I have a friend who once passed out and ended up in the emergancy room. His blood sugar at the time was like 400. He got scared went off the soda and for like 2 weeks watched his diet. That was over a year ago. I checked his blood sugar a few weeks ago it was around 126. I guess my question is...is it possible without being diabetic to have a glucose reading that high and NOT have diabeties? He hasn't been back to doc and he hasn't passed out again but I can't beleive someone can have 400 reading and pass out but not be diabetic.
Any ideas on this?

Im not a doctor or even close to one but iam a diabetic. my sister is borderline diabetic and her sugars only go way high like that if she drinks pop or eats a high carb meal. other wise her sugars are normal or close to it most of the time even without realy watching what she eats. perhaps your friend is borderline? i have also heard that when a non diabetic is taking some medications or under going certain medical treatments it can raise their sugars for a bit.
sorry i dunno how to help . good luck to your friend.-BJ

Well he did say he had ALOTTA Mountian Dew that day lol He musta meant ALOT. I am newly diagnosed just about 4 weeks ago and reading alot of stuff. I happened to think about his incident and wondered if I should try to convince him to follow up on that. I guess the thing that got me was the number of us type 2s who never even know they have it. Scary thought. I guess those of us diagnosed are the lucky ones. At least we can begin taking care of it.
Thanks for the reply.

He definitely needs to get it checked out. A person who is nondiabetic will not have a blood sugar that high even after a high carb meal or a lot of soda. I was diagnosed as a type II based on after meal readings of over 200. He's only making the problem worse for himself if he doesn't get it checked out.

Thank you Lisa I thought so too. There is no way that can happen without an insulin issue. I'll talk to him.

According to ADA they say you are diabetic if you have over 200 anytime. Is this true? This past weekend, I checked my son's blood an hour after lunch and it was 265!

He had two cheese sandwhiches.. he hates meat (Must be from his Dad's side of the family ;) )
What I'm worried about it all the times growing up and my mom checking my blood and sometimes it was in the 300s after a meal but back to below 100 in 2 hours... can you said headaches, starving, etc?

Kassie, if two cheese sandwiches (estimate about 60 grams of carb if they were 2 slice sandwiches) spiked his blood sugar that high at 1 hour, I'd suggest a visit to the doctor.
In answer to your question, no, it's not normal to spike over 200 even after a very high carb meal. Even for a glucose tolerance test (straight glucose), normal values for a 50 gram dose are below 140 at the 1 hour mark and for a 75 gram test, over 200 at 1 hour is considered abnormal. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003466.htm
Before you panic, though, make sure that the test strips are not expired; expired strips can give you an abnormally high result.

you can have hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia and not be diabetic..i'd see a dr. first...you'd be amazed how much your sugar can change after a meal...you'd most def. want to try it 1st thing in the morning after not eating for 12 hours....

Kassie, that is often a very early stage of type II diabetes. The blood sugar goes too high after a meal but the pancreas are still able to put out insulin and bring it down to normal levels by 2 hours. Often it drops too low after that.
That's where I was at until I got on a strict low carb diet and exercised. I knew I was at risk for diabetes but I'd been followed for years and the fasting blood glucose was never over 82 so even my doc thought I was ok. He was surprised to see I was having readings as high as 300 after a meal of 40-60 gms of carbs.
I would definitely mention it to a doctor. The pancreas burn out and then the fasting blood glucose number starts to rise. I am so glad I found out I have diabetes before that happened to me. Because now I can make changes that may save the beta cells in my pancreas and give me a few more good years. Relying on just the fasting blood glucose doesn't always catch diabetes.

Hi Kassie! Getting that number for your son must have been scary! Not saying that this is the cause (but wouldn't it be great if it were), but make sure that he washes and dries his hands really well before you test him again...
I got a 177 reading from my daughter once. Once I recovered from my absolute shock, I had her wash her hands really well. I re-tested and her reading was 110 (this was an hour after a high carb lunch). So obviously hand washing can make a big difference.
Good luck to you!

Thanks Leesa  I know what you mean! I did have my son wash his hands especially after that lunch he had!!
Lisa, I totally agree with you. I had a glucose test done when I was 18 and my sugar went up to 200 and back down and they said I wasn't diabetic, never was insilin resistance even mentioned. It was only in a second test when I was pregnant with my first child and I developed gestational diabetes that I found out than anything over 200 was diabetic and that I was very insilin resistance. If only I was told what to do about it, I wouldn't be diabetic now!
