I just registered my Accu-Chek meter and they have a place where they tell you how many carbs you should eat based on your weight a lifestyle. I am 260 lbs and very sedentary. They told me I should eat 390 carbs a day.
If I eat that, I probably be dead by now. I sent an email telling them to stop telling sick people that. I can not believe they do something like that. Let's see what they have to say, if anything at all.

390 Carbs a day is right in line with the ADA's dietary recommendation for diabetics. Not that I agree with it. My dietician is still insisting that as a diabetic I should be having around 70 carbs per day, she is a little more progressive and is slowing coming around to the low carb benefits for diabetics but isn't quite there yet. She has had a hard time arguing her point with me since I have seen significant improvement in my Hba1c as well as significant weight loss. She will get there in time though, I just hope she brings my Dr along with her. :lol:
Excerpt from the ADA website:
On average Americans eat around 40-45% of our calories as carbohydrate. This is a moderate amount of carbohydrate, not high. Currently some controversy about carbohydrates is raging due to a few new diet books. These books encourage a low carbohydrate, high protein and moderate fat intake. These diets are not in synch with the American Diabetes Association nutrition recommendations, which are based on years of research and clinical experience. In addition, these trendy diets are hard to follow year after year.

On the same ADA page;
http://www.diabetes.org/nutrition-and-recipes/nutrition/starches.jsp
It used to say (until recently);
"The message today: Eat more starches! It is healthiest for everyone to eat more whole grains, beans, and starchy vegetables such as peas, corn, potatoes and winter squash. Starches are good for you because they have very little fat, saturated fat, or cholesterol. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Yes, foods with carbohydrate -- starches, vegetables, fruits, and dairy products -- will raise your blood glucose more quickly than meats and fats, but they are the healthiest foods for you. Your doctor may need to adjust your medications when you eat more carbohydrates."
But now it says;

I guess they would say this is progress! :lol:

Do what you KNOW is best for your body. It just seems that in most cases, it isn't always prudent to follow blindly along what others think we should do. Good luck with your weight loss and good health!

Oh my goodness. How long will it take them to get it. Walk around with a glucose meter for a day and you will see how much carbs reek havoc on your system. Being diabetic, the numbers remind me on a daily basis.

when I went to the Dietician for diabetes ...she told me to be on 45 carbs per meal and 15 for night time snack.....I am not on a diet for weight just for diabetes.......I take no meds as i have time to improve my readings with diet. I was having a hard time with my pasta withdrawals......but am doing better.....I did find that when I ate my one cup of pasta and half cup of sauce I did test high in bS testing.....

Hi Pumba,
You may already know this, but recent studies indicate that type II diabetes is a disease of carb-intolerance, so cutting out past/bread/white rice/etc., is one of the best things you can do for your health. ;)
