For some reason, people have really got a one track mind when it comes to this issue.

Anybody here eat eggs benedict for breakfast EVERY DAY? At least eggs benedict as shown has some good stuff, too, and is meant for a once in a while treat! Many of the other foods were like this, too.

How about french fries? Anybody eat them every day? No redeeming characteristics there...

Well, I posted this because you will notice that some of the blurbs were supplied by Pritikin Foundation nutritionalists, which I thought was kind of funny. A lot of the blurbs also preached hysterically about heart stopping, artery clogging saturated animal fat.

Yes, I laughed quite a bit seeing these low-fat crusaders (which seemed to come straight from the early 90s) decry these high fat foods.

IMHO this article only shows a desperate attempt from the author to exorcise his or her desire to indulge in a forbidden pleasure...delicious animal fat!

I expected to find the counter list of the 10 worse tasting/'healthiest' foods supplied by the Pritikins. You know, rice cakes, plain tofu, pureed wheat grass juice, etc.

Idiots.
The only food on there I can conclusively agree is totally unhealthy are the french fries. Even carby faire like lasagna and even fettuccini alfredo are fairly healthy. Foie gras is very very healthy. The only thing unhealthy about the burger meal are the fries and the roll on the burger (sugar, no nutrition).

A food having a lot of calories isn't unhealthy... it just means your serving sizes (fat grams for us, carbs for them) are too big. Trying to watch fat in isolation of calories is stupid, because fat is a neutral energy source, how it acts depends on carbohydrate state. Watch carbs, not fats.

Foie gras is very very healthy.

There's lots of ducks that would argue that. :p

Yes, foie gras maybe good for you but I still say you shouldn't eat it. I am not a vegetarian so I think it is ok to eat meat but at the same time I don't think we should be actively mean to the animals what we eat. Let's say veal is to beef as foie gras is to poultry.

Interesting that I understand that in order to fatten up the birds to come up with foie gras they end up feeding them a lot of carbs (may be mistaken but I think that is correct.) I guess it would make sense because eating carbs is the fastest way to fatten up people up.

I believe that some farmers claim that THEY aren't that mean to the animals to produce foie gras but they admit that other farmers may be. I guess I just think that foie gras isn't cool.

Yeah, they actually force feed the birds corn. Its to intentionally give them fatty liver disease, which is quite delicious, but probably not fun for the bird. Its been outlawed in CA now. I suppose that's probably good, although pate lovers are not happy. I'm torn about it. Animals that eat other animals have a hard time not being cruel to their food. Just ask my cat. On the other hand, I do have empathy for the critters I eat.... to some degree. :yum:

#1 Many people are fooled by this dish because it contains eggs. But the fact is, it packs in the fat and cholesterol. A good amount of fat comes straight from the sauce—a mixture of egg yolks, butter and hot sauce.

Sounds Yummy...

#2 "Good burgers need some fat. It keeps it nice and moist," says Executive Chef Stephen Trojahn of New York City's 21 Club restaurant. All cheeseburgers are not created equal, but they are all fattening. Nutritionists say the saturated fat found in them can lead to heart attacks, strokes and prostate or colon cancer. What are the bad ingredients? Start with two pieces of white bread (refined sugar), cheese and fried, fatty red meat. If you add condiments, like mayonnaise, that makes it even worse.

I just had a Cheeseburger (8 oz. Ground Chuck + 4 oz. Ground Turkey + 1 slice Kraft Double Calcium - With Vit. D - American Cheese) this afternoon with Eggs, Colby Jack Cheese, and Turkey Sausage. It was delicious...

#3 Lavish French foods are always fulfilling, but they can fill your arteries, as well. Duck is considered poultry, but—unlike the white meat of chicken—it is extremely fatty. The main step in preparing this dish is to cook it in its own fat

I love DUCK !!! I eat it whenever I can find it...and my Cholesterol/Triglycerides are great:

08 Months (175 Total, 122 LDL, 33 HDL, 19 VLDL, 96 TGs, 84 Glucose)
27 Months (150 Total, 099 LDL, 40 HDL, 11 VLDL, 55 TGs, 86 Glucose)
Change... (-25 Total, -23 LDL, +7 HDL, -8 VLDL, -41 TGs, +2 Glucose)

Unfortunately, no before numbers (which were probably high), but the 8 to 27 Months change speaks for itself.

#4 "We call this one the 'triple bypass special,'" says Dr. James Kenny of the Pritikin Longevity Center in Florida. Fettuccine Alfredo is purely pasta, cheese, butter and cream; there's nothing remotely healthy about it. Too bad this one tastes so good.

Pasta Alfredo (especially with Shrimp) is delicious and very cheap and easy to make. But, you do have to limit the amount of Pasta you eat because regular Pasta is high in carbs and Dreamfields gives me the runs (if I eat too much.)

#5 The enemy of all Americans is the French fry. It's the staple food of McDonald's, and it can accompany just about any meal. These tasty treats are simply potatoes (starch) deep fried in oil. "The oils most fries are cooked with, I wouldn't feed to a pet," says Nutritionist Lauren Slayton of Food Trainers in New York City.

Agreed in part...The biggest problem is the Partially Hydrogenated Oils. While Fries are high in Carbs, if you can limit your serving size, a few fries every once in a while won't do too much harm as long as you fry them yourself in Coconut Oil and make sure they don't already contain PH Oils or added Sugar. The other problem is most folks can't or won't eat just a few fries (since they are used to the 6-8 oz. portions served at most restraunts).

#6 [i]"Foie Gras sounds elegant in French, but it's liver—fatty liver," says Nutritionist Lauren Slayton of Food Trainers in New York City. "Fat has more than double the calories of protein and carbohydrates for any portion." Foie gras may not look like it's as fattening as the other meals on the list, because it doesn't contain as many calories. But think again. The 300 to 400 calories are just for the liver itself. Depending on how it is prepared, it can weigh in at outrageous amounts of fat and calories.

After trying Beef Liver, I won't eat the Liver of any animal. It just plain tastes horrible.

[b]#8 Deep fried and ready to clog any artery—that's fried chicken. And it's even more fattening when you eat the dark meat. "The main contributor to most diseases and cancers are fats that you eat because they go rancid," says Oz Garcia, Ph.D., who was twice voted the best nutritionist by New York Magazine, "They produce a lot of free-radical damage to the body."

True to a certain degree...KFC Original Recipe if I remember correctly ranks second [only to Red Lobster's Admiril's - All Fried - Feast] in Trans-Fat content of all the foods CSPI tested. Most, if not all commercially fried chicken is loaded with PHOs...and battered in White Flour. But, Chicken fried in Coconut Oil and breaded with Low-carb (PHO-Free - There is a brand of "LC" Cracker Meal sold at Publix and possibly elsewhere that contains PH Soybean Oil) Batter is good. You can use Pork Rinds, Atkins [or other] Corn Muffin Mix, Wheat Gluten, or any other LC Bread Mix (as long as its PHO-Free).

Well you are missing out then! ;)

Beef liver is the worst kind. Lamb liver is much better and foie gras made from chicken or duck liver is great - and since we don't have to worry about the fat ...:) Unfortunately any kind of liver does have some carbs - but you don't need a lot anyway - really good mixed with cream cheese on celery.

Cheers,

Malcolm
