RALEIGH, N.C. - Inspired by the documentary "Super Size Me," Merab Morgan decided to give a fast-food-only diet a try. The construction worker and mother of two ate only at McDonald's for 90 days — and dropped 37 pounds in the process.

It was a vastly different outcome than what happened in the documentary to filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who put on 30 pounds and saw his health deteriorate after 5,000 calories a day of nothing but McDonald's food.

Morgan, from Raleigh, thought the documentary had unfairly targeted the world's largest restaurant company, implying that the obese were victims of a careless corporate giant. People are responsible for what they eat, she said, not restaurants. The problem with a McDonald's-only diet isn't what's on the menu, but the choices made from it, she said.

"I thought it's two birds with one stone — to lose weight and to prove a point for the little fat people," Morgan said. "Just because they accidentally put an apple pie in my bag instead of my apple dippers doesn't mean I'm going to say, 'Oh, I can eat the apple pie.'"

Spurlock, who turned his surprise-hit movie into a TV show on the FX network, isn't talking about Morgan or the many other McDieters who have criticized his film and found success losing weight by eating healthy foods off the McDonald's menu, said his publicist, David Magdael.

One person went so far as to make her own independent film about dieting at McDonald's. "Me and Mickey D" follows Soso Whaley, of Kensington, N.H., as she spends three 30-day periods on the diet. She dropped from 175 to 139 pounds, eating 2,000 calories-a-day at McDonald's.

"I had to think about what I was eating," Whaley said. "I couldn't just walk in there and say 'I'll take a cinnamon bun and a Diet Coke.' ... I know a lot of people are really turned off by the whole thought of monitoring what they are eating, but that's part of the problem."

As might be expected, McDonald's also objected to the impressions left by Spurlock's film. Walt Riker, the company's vice president of corporate communications, said Oak Brook, Ill.-based company is pleased — but not surprised — that some customers have lost weight eating only at the fast-food giant.

Spurlock's film "really spurred a backlash based on common sense," Riker said.

Morgan used nutritional information downloaded from McDonald's Web site to create meal plans of no more than 1,400 calories a day. She only ate french fries twice, usually choosing burgers and salads. Those choices are a stark contrast with those made by Spurlock, who ate every menu item at least once.

At the end of the 90 days, she had dropped from 227 to 190 pounds.

"It feels great," she said. "Because, the truth of the matter is that beauty is power, and if you're fat, or your overweight, then people don't really take you seriously."

Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, agreed that a low-calorie, McDonald's-only diet can help people lose weight but said it may not offer enough long-term variety. Whatever an individual does to lose weight, they need to do for the rest of their life, she said.

Morgan said she hasn't decided if she will stick with the McDonald's-only plan to reach her goal of 150 pounds. But she does have one complaint about McDonald's.

"If I could suggest anything to McDonald's, I would suggest the McMargarita," Morgan said. "Dine-in only, of course."

under 1500 cals? what did she eat at mc donalds? water? or one hamburger for dinner, you know how small that is? I droped that same amount of weight doing LC in half the time and im never hungery and gave up very few of my fav foods.

You can eat low cal, low carb, low anything at McDonalds. It's just about making the right choices.

I avoid McDonalds because of all the transfats and soy that they use. That and I don't like the taste of most of their food.

I dont like mc donalds cus of all the chemicals they put into EVERYTHING. even those nice little apples they have.

It is very possible to lose weight eating only McDonalds. Maybe she isn't eating the whole thing... like maybe she's only eating half a burger and no soda stuff like that. Just off the top of my head, for breakfast i could eat the egg sandwich and ditch the bread, for lunch a salad with grilled chicken and use only a little sauce, ditch croutons, for dinner a meat sandwich of some kind, with a small side salad, avoid all/most bread and use a tiny amount of non LF dressing on salad.


Anyway, that one can artfully manuever around McDonalds calorie laden addictive food menu and manage to eat very little food is meaningless. The problem isn't the food, it's the propaganda and the presence of restaurants like McDonalds. One would have to be lying to feel fast food has not played a role in encouraging obesity and health related problems.

I resort to FF from time to time. Usually its a salad, sometimes a burger wrapped "protein-style". Sometimes the salads are actually rather good. But I'd rather have my own really. :p

they add a preservative to their salad so it stays green same with the apples. I rather just get some freshness

you want heathy fast food? go to wendys! I dont know if you could do LC their, maybe you are eating in the 50-75g range. You would think wendys would do more advertising of their healthy menu. Their is nothing like it in other major fast food changes.

I agree with the others you can LC anywhere you just have to use what you have learned. I have gone into Wendy's, Burger King and McD's and ordered like a double whopper minus bun and ketchup. I drank water with it. I try to avoid their cheeses and bacon simply cause I don't know what type they use so don't know if it has carbs or not. The brand of cheese I use at home (Kraft) has no carbs. The bacon is probably not nitrate free so I avoid that because of the sugars. I have still lost no problem when I ate this way. Subway has a carb wrap thats 5 grams. Its wonderful LOL. I don't eat FF often but I have learned when I do its possible to LC it.

Agreed. The flexibility of LCing is what makes me feel I can do this for life. I've rarely been stuck gnawing the back of my hand because there is NOTHING LC to eat.

Agreed, Woo. Rampant consumerism and limitless growth manifests in our health and booties as well as our strip malls and atmosphere. Maybe this is how we stop the seemingly relentless rush for the cliff? Just. one. quiet. voice. at. a. time. . .

Its The Wooo, you sum it up very well!

But I also see that it is the choices. No one says anyone has to eat every meal, or one meal a day at Ronnie Mac's Hamburger Emporeum. However, the choices one makes dictate ones menu there.

You could just as easily go to any supermarket, and buy and eat pastries and cakes and bulk up like Akibono! But could you blame the market for making you fat?

And several here are spot on with the chemicals in the food at many fast food places. I do eat at Mickey D's once in a while, and like has been said, I get a salad, ditch the croutons, and bring in some LC dressing. I get a double cheese burger, no ketchup and ditch the bun.

I do strictly limit visits there, both for me and my kids due to the trans fats in everything!
