This is my first time trying the Atkins diet and I am really surprised at how fast I'm loosing weight. I've only been doing the diet for two days and I'm already down 3 pounds. I'm just wondering if this is a loss in water weight, or if it really is a rapid weight drop. Here's also another newbie question, do most people tend to put some of the weight back on when they finish with induction?

it's mostly water but depending on how much you lose there could be a good bit of fat in there. No, people don't usually gain weight after induction, however, some do experience a bit of a stall. It doesn't last long (if it happens at all) and shouldn't discourage you. it's normal.
PS. I noticed you've read Atkins for life, you may want to read Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution also. It's more complete.

Thanks. Once in ketosis is that more indicative of fat loss, or is that still water weight loss as well?

I would guess it's a little of both. Ketosis definately means you're metabolizing fat, but initial loss is almost always some water weight unless you've been dieting already.

The best way to tell would be to measure yourself. If you lose inches, you can be sure it's not JUST water weight. I've lost 9lb in 8 days so far, and 2 inches from my waist, so some of it is water but not all.

Dr. Atkins said in DANDR that after about the 4th day everything you lose is fat.

I think it must have been water. I'm back up almost 2 pounds, but still in ketosis so hopefully I'll start dropping again.

OH Yeah! I almost forgot that. By day four your glycogen stores have been depleated so you start to burn your body fat and by then excess water should be gone.

Remember, loss of excess water is still good loss. All of that excess water stresses the kidneys. Releasing that water shows that your body is accepting the new way of eating and it is evidence of your kidneys efficiency. Alot of water is retained during menstruation, so keep that in mind when you think that you are experiencing weight gain. I do not weigh myself during this time ( to depressing ) but I can tell you when my period is about to start, now without the help of a calendar. Please make sure that you are measuring, as this is the true evidence of loss.
