Ive been training pretty hard for the past 6 months, running or biking almost every single day and mixing weight lifting in there about 3 or 4 times a week. My question is, does anyone else seem to retain water after a hard day of training? I seem to always retain water after a hard days worth of training and I feel really bloated. Is this normal? I think im drinking enough water, could it be that im not?

Thanks
Alexi

I drink about a gallon of water a day and on my lifting days it seems as if I never drop any weight on those days if I weigh in. It's my off days that I see the scale move, so I imagine it's water retention to aid in rebuilding the muscle (along with protein + other stuff).

I'm wondering the same thing. This weekend I ran a 50 mile race in Colorado. The day before the race I weighed 178. The day after the race I weighed 188. It was a very difficult race with a lot of boulder climbing and face plants. Every muscle in my body is sore today. It makes sense that inflammation of the muscles will cause water retention.

Yea, I definitely think part of my water retention is from torn muscles being repaired and the necessity of water in making those repairs. It just seems like ill stay "bloated" for like 3 or 4 days after I run 10 or 12 miles. Im starting to think that I might not be hydrating myself good enough, prior to the exercise.........maybe ill try drinking alot of water a few hours before exercising.

Four days after the race I'm down to 174. I had carb-loaded for three days before the race, which put me up to 178. Now I'm back to my lowcarb weight. All the soreness is gone except for the calves. Planning another 50 mile race in Sept.

I have real issues with this, In fact its happening right now. I had taken a 3 week break from lifting, or doing any high intensity, and yesteday I started up again with the first part of my 3 day split, followed by an HIIT session on the eliptical. Today my body is sore, especially in the legs and my pants are tight.

I'll admit, it can be a bit discouraging. TOM is just around the corner too, so I'm sure thats not helping.

riotkitty, the same thing happens to me; one day my jeans are loose, then ill either run or lift heavy, and the next day, my jeans are tight. Obviously its just water and I guess we just have to accept it while our bodies repair themselves.
