Anybody else out there a recovering alcoholic and trying to lose weight by doing a LC program? I am...and would love to have some folks to post with who are doing both 'one day at a time.' I'm finding lc'ing a challenge, but am applying the program principles to my ongoing weight-loss. Yet, dieting (for the 1st time in 16 years) is definitely 'kicking up' a lot of my 'old' stuff...Peace to everyone! ;)

Not sure I qualify as recovering alcoholic but I wanted to let you know that you are not in this alone.

Lots of us here are addicts of one kind or another.

I wish you the best success possible!!!

hi wyodiva
i am reluctant to call myself an alcoholic, but....i have recently quit drinking, 9 days to be exact. its incredibly difficult, but i realized i was getting out of hand, and it was sabotaging my weight loss efforts. how long have you been off it? i hear it is definitely something that will come back to haunt you from time to time, but like you said...one day at a time. feel free to stop by my journal if you want to chat sometime. very nice to meet ya

Nope no alcoholism here, except for a long-ago narcotics addiction and an eating disorder addiction, so I think between the two of us, we’ve got all of them covered ;)

Sorry, humor helps keep me from losing my mind sometimes.

I definitely found out that this WOE is bringing up old demons for me that I thought were gone- I’m fighting to make myself eat (my anorexia is rearing its head) and I keep looking for something to “sooth” me now that food is gone…

It’s work, let me tell you, and I don’t have any answers, other than we’re in it together.

Hello WyoDiva

I am trying to kick my wine habit and finding it much harder than I thought it would be. I quit about 5 years ago and lost 60 lbs. Sadly I am at it again. My drinking definitly stalls any weightloss for me, so its got to go.

I am taking L-glutamine and L-tyrosine to help with the cravings and dopamine shortage, and they really help me. Also an occasional 5HTP capsule at bedtime to stimulate seratonin levels, to stop me getting totally depressed by life.

Best of luck in your efforts

Vitamin D also helps with alcohol cravings.

Thanks for that link, Ginga.
One other supplement I forgot to mention is Molybdenum with Pantethine. They enable the body to get rid of alcohol metabolites, so helping the de-tox process. More about it here:

Have you ever read the book "Sugar Blues"...I absolutely love it...there is so much to learn about alcholism and sugar addiction..
I have to say...I'm not a alcoholic...but I do love wine ..and the such...and sugar even more!
(My grandmother and aunt BOTH drank way way too much in there time so its definetly on my mind that I need to be careful)..
I read that Low Carbing was the best way to help rid your body of addiction of sugar and alcohol addictions!
How long have you been low carbing ?
Its definetly a challenge...at least for me...as I do have to work with my sugar addictions (which sometimes leads to sugar binges!) sigh...

I'm not an alcoholic, but my father, aunt, grandfather and grandmother (on the other side) all were. I have spent long periods of my adult life too fit and healthy to consider drinking, but in the last few years started to develop the habit of a few drinks a week, which grew....
So a few weeks ago after polishing off 10 drinks in one afternoon on my own, I decided that this habit had grown far enough - and I stopped. I know that alcoholism can be genetic, and I figure mine suck in that regard, so better to be safe than sorry.
I'm now up to day 16, my boyfriend is trying too - but slipped up after 7 days. It isn't making any difference to my weight yet, but it's about more than that - isn't it!
