I don't know what it's like in your countries, but here in the UK, they are always going on about this or that being bad for you....this is the latest one anounced on the news on TV just now.

"people eating more than 160g of red meat a day are more likely to get bowel cancer"

I just replied on the site; don't know if they'll post my comments.

In the absence of controlled insulin, virtually any dietary information is meaningless, IMO. Too many things happen differently when insulin levels fluctuate.

Even so, it means 17 deaths per 10,000 rather than 12. Eh... a little hard to get nervous about it when you look at the actual ratio.

 Oh me oh my. Another dire warning for meat eaters.

I didn't look at the article yet, but let me guess .... "red meat" is lumped in with processed meats such as bologna and hotdogs/weiners full of nitrates. No doubt the red meat eaters also tended to consume more margarine and snack foods such as chips, crisps, biscuits, cookies and the like, full of trans fats.

Best protection against bowel cancer?? ... Avoid sugar, processed carbs and trans fats. Eat beef, especially grass-fed if you can find it ... rich in CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), a fatty acid with potent antioxidant properties. Eat omega-3's from fatty fish and whole eggs from chickens fed flaxseed. Eat more calcium-rich foods, and avoid foods which inhibit calcium absorption, such as whole wheat and bran. Eat more antioxidant and fiber-rich vegetables and low-glycemic fruits. Hmmm ... sounds like a lowcarb diet would fit the bill quite nicely .

Okay, I'll quit ranting now, and go read the article.

Is a steak the same thing as a package of bologna? Which is more likely to cause bowel cancer? By lumping "red meat" and "processed meat" together, they have made this study totally useless. However, the media will distribute this report as "proven results" that red meat is bad for you. No mention of the chemicals in processed meat.

I replied to the site as well. However, I don't expect my comments to be posted.

you got that right! Lump them in with known carcinogens and then "prove" they all cause cancer.

LOL well the prices sure didn't go down with the Mad Cow scare a year or so ago....so I doubt this will have an impact.

Would be nice, though, huh?

Happiness protects against cancer. California has happy cows, therefore California should have a low rate of colon cancer. Hey where are those statistics!!!Since our cows are so happy, that is probably what is keeping the price of beef so high.

:agree:
My favorite commercial is when the cows are racing and Flossie or Daisy ( Whoever ) is winning until she sees the clover. She stops and begins to eat.I also love the rainy season commercial where all of the cows are running to keep from getting covered by the shadow of the teenie cloud. They comment on how much they hate the rainy season.

My best friend was diagnosed with colon cancer that had spread to her liver when she was 49 yrs old. She has eaten vegetarian almost her whole life. I've gotten to where I don't even pay attention to most of these studies that get the headlines. Once you've taken statistics, you realize how meaningless most of them are. Just my $.02

Sorry to hear about your friend. You are right tho. The statistics are meaningless. Have you noticed how few of the articles now don't even bother putting in the margin of error?

The sad thing is that people see these articles and choose a bowl of cereal instead of a piece of meat.
