I've been kicking around this forum for a couple of days now and thought it's time to introduce myself. Back in 1987, I weighed 260 lbs and then went on a lowfat diet consuming about 800 cals a day. It took a year, but I lost 100 lbs and was starving each and every day. Then I got married and over the past 17 yrs managed to climb back to 325 lbs. I went to my doctor last Feb and he said if I didn't lose weight that I would die of a heart attack and then sent me to Weight Watchers. I couldn't bring myself to go back on that low fat thing again so I secretly started doing Atkins. No one knew except me and my wife. I started losing weight and my doctor now thinks he is a genius. I still attend WW cause I need some support even though I hate their diet (they think they are geniuses too cause I lose more weight than any of them). It is good that I found this forum because I need all the support I can get. I suppose soon I'm going to have to come out of the closet, but I'm afraid that people are going to start throwing stones at me. Well, so be it.

Welcome :)

I know what you mean with the ww thing. Before I found this board I was tempted to go. Just to weigh in every week and have people shower me with attention for losing weight, yet do atkins... hehehe.

Congratulations on getting started and your solid progress. You are doing great! I hear you about the support, but I find this forum offers a whole lot of support without having to leave my home. Kind of a "we're all in it together" sort of thing. As far as hiding the fact that you are on Atkins, yep, people will not understand and think you are slowly killing yourself with protein. But your obvious success could also very well make believers out of all of them. So I say jump out of the closet and ignore the naysayers. And keep up the good work!

Hi Friend

I never met a Kevin that I didn't like! No kidding!

Glad that you are here and enjoying success with your eating plan. Around here there are plenty of people who have shown that they can change their weight, cholesterol levels, bla bla bla...quite well while following Atkins. I hope that you are on the road to better health and can do it this time without being starving. Good Luck!

Welcome, Kevin! You've made excellent progress so far and should be very proud of yourself. You have nothing to hide - you've chosen a program that works for YOU, something YOU can live with. Any stones other people might throw will crumble since you've educated yourself, worked hard, and found success.

I'm glad you've found us and wish you nothing but success on your journey! Do think about starting a journal - you'll find it to be a source of strength.

Edited to add: TELL YOUR DOCTOR. You know what you're doing is working, and only by us letting the medical professionals know about the benefits of this WOL will it become more accepted. If he balks at you and tells you it's unhealthy, ask him if you were healthier at 325. Ask him to do some labwork and compare then to now. Trust me when I tell you, that's one hella satisfying feeling.

Whoa, now you've got me thinking...I wonder how many of their model clients that they use in ads actually did that?

Kevin,

It is great to have you here. I know how you feel about keeping it secret. Only my husband knows that I have been on Atkins. When I tell my friends they have such derogitory comments. But here I have all the support I need. I did find that joining in a couple of challenges such as the water challenge gave me something to look forward to posting success in. Plus my gym journal gives me such an uplifting feeling to come and post my success. The journal is a source of great strength. People stop by and give you lots and lots of support. Enjoy your time with us. Debby

oh Kevin heheheh It is so nice to have you here.. i am just ROLLING over the thing you're doing to WW heheheh. personally, i would stick with us here and keep doing what is so very obviously working for you and when you hit the 200 at WW... THEN tell them you never used thier diet for a single day hehehhe
of course, i am just evil sometimes :)

bUT YES now that things are in progress and youre losing, you should tell your Dr. Why would he recommend it to anyone else who is in your position unless he has seen personal proof (you) THAT IT WORKS??

Again, happy to have you here. Cant wait to post in your journal!

Welcome back Kevin and WTG on your progress so far. Atkins can fit into the guidelines of your 'points' I think, so just let them know about all the veggies you are eating and how WW can be done LC. You don't even have to say Atkins. You may help some of the others there by educating them about what is working for you. Does WW require you to eat bread, pasta, sugar, etc. to be on their plan? If not, you can very legitimately share what you are doing and hold your head very high! I think it is often the word "atkins" that turns the switch of jugdement on. Explain what you are eating to your Doc and your friends at without that word and you should receive more support, less criticism...Good Luck.
