Hi all u wonderful L/C-ing peeps,
Have a few questions about under and over active thyroids.
I read bits and bobs about the symptoms and my mother has just been diagnosed with and underactive thyroid. I am becoming increasingly worried that I should go get the doc to check me out as i have alot of the symptoms which seem to point towards a funky thyroid (cold alot of the time, zapped of energy, hard stools, oh yeah and I'm carrying and extra stone even though I love my l/c veggies and try to exercise 3 times a week). I did have an eating disorder two years back and since then it has been hard to shift any weight atall, it used to fall off me!
What do I say to my doc to get it checked, surely he's just gonna say eat more veg and run more. And also does it mean a blood test, I am a bit needle phobic, I have to buy the patches and gel to numb me and even then i sweat and feel sick- such a lameo!
Anyways, I'd really appreciate some feedback on how u think I should go about it, or some websites that could help me determine wether I am just in denyal and am becoming lazy now I have hit 20- is it old age making me hang on to my extra 14lbs?

Yes, a thyroid test is a blood test, but it is highly inconclusive. Indeed you could be having thyroid problems. Many thyroid problems do come from an inability to absorb magnesium in your distal small intestine, as well as from diminished hormone receptor sites due to intestinal wall erosion. With your having said that you're suffering from hard, shrunken BMs, I'm guessing this is part of the problem.

So I ask you this -- what are your most favorite food? Top five? What would you always have if you could? Including beverages and condiments...

Edited for typo!

There's a thyroid section in this message forum. We've compiled a FAQ that can get you started on info about hypothyroid (link in my siggy) and what sort of tests to get. It can be tricky to get a good diagnosis and treatment. But if you read up on it, you are halfway there.

You definately need the blood work done to get a clear idea here. In the FAQ there's a list of the "right" tests, not the ones doctors usually order. And there's a HUGE difference between "normal" and optimal lab results. I had "normal" TSH, but the rest of my labs showed hypoT.

If you're really afraid of the needles as the person drawing your blood to use a butterfly needle. It's tiny, they use them on babies, and it's pretty painless.
