I had my blood chemistry tested a couple of weeks ago for life insurance and got the results in the mail today. I understand a couple things but about most of these numbers I am clueless. Anyone have any idea of my overall health based on this? I'm 24 if that makes any difference.
Blood Pressure: 91/60
Glucose: 77
Fructosamine: 1.6
BUN: 12
Creatinine: 0.7
Alkaline Phosphate: 87
Bilirubin Total: 0.4
AST: 15
ALT: 17
GGT: 11
Albumin: 4.0
Globulin: 3.0
Cholesterol: 172
HDL Cholesterol: 49
Cholesterol/HDL: 3.5
Triglycerides: 64
Heh, the results also show that I tested negative for cocaine and tobacco, but I sorta already knew that ;)

Everything looks goods. But your cholesterol is a little higher than I would have expected. It's not too high (that number is 200), but you may want to keep an eye on it.

Hm, I'll figure out something for lowering cholesterol I guess. Thanks!

Thank you :) I'm sure your numbers will be where you want them to be in no time.

SugarFluff, at 172 there is no need to lower it further, especially given your low triglycerides; your numbers are very good as they are. Even if the number were to be over 200, it may not necessarily be reason for concern as long as your ratios look good and your triglycerides remain low. :)

Oh, awesome, thanks! That's one less thing for me to worry about :)

Lisa N -- That's exactly what I was thinking. My DR said my cholesterol was 187 and she was THRILLED with that. So, if 172 is bad, I'm in trouble for sure.
I just read that borderline high cholesterol is 200 to 239 and you are considered too high with a number above 239, for whatever that's worth. Also, my DR told me that a triglyceride number under 130 was good.

Showoff! ;)
Congratulations on great numbers. The BP numbers in particular make me envious.

Did you know you were going to be tested for tobacco and cocaine? If not, that doesn't sound ethical to me!

Sorry to disagree, but I was always told the lower the better (as in longer life), similar to blood pressure. I'm in my upper 40's and my highest reading ever was 142. That's when i fell off the low carb wagon. Usually it is in the 120's. Same with blood pressure...got high when I fell off the wagon...now back to the usual 110/70.

I had to go to the doctor anyway so I took my results in with me. I mentioned lower cholesterol readings like this and he said anything under 140 isn't good for me but that my numbers are really great just as they are. When I look at my results sheet it says 140 cholesterol would be the lowest acceptable as well. I guess that just goes to show that everyone is different :)
CindySue, I didn't know that they were testing me for drugs but I didn't ask, either, so I guess cake (low carb of course ;) )is on the tester's face as well as my own.

Excuse me? I don't understand this comment. NO doc should be testing for drugs or alcohol without your knowlege! What, because s/he's a doc they can get that info? Uh, no, I don't think so! This is unethical and you should speak with your doc about it!

Lower is really not better when it comes to total cholesterol. At levels below 160, the rates of depression, anxiety, agressive behavior and suicide increase: http://bjp.rcpsych.org/cgi/content/full/177/1/77
http://www.fsmaonline.org/depression.htm
Low cholesterol readings can also be an indicator of other disease processes http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/cholesterol_myth_4.html A friend of mine also has cholesterol levels at 120 or lower. His doctor encourages him to eat whatever fats he can to increase it (butter, eggs, full-fat dairy products, etc...) and wants him to get it to a higher level.

That's interesting...thanks for the info. Don't know what I can do about it though...it just seems to stay naturally low no matter how I eat...and peculiarly, the more fat/meat I eat the lower it gets!
