i had to go on the insulin pump in october 2004. before that i was taking 7 shots a day of fast acting insulin. my diabetes was greatly worsened when i got pregnanct and had a very hard pregnancy in 2002-2003. it caused me to no longer be a type 2 but a type 1 because i no longer make my own insulin( according to the c peptide test).
my pump has the carb smart feature that tells how many units to bolus according to how many carbs im about to eat but still its not easy to do it right. i can eat a salad with only raw veggies in it then bolus and i will either go to high or to low. low carbing and being on the pump also tends to cause me low sugars no matter how we figure out my basal rates. im about to give up.

Hi there! Good to have another pumper on the list. First let me clarify- you can't really be T2 THEN T1. T1 is an autoimmune disorder. You appear to be a T2 who is now on insulin. (Being a T1 I know lots about this science-y stuff) That said: I love my pump- since I've always known injections, I feel like I get to be on this great device, not like I have to be on it.
The carb smart feature does not work well for a very low GI carb meal. Here's what I do, I do count the carbs (MINUS the fiber) and if it's a mostly veggie meal, I use the EXTENDED bolus over about 2 hours. This is why I think the pump works super with low carbing. I don't need to give all that rapid acting up front- rather I stretch it out to match the slow release of high fiber foods. You should also try the combination bolus, which allows you to give a little up front and the rest over a long period of time. Finally, I highly recommend COUNTING PROTEIN. You need to figure out how many grams of protein effects you over how many hours. Most people eating high carb don't eat that much protein, so they think "it doesn't count" - we low carbers eat much more and I find 30 grams gives me a 50 point rise about 6-8 hours after eating- I have different basal patterns for high protein foods.
I share your frustration- carb-centered pumps can be not-so-helpful 'till you figure them out. Then they're wonderful!

thank you for the advice . i never thought about using the combo/extended bolus.
now a days they consider ppl to be type 1 or 2 according to what the c peptide test says. i did not believe it myself but my endo doc and his entire team say i was a type 2 and now a type 1 according to the past and presant c peptide test. but i consider myself a type 2 very insulin resistant diabetic who no longer makes any insulin like that of a type 1.
im going to try that combo bolus tomorrow :)
the entire going from type 2 to 1 always causes almost fights when i tell about it. lol but to me a diabetic is a diabetic no matter what type LOL
