not sure if this belongs here, but i could really use some advice.

i'm on a specific low-carb meal plan, and one of the foods listed to eat every day is cottage cheese. this doesn't work well for me, being lactose intolerant. i've managed to pretty much cut out all other dairy, but i'm still left bloated and in pain by the end of the day.

does anyone know of a good substitute for cottage cheese, that would have similar nutritional values? i thought of peanut butter, as it has the protein i need (15g or so), but the fat content is something like 14g, compared to 1.3g with the low-fat cottage cheese i've been eating.

i love cottage cheese, so i've been eating it anyway (1 cup every day, with some fruit), but now that i'm 13 days away from my wedding, i want to stay away from the foods i know are going to cause me to bloat and become uncomfortable.

any suggestions?? i'm still waiting to hear back from my trainer, but she seems hung up on me eating cottage cheese.

thanks!!!

Riccota is a good substitute :) Lower in carbs.

Riccota is also dairy and would cause the same problems as cottage cheese.

Tuna fish, or any white fish would be low in carbs and high in protein.

tuna would be great, except it's what i eat for lunch or supper (i alternate chicken/tuna/salmon)

honestly, after 8 weeks, i'm getting pretty tired of tuna/chicken/salmon! i haven't yet tried tuna mashed up with avocado- that sounds good!! i'll have to try that next.

maybe there's a soy-based product i can try instead of cottage cheese... back to the health food store i go!!

i'm rather impressed with my weight loss success... i've been trying for 2 years to get it back under control, and it was only a few months from the wedding before i truly got motivated enough!

Why are you restricting yourself so much?!?!?!

I don't know if this has been posted already but there is soy cheese. It looks pretty good actually. Be careful of tuna. It contains mercury and you don't want to eat it on a daily basis.

Why are you restricting yourself so much?!?!?!

i'm following the meal plan given to me by my trainer. my meals consist of egg whites/oatmeal/fruit/tons of veggies/green leafy salads/cottage cheese/tuna or salmon or chicken/avocado/brown rice or whole wheat pasta/almonds/protein shake... so really, i'm not restricting. it's the lean proteins i want, and this is by no means a permanent meal plan for me! another week or 2, then i'll be back on somewhat normal foods!!

i found a rice cheese that looked like it might be ok... it still had a bit of dairy in it, but maybe i'll give it a try. and soy cheese might also be good, except the one i found at the grocery store didn't have much for protein in it, which surprised me.

i'm just getting rather frustrated and discouraged!!

thanks for the tips and suggestions!!

Wow...that doesn't sound low carb to me. Just the brown rice alone would throw any one of us off...43 or so net carbs in a cupful. Looking at your daily menu, you would be taking in over 100g of carbs a day. Under 100 daily is considered LC, I think.

Bailykins, how long have you been low carbing? I see you lost quite a bit of weight but do you think that you will be able to do this for a lifetime? Wheat for some, can cause bloating so you might want to avoid that for a couple of weeks before your wedding, as well. Since it appears that you are avoiding fats, you may not be interested in this, but try adding a couple of ozs of lean meat. This will keep your protein levels up and it won't contribute to bloating.

Your trainer might be insisting that you eat cottage cheese because he/she doesn't know of a substitute. Regardless, any diet should allow alternatives for food alergies.

How about dicing up some tofu and adding seasonings? It should have about the same amount of fat and protein as cottage cheese.

If your problem is lactose, the milk sugar, rather than casein, the milk protein, then you should be able to take tablets that allow you to eat dairy despite your problem with it. I don't remember what the tablets are called.

The tablets are called Lactaid.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking.

I tried this high protein pudding the other day and it's awesome. http://www.netrition.com/instone_pudding_page.html
It's a little pricey, but it's so good I'm gonna buy a case of it I think. It's soy based, it has 20 grams of protein, and 0 or 1 net carb depending on the flavor.

Perhaps my meal plan isn't technically "low-carb", but certainly, based on my eating habits before, it's completely low-carb for me!

serving sizes of everything except the veggies and cottage cheese is only half a cup (of the rice, fruit, oatmeal, egg whites, etc) and only have a quarter of a cup of almonds.

but really, all i was looking for was a few suggestions for an alternative to cottage cheese, and thought i might find some here - which i have, thank you very much for your words of encouragement and support!
