I love indian food but have become a bit bored with chicken tikka! Anyone got any ideas on what's best for an Atkins lowcarber to eat?! I don't like lamb, or meat off the bone like wings/ legs, or very hot-spicy food. Apart from that I'm easy!!! :D
I had an indian meal just now- bhuna prawns- & it was lovely! It had tomatoes in it, but apart from that I think I was ok- anyone know for sure?
I thought this kind of question must come up all the time, but I can't seem to find any mention of it. I think they must not really eat indian food in the states, as I've looked in a carb counter (a book by Pelzer I think?) & there was no mention.
Thanks in advance!!

we eat a lot of curry (vancouver has a very large indian population) & i still make it all the time. i have cut down on the amount of onions i used to use - i now try to limit it to one small/med onion for the whole curry, whereas before it was at least 2 large. i have also cut back on the amount of tomato i add. i used karen barnaby's idea of shredding raw cauliflower & sauteeing/steaming it to have something rice-like to eat with the curry.
i cook from my head, but you should check out karen's recipe section - i made the beef kheema about a week ago & it was wonderful! i served it on the riced cauliflower. she also has a spinach with garam masala dish posted.

Hi Daisy
Prawn bhuna would have all the normal spices and probably a fair amount of onion, tomato and possibly even some sugar (some restaurants do use it).
As Engineergirl has said provided the tomatoes and onions are limited most Indian food is fine - not with rice or naan bread of course.
I usually have curried whatever with plain steamed cauliflour or broccoli. Works fine for me.
Take care.

Thanks for the information! I normally do cook for myself- there's recipie for prawn curry somewhere on that site, and also one for chicken curry in the Atkins book- but sometimes I get lazy! ;)
I've been cooking a lot for my boyfriend too, who is also on the Atkins plan & I think if he ever proposes it'll be thanks to Karen & her faux mashed potatoes! The beef kheema does sound nice, though...!
Any more help with takeaway/ restaurant food would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Daisy
I am new to low carb diets (day before yesterday!) and was searching the forum for information on Indian food (as we are going out tonight with some friends and I dont know what I can eat!) Did you manage to find out the carb content of the usual British "curry night out" food?
Thanks!
Fleur

Indian food is my weakness too, and although i try to stick to making my own sauces so i know what's in them, every couple of weeks i use Shere Khan Cooking Sauces - i buy mine from Sainsburys...they have many different types (eg. tikka masala, rogan josh, korma)....just fry up some chicken/veg and add the sauce ..... the sauce is about 3.9g carbs per 100g and i usually use 150g. Try on a bed of salad. Yum :daze:
