Hi! I'm planning to walk the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego on June 5, and have a basic question. I am planning to use a new set of shoes during the marathon (during training, the shoes I was wearing started to hurt my feet after 20+ miles) and I need to know how much training with the new shoes should I do in the next two weeks. I'm supposed to taper, but how?

When I buy new running shoes I wear them all day for two weeks. That's enough for them to feel comfortable for me.

First of all good luck in San Diego. I am sure, you'll have a great time.
We ran the race last year - it is really one of the best organized marathon. Full, superior pre-during-after race support.

I think tapering is more important now. How about wearing the new shoes everyday for your short walks?
I do not think you need hile milage to "break the shoes". Are there the same type as your previous?

P.S.: I have many ideas where to celebrate after the race. :D

Cheers:

Thanks for the advice! I'm on 'enforced' taper right now with a head cold. I will have to do 1 hour walking on Saturday [TNT training and sendoff], and will try to do major walking in San Francisco on Sunday. Next week minimal training. (Which implies eating REAL clean.... I try to match diet with exercise. No more having a slice of pie with dinner after walking 9 miles!)

The new shoes are not the same type as the old ones. Old ones are Sketcher brand slipon walking shoes. No laces and comfortable. Brand new shoes are used for training purposes. When they start losing their support, they become normal everyday shoes until they are too worn out.

Park City Marathon last Saturday. Cold, very hilly, 7000ft altitude. Drank gatorade every two miles, had a chocolate Gu at 10, 15 and 20 miles. Finish time 4:00.
