I don't know whether to consider myself having thyroid disease or not because after my thyroidectomy last year the doc said consider yourself cured. I'm in my second week of induction, doing Atkins, and have lost 2-3 pounds. Seems slow to me but I feel pretty good. Last year right after my surgery I joined the gym and hired a nutritionist. I did everything I was supposed to do and didn't lose anything and I was on a higher dose of synthroid than I am now. My nutritionist put me on a balanced diet, counting exchanges and I didn't lose weight. She started me out at 2000 calories and then cut me to 1800, still I didn't lose. I called my thyroid doctor and he said 1200 calories. That is way low and my nutritionist said he was wrong. Anyway I got fed up and quit dieting after about six months of all that. I really like the ease of the Atkins diet and the way I feel. I haven't been hungry at all and I feel energetic, more so than on the other diets. I am 50 years old and I have about 116 pounds to lose, was 119 last week, hurrah!

Hey there! I just got my thyroid out also, this past January. I have been hypothyroid all my life, and have been taking syntheroid (thank god the doctors were on top of things when I was born!) Anyway, I started induction a few days ago and I already feel great! I haven't checked the scale yet, just in case I get discouraged. Progress may be slow for you but it is good that you feel good, the weight loss will come! Don't worry about that :) .

Hi Nanacat,
I've had thyroid problems for the last 30 years and have had several operations to remove bits over that time. I thought that I had a tiny bit left, but my Prof told me the other week that I have none left. I have been on synthyroid since 1988 at various doses. I am currently taking 175mcg daily.
Don't be too disheartened if you are losing slowly - at least you are losing
Keep up the good work.
