I went to this new restaraunt in town a little bistro kinda place. Very adorable little restaraunt and some class to this hicksville town.
I knew they specialized in sandwiches and soups etc... so I got myself a salad it sounded wonderful. Spinach leaves, bacon, eggs, walnuts, strawberries and a screwer of shrimp. It was DELISH!!!
It had this hot bacon dressing with it that was unbeleivable.
I get most of the way done and it dawns on me this tastes REALLY sweet. I notice then that the walnuts are coated in sugar and the dressing itself is pretty sweet.
I check my BGs which had been 93 and it says 218 OMG some salad huh?
Now I have blown my sugar AND my diet.
My BGs were back to 160 within 45 minutes and back to 106 by 2 hours which I am glad for but man why did they sneak sugar into my "healthy" salad?
I need to be more careful I suppose. I learned an important lesson about eating out I guess. :yum:

hi there,

that's a really brief spike. I personally would consider this a success for a dinner out. *Rarely* is my bg so good after eating random food at a restaurant! It's always so hard to get the carb count/ insulin ratio correct.
Just remember to always ask about ingredients. I tell them I'm a diabetic so that I don't get some flippant, unconsidered response.

I had a similar salad a couple of days ago. I was so bummed to see that the walnuts were sugar coated. I got the salad at the corner coffee shopp. It was made from scratch and it took forever. I did get full fat ranch dressing so I didn't do too bad. I removed all of the walnuts.

heck you don't have to only worry about eating out..if your a diabetic and you live with a non diabetic..that also can cause your problems..non diabetics love to eat junk food lol..very frustrating to watch them eat away..

You deffinly have to be careful when dinning out! I use to eat at Fresh Choice salad bars until I found out they spray thier salads with sugar/lemon water to keep everything from browning. There is also hidden sugar in some of the soups not just in the ovious muffins and brownies. Some of the chains have websites so you can find out what the carb and calorie count is before you dine. That helps but it takes some of the fun out to have to plan so much before I dine out. I miss being spontanus.

Yep, dining out is hard. If I do eat out I like TGIFridays or Outback. They have nice low carb options.
