Hi! Is this forum for type2 diabetes or is it a weight loss forum? I've had type2 diabetes for about 5 years now. I'm 160 pounds 68 inches tall, 32 inch waist and very muscular. I also have normal A1C and my BP has always been normal to low. When I wake up in the morning my glucose is usually 88. I do not exercise at all.
That being said... I also have neuropathy in my hands and legs, am confused most of the time and am semi impotent.
I went on a low carb diet once but lost lots of weight, which I don't want to do. Hardly you typical type2 diabetic:)
Can anyone here relate to this or can you point me somewhere that can. I can't be the only person in this situation... although I feel like it :)
Thanks

Hi Capnbilly,
I can relate to what you're saying. I'm also a Type II diabetic. My A1C is normal and my BP is low too. But when I eat much carbs, my blood sugar will go up to 300 and then crash to 50 shortly after that. I also have neuropathy in my hands and one leg and suffer a lot from hypoglycemia.
I need to lose about 20 lbs but low carb is not working for me any longer to lose weight. I do it because it helps me keep my blood sugar under control I have no trouble keeping it in the 80-120 range if I stick with a strict low carb plan.
I think people like you and me who have some normal numbers but still suffer from symptoms are in the minority of type II diabetics. My doctor told me they don't really know what to do with us. The blood sugar is under control but we still have diabetes and have symptoms from it. I find it very frustrating. But I'm just doing my best to control the blood sugar and get in lots of exercise because I know those things can only help. I don't know what else might. I've tried metformin but it made me go hypoglycemic.

If we control our blood sugar in the 70-120 range over a period of years, do we ever lose that diagnosis of type II diabetes?
I know that once having had it, I will always need to be careful of what I eat and watch my sugars, but I wonder if the medical community ever considers it reversed.

If you have good A1C, low fasting glucose, and good blood pressure, then how is your 1 and 2 hr glucose reading after meal. I heard that the glucose after meal is the most important predictor of future complication.
I'm a T2 without medication also. When I started this lowcarb diet, I started leaning toward vegetarian (not by intention). I also started listening to some TV comersial about a doctor who was selling book about change of lifestyle to cure many diseases. I didn't buy the book, but what they said about our sleeping habit, stress, and diet made sense.
About Neuropathy, I know that in Dr. Bernstein book, he talked about adding Evening primerose oil as a supplement. Recently, I also read in Joslin website that they discovered the master switch that trigger the DM and they also discovered a simple common drug, aspirin, as possible treatment. Therefore, I started taking a baby aspirin a day.
When I was diagnosed by accident in the emergency room, the doctor there told me that if I would loose the fat/weight, I would reverse the DM. That incident was 1 1/2 year ago, since than my doctor has been confused about my condition. He blamed some of his medication to cause my glucose elevated.
We have to try our best to follow a good lifestyle of diet, exercise, and mind. YMMV. Thanks.

Have you ever checked thyroid function? Also fluoride levels? I am a T2 with low throid. Throid problems have very simular syptoms to diabetes. They are both organs/glands from endrocrine system. If you have problems with one you have an increased chance with having problems with other organs/glands in the same system. Fluoride is throid inhibinator. it isn't just in water or toothpaste either but hidden in prossed foods that wer made in areas with high floride in the water. Not all test for throid function test floride levels in body. You will need to ask your doctor for it. I have learned I have to be very proactive in my own health and find out about this stuff myself becauce doctors are over whelmed and don't have the time any more. Talk to your doctor and good luck!
