Welcome to the forum. I am in Sacramento and was also looking for some local folks to talk to. 38 yo, I have 2 teenagers. I have been LCing since 9/01 and it is working. Keep up the good work.

Teenagers... How fun is that! One of my three daughters is 15. The house is full of fun
I have had a couple of bad days on the Plan here lately. With the Holidays fast approaching and the eating frenzy starting... I am tempted and succumb. The office "potluck" was a problem. I brought pork rinds to dip with, but the spinach dip was yucky that way. :( Then I had a couple of bites of almost everything. Which added up to about 70 carbs yesterday. OOPS!
I'm going to a senior member to find out how long I have to be on the induction for this mistake....

Staying with it will keep you on the right track. I stay between 20 and 30 carbs a day. Wednesday they had a Turkey dinner at work, I went through the line a had turkey and green beans and took it back to my office and ate it. At pot lucks I bring meat or chicken and take some out first before I put it in the kitchen so that I am garanteed that I have as much as I want.
I just made a low carb pumkin pie and some candy. I can live without it. When I feel like I need something sweet I eat a carbo lite chocolate bar. It has almost 10 carbs for the whole bar but that is still within the limit. I find it easier to stay on the program if I don't try to fit to many extras in. I guess I am on induction most of the time. It should only take a couple days to put you back into Ketosis.
Keep up the good work, one meal at a time.
My daughter is 14 and son 15.

Hello, I hope its just the holiday crunch that has quieted this thread. I'm in the bay area; alameda county and am hoping you don't mind an addition to your thread. I'm not that far away after all!
I am 37 with afew kids of my own and a few rentals as well...grandkids mostly! A well blended family!
7 months, 4yo, 6yo, 8yo and my own youngest so far 13yo. I first started Atkins last year and got a little side tracked after some health problems..unrelated to the plan. Now I'm relosing some of those same pounds and looking for some extra support especially during the holidays.
Hope your Thanksgiving's were wonderful.
Take care and hang in there.

Good Morning Beth,
Welcome! I had a good Thanksgiving and I hope yours was good too. The holidays are coming quickly and I am still trying to figure out how I can fit in See's candy this year. You have a house full so that should keep you busy. My kids have been great support for this WOL. Try to keep warm this weekend. I tis raining like crazy here now.

Hello there! Thanksgiving was super...lots of turkey and veggies!
I was worried the rain might have washed you all away too! Seems like sometimes these threads die fast! I just joined the group a few weeks ago, but I've been LCing for a while. Started last year then had to have female surgery earlier in the yr so I stopped unfortunately...gained back almost 35...I hate re-losing!
It was easier when I was doing water aerobics on a regular basis. I watch my youngest grandbaby full time though now so although I have a gym membership I don't feel comfortable leaving the 8 mo with a stranger. Maybe after the 1st of the year...I think I would just worry about him though.
I've mostly got to get my exercise jump started. The weather has slowed me down a bit.
A thought on the Sees issue...I did try the new Atkins chocolate bar today...chocolate crunch. I think I just smelled it for the longest time! LOL But it's almost that TOM and my sweet cravings need to be satisfied occasionally! It was great! Very chocolately and creamy texture, rich and crunchy with no bad aftertaste. I didn't even eat the whole thing though it is only 2C!
not cheap though at 1.69ea but we know were worth it! What's your fav quick meal?
Bye for now!

Good Morning Beth,
Yes, the rain is attempting to wash us away. I started my ark already. ;)
I have been LCing since September. I to have regained and need to relose and that is a lot of work. I believe with this WOE we can it this time and maintain a healthy WOL. I also have a gym membership at 24hr Fitness. I keep paying the monthly dues even if I don't go because I know one day I will be in there 5 days a week. I can understand not wanting to leave your grandbaby. you will know the right time.
Do you have any tapes at home that you could do? Maybe while he is napping.
Thanks for the tip about See's but I don't know if there is anything is this world that can really replace it :) I too have tried the Atkins bars and others. Some of them are pretty good. I did run them through the hidden card counter and found most of them have hidden carbs, also there has been a ton of threads about them and the false labeling. I eat carbolite chocolate bars. The label says it has a couple carbs but the hidden carb counter says between 9 and 10 so when I eat it I just count them in.I found that if we want it and know the carb count we can fir it into our WOE. The carbolite Chocolate bars are 1.69 at Trader Joe's for the large one and 1.29 at Walgreen's for the small one.
My favorite meal? I don't know if I have one. I am not trying to be funny but I don't really know how to explain it. I eat bacon or sausage or side pork before I go to work. Maybe an egg too. At work I drink decaf coffee with cream.
At lunch sometimes I order pizza and eat the top off and throw the crust away, order Togo's hot pastrami sandwich and eat the inside and throw the bread away. At McDonald's I order double cheeseburger's without ketchup and the cheese between the meat so it doesn't stick to the bread and then throw the bun away. Sometimes I just go to the deli and get some meat and cheese and eat it.
At dinner I eat a steak and green beans. Sometimes I cook other meat, pork is good in the slow cooker. I also work in a restaurant a couple nights a week so I take a bowl and put in lettuce, green beans, a piece or roast and blue cheese dressing and that's my dinner.
Sometimes I make sugar free jello and eat it with reddi whip. I know that has sugar but it doesn't make me crave anything and I just count the carbs in for the day. I made the low carb cheesecake, low carb chocolate balls and pumpkin pie. I didn't care for any of them. My kids wouldn't eat them either and teenage boys usually don't care.
I notice that since I have been eating like this I am not hungry and I don't really need a lot of variety so I just stick to the same old things. I also know if you are cooking for children it is harder because they do like variety. My daughter is 14 so if she doesn't like what I am having, she makes something else or ask me to pick something up at the store on my way home. She likes meat so that is never really a problem.
You asked a question and I wrote a book
Have a good day and stay warm.

Hello Kathy & Beth,
Sorry about my long absence.
I've been quite busy - I had 16-24 people for 5 days over the Thanksgiving holiday - that didn't leave much time for me...
I did indulge in cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving. The day after I had a bit of yams w/ marshmallows, the day after that I made Taco Soup (pretty carby), but was back on track after those days "off". I decided to hold off on the "weigh in" until this last Friday - The scale remained at 210 (thank God).
Yesterday, it was down to 208 - Yipee! I further have decided to let Sunday be the day when I eat a reward meal and not worry about it. I was getting so mad at myself (self destructive) if I was having a "reward" item.
I have all daughters - 15, 11, and 9. They are enjoying the fact that there is more rice and pasta for them. They also enjoy going out to eat so they can see what kinds of crazy things I ask the chef to make....
I am having fun... My husband said again this weekend that he thinks he's getting the short end of the "meal" stick - I get steak and he eats spaghetti with the kids.....
bye now.....

I live in Modesto, not too far from Sacremento, right? I have family in the Sacramento area so I go up there often.
One of my favorite meals I learned from my Aunt (who gave me the book, that started me on this WOL). She served us egg salad with real mayo on low carb bread. Mmm. It is so good and starts the day great. After eating that I'm satisfied til lunchtime.
Well, that's my favorite....unless you are talking about salmon. Now that might be my favorite. With a big fluffy salad and dijon lime dressing.
Someone in here made a low carb pumpkin pie. How did you do that? Was it a cheesecake? Let me know and where you got the recipe.

Thanks for the book Kathy! Welcome Victoria! Hey Mary glad your back! I gotta check those hidden carbs out...I haven't really slowed down too much yet so I wasn't really concerned but I didn't know they could be off that much! YIKES!
I try not to have a LC bar more than a couple times a week. But I confess at times with the hectic schedule of kid p/up times I sometimes grab one instead of the nuts to tide me over.
I think lobster and steak is my fav meal. Followed closely by FRESH Salmon w/ lemon dill and fresh garlic/butter. I'll eat anything green but I crave spinach and am looking for a creamed spinach recipe without flour. They make it at Claim Jumpers in Concord...it is sooooo good but they aren't sharing the recipe! All I know is it has Shallots, Chardonnay and a little milk.
Fast meals would have to be 0 Carb (now I'll have to check) Hot Links from safeway...Showboat Brand w/Mayo and Swiss over misc greens. But then I get a little lazy cookin' at times. George Forman grills a mean anything fast and I'm askin Santa for a bigger one!
Take care all, Oh, Victoria check the recipe section here for the Chiffon pumpin pie recipe, its suppose to be good....have you all tried the Mock Danish....that hits the spot too!

Hi all-just wanted to drop a quick note and say that I found that hidden carb calculator to be truely revealing when it comes to those so called LC bars! YIKES...my fav 2.6 turned out to be 20+ I don't know how they get away with it...something about glycerine and how it doesn't effect Blood sugar!
Tried a treat you may already know about tho...Tyson Chicken wings Chili-lime 4 pcs for 2 carbs freezer section Costco fast snack or dinner...thats all just thought I'd share. I'm looking at the BFI stuff Body For Life and trying to get the supplies together to start by Jan. Nat is doing so well on it I can't really resist. You can check her journal or log if your curious!
Take care and have a super week.

I have the LoCarb recipe at home. I will write it later today!
I haven't tried the lo-carb bread, but want to because my liver pate doesn't taste good on celery or pork rinds!
Glad to see the list growing in this area.
A lo-carb recipe exchange party may be in order next year! Somewhere in the "middle."

Hello!!!!
Mjchyzy---down to 207!!!! That's great. I'm looking forward to hitting that mark...but it'll be a while for me. But I'm down 2 more pounds, so I'm happy too. A pound at a time is fine for me. I'm sure that's how I put it on--a pound at a time. :daze: I'm thrilled that this is working.
A low carb recipe party sounds like fun. I just got a new recipe book from Fran McCullough-A Low-Carb Cookbook. I'm enjoying browsing thru it. She lists protein and carbs at the bottom of the recipe too. I tried a few of them so far, and find the book easy to use. And I got it on half.com for 4 bucks! What a deal!!!
Wow! Those hidden carbs are alarming. Here you think you're doing a good thing and they sabotage it by not being completely honest about the carb count. How do you check for the hidden carbs? I know I've read it somewhere around here, but can't remember where.
Well, bye for now. Victoria

Great news on the 207!! I'm hoping for a whoosh of any size by the EOW! The carb calc is a linc located to the right .....of this page last in a line of links on the front page also...check it out it is amazing!
I got the same LC Book ... Fran is great!
I found a spinach recipe too thanks I'd like to see if its different than yours though! I can't eat too much spinach! I don't know If I mentioned it but FlaxOMeal Butter Pecan is my fav cereal...I miss a hot cereal when it's cold outside...I have but haven't yet tried the Vanilla Almond (i think) Didn't want to have two pkgs open at one time. There are other breads supposed LC out there I haven't tried any but Atkins yet...remember to subtract the fiber though for you Carb count!
A recipe party ... good idea...in the mean time though I'd love to hear whats working for you all! Keep those fresh ideas coming!

4 Servings
1 Tbs extra virgin olive oil
1 lg clove garlic, minced
1 lb prewashed spinach
1/2 c whipping cream
1/2 t coarse salt
1/4 t freshly ground pepper
Heat a large skillet over high heat for 1 minute. Add the olive oil and garlic and swirl the pan to coat the bottom evenly with the oil. Add the spinach and stir-fry for 1 to 2 minutes or until the spinach begins to wilt. Transfer the spinach to a towel and roll up the towel to blot up the excess moisture. Coarsley chop the spinach if desired.
Heat the whipping cream in the same skillet over high heat for 2 minutes or until it begins to thicken. Add the spinach and blend well. Season with salt and pepper. Cook until heated through, stirring frequently. Serve immediately.
Each serving provides:
5g carbohydrates, 161 calories, 4g protein, 15 g fat, 3g dietary fiber, 219 mg solium, 41 mg cholesterol
This was good but not the kind at the local resturant! Please share your recipe too!! I love creamed spinach! This cookbook has a great section on vegies - my life would end without vegies! Please forward more information on the bread type items.
Lastly, I blew it last night because we went to a resturant and I ordered shrimp scampi - they didn't mention it was served over pasta and I ended up eating 7 mouthfulls :-(
Oh well--- better ordering next time!

I will post the other recipe when I have it close at hand! I can't remember which site I got it from. The bread I've tried is from the Atkins site...it comes in white and Rye. It's kind of pricey but it comes frozen so I just make it last...its not a daily treat anyway. There both good, they have a bit of a soy taste but I'm not adverse to that...I like it just with butter or PB.
They also have bagels for later in maintenance...I think they are 6C per 1/2 which is high but still much less than regular. There are others I just have no personal knowledge of them yet...I just ordered a cinnamon swirl LC I'll let you know the verdict when it arrives.
I had a restaurant nightmare last night too! I ordered chicken soup and had to dissect the carrots, potatoes and onions out of it. I'm hoping I didn't get too much starch we'll see later though. I am really trying to push the water I almost made 6 ltrs yesterday and should have been pd by the mile for my trips! They say your body adjusts pretty fast though, we'll see!

I enjoyed the holidays (too much)! I didn't berate myself for my food choices over the last few weeks. I did put a two pounds back on, but I am okay with that today.
I am back on the induction to even myself out. Fun, fun, fun.
Ham and swiss cheese melt for lunch. Celery and cream cheese snacks. I am craving the chocolate, but told the family to remove all the chocolate from the house... the holidays are OVER.
Send new recipes my way! New sauces for the old favorites - chicken, beef, and pork.

Hey Ladies!
I'm A LOT further up north in Eureka...Humboldt county, but I'm a bay area native originally from Oakland!
I have been LC for a few months now and I would love to have a few people that can kind of serve as a close nit support group...Yeah, I know the whole site is built for this but I would love some more personal contacts, you know?
Also, I'm a larger sized woman and would really benefit from anyone who is trying to lose a significant amount of weight and could discuss with me specific size issues that are maybe too personal for a "forum" venue!
Well, I hope you all come back soon...your last posts were from December it looks like.
I'll be here waiting for ya!

I'm a little closer to San Francisco however you are still in the neighborhood!
Welcome aboard...I started out not to far from your wt...My highest recorded was a little lower...but lets be honest I stopped recording at a certain point and it wasn't at my highest! I have been LCing for a little over a year... am in the process of switching plans and adding a 12 week exercise challenge called BFL...you will see other threads on this in the forum too...It's about much more than exercise though.
There is a triple diget forum also and if you haven't started one I highly recommend a journal. Record your daily food and your thoughts or questions and there are many who check for people needing assistance there too...very helpful for myself anyway.
I had female surgery last year and after just couldn't find the support to keep on...I put 35 back on in about 6 months and that was finally it for me...I didn't care what everyone was telling me that was negative about my plan I just wanted to feel good again and on LC I do...I have never felt in control of food until LC...before that the food I felt controlled me. I am moving in a positve direction and am having to handle the other emotions that go with losing weight...for me fear, of failure and some fear of unwanted attention. One thing and one day...sometimes one meal at a time..depends on the day...
Welcome again and Hi to all you Californians that read this thread!
Beth
P.S. Your picture is gorgeous! Do many tell you that you look like Halle Berry?
Victoria
Mon, Jan-14-02, 16:44
Hi people,
How are you all doing? Welcome Tesia, what a pretty name. I just got good news. I weighed at the doctors and am almost 10 pounds lighter than my scale is telling me. That was encouraging.
Still don't know weither to change my stats according to the doctor's scale or stay with mine.
I tried making some peanut butter cookies (LC) and they were pretty bad. I think it was the soy flour. I hadn't ever used soy flour before, but it's a pretty strong taste. I still ate two, but I know I won't be "binging" on them. I froze them, for whenever I need something and don't have anything in the house. Then I think I might eat them. But only if there's nothing else.
So, hope you all made it thru the holidays OK. And I hope you all can forgive yourselves if you splurged a little. Every day is another day. A new opportunity to start over. Can you tell I'm in a good mood? The scale thing really made me HAPPY! :hyper: Well, now this year, now that I'm getting smaller...I want to start exercising and getting in better shape. My main goal is to be able to walk at least 30 minutes 4 or 5 days a week. Sounds easy, but just getting out to do it is a struggle. But now that I've figured out how to get the weight going in the right direction, the next step is to get more active. Well, see you all around...Victoria

Hey thanks for the warm welcome and the lovely compliments!! Wow I Like this place already. BTW, NO no one has ever told me that I look like Halle in that picture so Thank YOU for saying that! I think she is gorgeous and even if one person can see a similarity I'm in Heaven! :D
Congratulations, Victoria on your Surprise!!! That is wonderful. If I were you I would keep your stats using the scale you have at home since that's the one you will probably be using the most. Then you can just keep in the back of your mind the fact that you are actually lighter than that. What a great attitude you have!
Yeah, I was pretty forgiving of myself for the holidays. I just figure it makes no sense to beat myself up cuz then I'll start to feel guilty/bad and that sends me into a whole downward spiral type thing which is never good! That only makes for more cheating!
Speaking of exercise! I'm signing up for a belly dancing class around the corner from my house!!! I'm sooooooo Excited!!! I know I'll be the biggest one in the class but hey! More to shake!!! I also just put my bike in the shop for a tune up so I'll be riding my bike again AND my aeroboxing class should be starting up pretty soon here. It was the one fitness class that I was able to stick to and do the full hour's worth of work! I loved it!
Even though I've only lost 5 lbs in the past 2 months (bleck) I feel myself back on track again. I really do think that this bellydancing class will make a huge difference. I've noticed that when I have a regular exercise program I am hungry waaaay less. There were times when I was in aeroboxing that i would come home and eat 1 egg and a piece of LC bread and that would be enough for me for dinner.
Alright I'll end this novel, but before I do...can anyone tell me how having a journal has helped them? Everyone has been suggesting that I start one but I'm not sure what I would put in it or the purpose it would serve for me. I kinda like sharing with other folks vs. just writing with no feedback, you know?
OK!

Hi Victoria, Hi Tesia,
A journal...my journal is a place to start my time on the forum. Its where my pals come to visit me and leave me encouraging notes, it's where I post my food, qtys and totals and supplements, water...quite literally everything that goes in my mouth...when I am being detail oriented that is. It is also a place where some new and some senior members can give you tips on other ideas or stall problems or menu problems/ideas too. Your thoughts or feelings...check out bluviolets she has some keeper thoughts in hers. A place to share whatever you want to, knowing that maybe someone else can benefit from your journey too. There is also a GYM journal to record your workout time, but you can keep it in one if you like. Check out mine and Victoria's and others too, you'll quickly see what I mean.
Belly dancing sounds great...You will really use some muscles doing that and have lotsa' fun too! I used water aerobics especially in the beginning for ease of movement and ease on my aching knees and ankles too.
Have a super evening ladies I am off to take the youngest to Boy Scouts...

I don't have too much time any more for computer activities... my husband was a victim of the layoff frenzy last year and is still looking for a job. I ended up taking a part-time second job and he is also working part time for a retailer while using the days job hunting. Needless to say, I'm not doing too well on the high-cost LC diet. I'm supplementing with "stretch" foods like pasta and potatoes. :-( I've not gained anything, but have stayed steady at 206-208 lbs.
I still am consumming meat, eggs, and the like, but the meat only meals are pretty much a gonner due to cost. If there are any ideas out there, let me know. I'm buying bulk ground beef and stocking up on chickn legs when they are on sale. I don't know how to cut up a chicken, so haven't bought more of those since I butchered the last one.
I am taking my vitamins and working on life right now.
Anyone looking for an "over qualified" hard worker that needs to make $18 hr in the Sacramento area - he has 25+ years in manufacturing as a buyer/production planner!?! We have been homeowners for just less than a year at the time of the lay off. I won't lose my house, but the cars.... ?!
Anyway, chin up to me.. I love my second job at Blockbuster :-) The customers are great and the energy level is high. My butt will get more firm with all the active work I do and squatting to the bottom shelves :-)
Still hoping for an LC recipe party somewhere between us all later this year...

Hi Mary,
Sorry to hear of your husband's lay off. That must be nerve racking. My husband works two jobs--almost 70 hours a week to make ends meet. So I know what it is to struggle. Hope he finds the perfect job soon.
You know I buy whole chickens and wash them real good and then just roast them like a turkey (covering them with a layer of butter and seasoning) or I stick the whole thing in my crockpot and squeeze a lemon and season and a little water or wine, and it's good to go. You don't have to know how to cut them up this way. ;)
Hope everything works out for you. Victoria

Thank you all so much for your writings and your thoughts. I have no new news on the job front for my man, but my health and general state of happiness remains.
My diet is in the whole!!! I am hoping for two days off in a row so that I can prep some LC meals for me to freeze.
Any freeze ahead ideas? If I could just have easy to grab items that I can bring with me for all meals BLD... (I get up at 6:15 a.m. and take kids to school at 7:30 a.m., go to job #1, change in the bathroom and go to job #2 - get home at 1:15 a.m. or so....)
I want to hear someone say that so long as I do LC as much and as often as possible, that is better than the alternative (which is reckless abandon!)!!!
I have put 4 pounds back on and am up to 207. I need to stop gaining and at least stay steady... till I can fully go back to the LC way of life (time and money).

Hi Mary-
Hang in there woman!! I know how hard it can be when you have other things that seem more important or when you have a lot of stress in your life but remember this way of eating is a WAY OF LIFE, that means that you have to try as hard as you can to stick with it no matter what. Remember that this is FOR YOU and your happiness. To feel better about yourself. Ok, enough of that! ;)
A food that has become pretty useful for me and that is fairly cheap is ground beef. I usually season a bunch of it really well and then cook it up and store it. It is useful in any number of dishes that can be quick and easy. You can scramble it in eggs, stirfry it with veggies, add cheese and cream for an (almost) hamburger helper, you can cook it in some cabbage for a different taste, you can add chili powder and put it over iceberg lettuce and add cheese, sourcream and taco sauce for a taco salad. It's extremely versatile!
Hope this helps!!

OK I'm hungry....I think I've touted my wings before but at 17 servings in one 5lb bag...just under $9 is pretty cheap...ITyson Chili lime flavor ~ Costco... add a big salad...giant bag from costco of Fancy mixed greens is...3.99? The reg salad mix is around 1.99 and I've got lunch for the week....for variety I have used boiled eggs...tuna, sardines mixed with generic mayo or sesame oil/olive oil etc as dressing...my fav is BC but I sometimes thin it out to make it last!
Meatloaf...freezes well...top with cheese. Cauliflower mashed with crm cheese.
I try to buy bulk where possible. Hope that helps a little...but Tesia's easy beef really sounds yummy!

I am not working tonight so I am going home to take care of myself and enjoy my fam.
I will not eat Carbs (like potatoes) at dinner :-)

Hang in there...don't give up...just keep trying..or try something different...can you check out PP Lifeplan at the library it has different levels of commitment for different times in your life, but also focuses on getting enough protein to maintain your good health!
Just a thought...sending you well wishes and hopes for a donutless day....I know the smell gets me sometimes as the donut shop is in the same mall as the gym! Hows that for cruel and usual punishment! I just pray for the winds to change and think of worms on them! Hey whatever works, cause I'm not going there now!

I worked so hard, now I'm back up 4 pounds. My pants are not as loose and I'm tired all the time. Man I loved the Atkins diet benefits!
I have stayed on the plan today, and go home to night to preplan some meals. I'll be stopping at the cheap store to pick up more meat.
Thanks for that last email, Beth! That helped lots.

I live in Auburn, born and raised in Belmont.
What stores around here carry LC foods?
Thanks.

Most if not all of the items you will need are available at your local grocer....any safeway or albertsons or Trader Joes will have the whole and real foods you should be using for induction and beyond. As far as specialty stores, health food stores in my area, maybe yours too carry some of the other items like atkins bread in the freezer section and some LC mixes which safeway & GNC also carry. Hope that helps...start a journal here for a great way to get other tips and advice...visit other journals for ideas too.

If the Auburn you are referring to is in Northern California, please try the Raley's at the Forresthill exit of Hwy 80. They have a great section. Same with the Sunshine Natural Foods on Hwy 49 at the Bel Air Market.
Good Luck, glad to know that there are more in my area!
