yes, some sugary things are listed in the original Stillman plan {{shudder}} that were decided it would be best to not include for the purpose of the project. I'm thinking to refer to Days 2 & 4 as "Lean Protein" days from now on, to avoid further confusion. I have the original Stillman's Quick Weight Loss book too ... it's an interesting read. There's much that's accurate, even though the science and reasons hadn't been discovered yet .. pub. in 1967. But there''s much that's inaccurate, and we now know more about the effects of insulin on inhibiting fat-burning and promoting fat storage. Stillman recommends that if you feel faint while following his Quick Weight Loss diet, you should drink sweetened juice, or eat a hard candy!

As a substitute for ketchup, do you like mustard? Not the bright yellow hotdog stuff, although that's fine ... but President's Choice or Our Compliments have some delicious gourmet mustards that run less than 1g carb per Tbsp. (obviously not the honey dijon or sweet russian style ;))

Take care,

Doreen

... and welcome to our project!

OK, I'm chiming in here in hopes it helps (and keep in mind that even for we few 'veterans' doing this for the 2nd time, the first week is often a shakedown, getting used to this stuff)...

The answer to your "question" above is basically, if it's not on the LCPV.2 Calendar/Basics, it's probably NOT allowed. It's a lot simpler this way, and we've worked out the bugs.

Therefore, NO nuts (white/carbs) if it's not a Regular LC day for you, NO ketchup (heck I don't think it's allowed even on Regular LC...., it's loaded with sugar).

We used Stillman as a starting point, and then made the rules a bit tighter because of what we're trying to do... all the condiments listed on the Basics have in common that they are fairly LC to really LC, as well as low-fat.

Go by the worksheet, K? and hang in there :D it's a great start!

PS: for flavoring extra-lean ground beef (yech! plain) I use a sugarfree taco seasoning that's home-made and very simple: some chili powder, some hot sauce, some salt, some garlic and chopped parsley to taste (if enough parsley, I count it to my 1 Cup of Shredded Green Leafy Stuff for the day).

Michelle
Fri, Nov-30-01, 00:56
The reason I thought ketchup was allowed was because Stillman allows it and because of the "etc." after Splenda in the quote. What does the etc stand for? Or should it have been removed from the sentence?
Thanks!

Michelle,

You did a great lean protein day! Last week on Day 4 (2nd LP day) I decided to have the optional 1 cup lettuce. It was delicious! Now I have to admit that I forgot to have lettuce yesterday 'cause I was too busy & tired to think of it. :o I feel like I've cheated myself out of a treat ;)

Mental note to self: remember I'm allowed 1 c lettuce on days 2 & 4.

I hope you're enjoying your Cal Boost day & the veggies.

2 eggs, scrambled
1 pat butter
1 tbsp mayo

3 cups salad mix (radicchio, endive, romaine, iceberg)
3 tbsp ranch dressing
4 oz cucumber
8 oz cooked ham

Thoughts : Couldn't get to 25g of carbs. 23g is still pretty good. Looking forward to cheese and cream tomorrow! 4 days no dairy, wow!
I'm going to a cookie exchange/pot luck tomorrow. I'm not worried about the pot luck, since I'm bringing a pizza meatloaf. But I have to find people to give the cookies to so I don't eat them! Maybe I'll drop them off at hubby's work, for his co-workers...

I too found it difficult to consume a lot of green veggie carbs in the form of salads and leafy stuff. Cooked veggies are denser and more bang for the buck. Brussels sprouts and cabbage are good.

Karen mad a list for the project back in August ... if you go to the index page of this Group Journals and Projects forum, scroll down the thread list, you'll see High Carb Green Vegetables. Even spinach, which I love, is so low in carbs, you'd have to eat a whole bag of it to get 11 carbs. :daze:

Foods Eaten :
Breakfast :
Now I was baking sugar free macaroons all morning. That explains the 4 egg yolks in my breakfast. i couldn't just throw them out...
1 whole egg
4 egg yolks
1 pat butter
1 slice cheese
7 thin pieces bacon

Snack/Lunch :
12 baked and raw sugar free macaroons

Supper :
2 eggs
7 thin slices bacon
2 slices cheese
1 pat butter

I went to a pot luck/cookie swap so I don't know the exact counts for any of this. So the calorie counts at the end of my post are only until supper.

Pot Luck :
3 glasses dry white wine
3/8 ham and cheese quiche (crust not eaten)
1 one inch slice pizza meatloaf (made by me)
4-5 oz cheese cubes
cubed cantalope, honeydew, sliced strawberries

Total calories : (minus the potluck) 1888
Total protein : (minus the potluck) 83g
% calories from protein : 17%

Total grams of fat : 161g
% calories from fat : 76%

Total grams of carbs : 32g
% calories from carbs : 7%

Thoughts : Overall, I stayed pretty low-carb despite the pot-luck. the cookies went straight into the freezer when I got home. But then, having had some wine, and none of the goodies the others had, I started to feel I deserved something so I had a few servings of sugar free chocolate (Russell Stover).
Well, 2AM the chocolates decided to come right back out by any possible exit, so I didn't count those calories although I probably did absorb some.
Everyone loved the sugar free macaroons since they were low fat and sugar free!

Don't know if you know this, Michelle, but Dijonnaise is Dijon Mustard mixed with Mayonnaise... I'd probably NOT use this on a Lean Protein day.

If it helps, I've been nuking, pan poaching or baking White Meat Chicken and Fish (Pollock, for instance) in a blend of chicken broth, lemon juice and Dijon. VERY tasty and everything stays moist.

You're doing great!

Michelle
Wed, Dec-05-01, 16:06
That's what I thought too, BUT, according to my trusty Netzer,
Mustard blend (Best Foods/Hellman's Dijonnaise), 1 tsp.
5 cals
0g protein
0g fat
1g carb

Not that much different from lemon juice or some spices.
Anyway, it was used to dip in, and about 2/3 of it was still on the plate when I was done.
Thanks!
