Okay...so last night as i was sitting in my car waiting for bf to come out of the store....i was eating a Klondike bar....(it was a cheat day)...and i started thinking about the things i miss about the way i used to eat.....
> The first bite of dessert tastes good....i hate how you have to "get used to the taste" of the sugar alcohals...whereas biting into a regular icecream sandwich just tastes good...period.
Okay Okay...so i was just feeling sorry for myself...lol...but i just got thinking about things....and man does it suck knowing that alot of the sugar free chocolates and stuff aren't really going to taste like chocolate....

Sometimes I miss popcorn but I figure I will have some soon enough and in the meantime I'm enjoying all the new things I'm finding I can have--and feel good eating it!

Popcorn used to be my favorite snack. I miss it too, but I think it only has 5g of carb per one cup popped (can't remember where I read that) so if you can control yourself you could probably have some for special times. My kids and I have 'movie night' once a month, in a couple of months I'll probably start popping myself two cups, covered in melted butter and a dash of salt for a special treat. Mmmmm can't wait! I also miss chocolate bars but missing them less and less everyday.

That is what I'm planning on doing--just pop a bag for DH and taking out about a cup--better than having to sit there and smell it while he's eating it. I'm not much of a sweet person (probably more like vinegar!!) so I don't miss the sweets. I got over that back in the 70s when Atkins first came out. After not having sweets for a while I walked past a bakery and eww what a nasty smell.
Samantha22
Mon, Jul-04-05, 18:35
Man i wish the bakery smell was gross...lol...i crave sweets no matter what..its the pasta and breads that i dont much miss

Mon, Jul-04-05, 19:02
to samantha: not sure how long you've been LC'ing, but the bakery sure smells overpowering to me....... yucky.
also - to me, the first bite of a treat (not LC) is usually the let down- after being off sugar, it tastes not NEARLY as good as i remember.............
maybe your cheat days keep you used to the taste of sugar (just an idea) and so you never get over the acquired taste of it........

Icecream sandwich? You serious? Lol. Why would you put it in bread, wouldn't it melt? I've never heard of it! hehehe

I don't miss bread/potatoes/pasta but still miss my sweets. Today it's super hot out and ice cream was really on my mind. Withstood the craving and went for a long walk away from the stores :D Started chromium today and am taking one in the a.m. and one in the p.m. Hopefully this will slow down my sweet cravings.

i miss potato chips. crisps, i think is the term in the uk and oz. there just is no lc substitute for them. pork rinds just don't have the right texture. i came to work tonight with my little lunch box packed with my lc lunch and snacks all measured and weighted out. and there on the table was a bag of lays, the thin kind, all that was left over from the day shift holiday potluck. and before i knew it, i ate a handful, and then knowing full well what i was doing i ate another handful...and it was good. crunchy and salty, oh god i miss chips!
but i think the larger picture might be the loss of freedom. spontaneous eating, just picking up something and putting it in my mouth just because i want it is a thing of the past. before i can eat anything now i have to figure out how many carbs it has, how many carbs i have left for the day. how many calories (cuz unfortunately i have to keep those little buggers under control too). of course, eating like that got me in my current state, but it would be nice not to have to think about it and have another handful of chips. :yum:

Ice cream. Chocolate almond chip, chocolate peppermint, strawberry.... :yum:
I've tried a couple of lc ice creams, but NONE compare to my favorite...Friendly's!!!!! Any really good, really rich ice cream...or frozen custard....I love ice cream! :yum:
(Luckily here in NC there are no Friendly's....I went thru withdrawal for that 8 yrs ago when I moved here. )

For me its not really the sweets I love LC ice cream for that as a treat sometimes. I miss potatoes and potatoe things like chips, ALOT. I also really really miss breads. I have had the LC bread and its nice to have it sometimes but I really miss garlic texas toast, its the thick sliced kind. I find that those are the things that are getting to me. That and Long John Slivers mmmmmm I love their fish and chicken but I am postive the coating they use isnt Atkin's friendly.

I do not really miss anything that I used to have before except when I am depressed and then a Blizzard sounds wonderful....especially the new Key Lime flavor. As for Potato chips...someone told me that if you nuke some cheese it makes chips...I thought it would be a bust but...I took 1 oz of cheddar and cut it into 16 pieces...I then nuked it for 2 minutes...seems a lot but it works...let cool and they are crisp...I tossed them with a little salt and wow they hit the spot.

"but i think the larger picture might be the loss of freedom. spontaneous eating, just picking up something and putting it in my mouth just because i want it is a thing of the past."
For me being addicted to carbs and not being able to stop was not freedom, it was like a prison sentence, I had no freedom to stop.
Now that I've been on lc for 1 week and having fewer and fewer cravings and just being able to enjoy my day, my family and life without constantly thinking and craving food is such great feeling. I don't really care if I lose another pound, just feeling so free is worth all the chocolate in the world.
I LOVE LC!!!

Oh I miss the chocolate and chocolate and chocolate. :yum: I just love chocolate cakes :yum: and chocolate icecream and shakes. I am a chocolate girl but anyway with the LC at least I can survive on the sugar free chocolates. So just surviving to be a better me. :agree: I also like the French fries and crisps very much :yum: but not missing that so much. I just take it in this manner saying that I have had all my favorites for so long now, and now I should avoid :nono: everything and quit all those things which is spoiling me. So that's what is making me hang in there. :agree:

I think you hit it on the head-the loss of freedom is painful, being able to eat whatever, whenever, not having to cook and pack food-but just think of the freedom you have when you can fit into more of your clothes, when you can walk a mile and not pass out, when people finally start to look at you as though youre a person and not a worthless freak.
Now, thats freedom. (typed while munching a handful of macadamias, since I havent eaten since 6 am and Im not hungry, but I know I need SOMETHING)
Oh yah, and did I mention the never hungry thing? Tht is downright LIBERATING!!!

I had this happen to me on the Fourth. I had decided to have a "cheat break" and eat whatever desserts and potato salad I wanted. I also decided to add a carton of Milk Duds to my "allowed cheats," since I had been craving them like crazy. Well, the day came and I popped a couple of my beloved Milk Duds in my mouth . . . only to discover that they tasted absolutely horrible. It was so weird, but I almost spit them out. And this was after less than a month of LCing again!
The rest of my cheat was fine though. Cheesecake tasted good, potato salad was delicious, and the bag of caramels kept calling my name. But when the night was over, I stopped gorging myself and resolved to get on track the next day. And you know what? It was easy to do. Plus, the memory of the revolting taste of those Milk Duds is making it easy to stay on track. It's only been three days, but I don't feel even slightly tempted to cheat, even though I've spent the past week or two dreaming about chocolate and replacing it with way too many sugar alcohol-laded treats.
But yeah, there's a part of me that still misses Cold Stone Creamery ice cream.

I had the same experience S, I dreamed and dreamed about having something sweet and when I finally had it, it was no big deal. Since I started CAD 2 weeks ago I've been having a bit of dessert with my reward meal because I was used to eating dessert everyday before starting LC and I was sure I couldn't do without.
Last night I ate my RM and didn't even think about dessert, I had a little desire when I gave my kids some ice cream with chocolate chips (one of my fav desserts) but the desire was not overpowering, I just left the room and let them finish their dessert. It didn't hit me til later that 3 weeks ago I would not have been able to just walk away.
Hopefully, you'll remember the milk duds (love those) experience and it will help you to stay on track.
I bet if you had a little Cold Stone Creamery ice cream it probably wouldn't give you the same satisfaction as it did before.
Keep up the good work!

I miss bread more than any other food. White bread. Especially spaghetti sandwiches, slathered with margarine. And any sort of breaded, fried food, whether it's deep-fried chicken, pan-fried fish, or appetizers like mozzarella sticks and jalapeno poppers.
I also miss corn tortillas, beans (re-fried or chili), snowcones, ice cream, potatoes, good BBQ, cigarettes, and corn on the cob. But the thing I miss most of all is dining out with my family. Food no longer has a workable social aspect, for me, and that actually makes me kind of sad.

Soft fresh white bread...or a fresh cresant....I used to live on bread....There are so many low carb sweets that you can use as occasional treats I am ok with that. Dream Fields pasta helps replace the potatos and regular pasta. But low carb breads just don't taste good to me. Low carb tortillas help and low carb pancakes are the bomb. But nothing quite replaces good old white bread!!! God I miss it!

Cheat days? :q:
Cheating will only slow ya down, and wreak havoc on you blood chemistry and overall health IMHO. I speak from self as I am prone to cheat, or nibble just one. I do know how you feel as I used to do the same thing all my life. I felt the same way once, for a long time. What I have found with LCing especially is by cheating you are prolonging your success and diminishing immediate results.
I for one am glad a lot of the LC desserts and snackie treats tase like crap. It weans ya off em pretty fast.
And if you want a way to get off the ice cream bars, read the label. There is enough trans fats sugar and crap in there to kill a horse!
I don't mean to come at you, but I feel, again IMHO, that modding this lifestyle is a huge recipie for disaster. On again off again on any WOE is dangerous and unhealthy.
I do wish you luck and continued success towards your goals!

Cheer up! I don't miss that big number on the scale, I don't miss the clothes that are now too big. No food tastes so good as the feeling that I get when I look in the mirror at the 13 pounds that are gone! It is just food. We eat it to survive. Their are so many other of life's pleasures to enjoy.

Monday the 12th was my birthday so after 6 months of being good I had a full on cheat day. I had enough bread to choke a horse and potatoes and chinese food and a piece of double chocolate cake. I gained 6 lbs in one day!!! Oh my God! I did not think it was physically possible to gain 6 lbs in one day! It defenatly reinforced that I can never go back to the old way of eating. It is going to take me a month and a half to take off what I put on in just one day. It was a good day but soooo not worth 6 lbs.

I don't think it's possible to put on 6lbs in one day either. A lot of it would b water retention but some of it will be genuine weight you will need to work at to remove again. Did you get headaches or anything? I get headaches if I have something very sugary (like you choccy cake) after being strict lc for a few weeks.

I miss being able to watch the Foodnetwork and making all the yummy treats that Emril, Giada, Rachel, the Barefoot Contessa, and the others would make. I think it is just the variety in general that I miss. I know that their are a lot of choices with LCing, but it is just not the same.
...Even so, my stomach and body are much happier this way...and that's what I have to remember!

I am not at goal yet, but when I am, I am going to miss my big ole butt bumping into people when I try to squeeze by them in public!
Seriously, I will not miss any of the foods that put my big ole butt there in the first place. They are like a lousy friend. They entice you to keep spending time with them and they only cause trouble while they are around. When I look at what I did to myself, it makes me sick. It is like looking back at me when I was a drug addict or something. I am not saying I never cheat or that I am harsh on others who have reward days, but for me, it feels like I am an alcoholic in a closet taking a drink.
Take a look at my stats below. I have had my quota of unhealthy food.

Surprisingly no, I did not get sick in any way....I fully expected to. I have only lost 2 of the 6 lbs since the 12th so I don't think it was water gain since it has been 2 weeks....I have had really bad constipation every since though. Worse than I have ever had before.

Well I watch the food network all the time. I love to watch the challanges, Iron chef, Rachel, Paula and I try to catch low carb and loving it and the calorie commando when I am home and they are on. Sometimes once in a while a show makes me hungry and if so I change the channel but for the most part it doesn't bother me. I would miss the food network as well if it bothered me more often.
I have 4 low carb cookbooks and I use this site as well as another for recipes. So I do my best to keep it interesting and to try new things. Some are not so good and some are great... it is fun. I think that helps me from missing the variety to try new recipies.
As for missing the bake goods, there a some recipies here as well as on other sites for some things. Shoot I even found a low carb pecan pie recipe for my Dad for Christmas I am going to make him. (We are diabetics so this way of eating is wonderful for us.)

As far as LC cookbooks, I just recently ordered a few (George Stella, Karen's, Dana Carpender (2), and Fran McCullough. Some of Fran's recipes call for flour, sugar, and corn meal!
That is typical, I have a Low carb cookbook my sister bought for me that has items full of honey, sugars flours and the like. Then there are many of the processed low carb foods that have hydrogenated oils and enough preservatives to cure an elephant.
Just like witjh processed foods, you have to read the ingredients and do what makes sense for you. Also, some recipies with a wee bit of flour etc.. may not be so bad as a once in a while endulgance and these same recipes may have a single serving carb count that falls into a low carb maintenance type program.
The funny thing about the term low carb, it depends on who is defining it.
A recipe that would be 47 carbs per serving the traditional way, and 5 carbs the Low carb way is one we all would generally accept as a true low carb recipe.
Some cook book writer types would call the same dish with a carb rating of 22 versus the original 47, a low carb dish. True it is lower in carbs, but then that is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it?

I really like the low carb cookbooks by Dana Carpender, i have even found some at half price books for 5$, I have made several things from her book which were very good, some recipes have higher counts for maintance, but I just don't make them and most of the recipes are reasonable in carbs and don't call for too many weird ingredients that I will only use once. She has 500 low carb recipes, 500 more low carb recipes and 15 minute low carb recipes also a BBQ recipe book and I hear a Low Carb Smoothie book, but I don't have these last 2.

Sometimes I miss the pasta a little bit. For me a Spaghetti dinner was two heaping dinner plates full with lots of my killer home made meat sauced well caked with Parm...
Better get off that horse before I start craving it again. :-)
That bit about the icecream sandwich reminded me of the time as a kid that I took a slab of icecream and stuck it between two slices of buttered toast to make my own. It actually tasted pretty good.
Most of what I miss is mostly a mental thing, Like when I remember how much I enjoyed the big - OK huge - bowl of popcorn, but it is so easy to just pass it by right now.

For a time there were more candies available in low carb that just helped for the junk food craving moments. I don't miss bread and I have been able to make most desserts I want in a low carb way and make my family the regular desserts. I miss Dots and Nibs and Crows occasionally. It wasn't that I ever ate them often but they were definitely a wonderful junk food treat. The closest I came to enjoying just a bit of low carb junk food was when Planter's had their low carb bar. I was extemely disappointed when they quit making it. I think that some of the chocolates are darn good in low carb.
