I have lost 7lbs so far. Started at 201 and now 194, I haven't been below 190 in a couple of years. My magic number was 195, i could eat whatever I wanted, but I would say it is not fun at 195. I do enjoy eating.
I find the book not too clear.
I have done Atkins before, just a matter of sticking to it for the long term.
How accurate are the scales that do bodyfat like Tanita?

Hi there! Welcome to the forum and to SB!
I'll admit, the book is not very clear at times. There are some links at the top of this forum to help you sort things out. Here's the page : SBD info (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=234138)
I've also done Atkins in the past, and I find SB to be a much more "livable" plan. When I was on Atkins, I never felt like it was a plan I could stick to for the rest of my life. With SB, I truly feel like this is a WOL that I'll stick with "for life" :)
Glad you could join us!

Hi Paul! Welcome!
I'm pretty new here myself. I am just re-reading the South Beach book and like you, I also find it pretty confusing at times and abit contradictory. I also started on the Atkins plan and now I'm doing something more South Beach style. I can't really comment on the body fat scales as I don't own one, but I've always been under the impression that the only true measures of body fat are submersion tests, x-rays or calipers. I'm not sure how a scale could accomplish that..but I could be wrong and maybe they've come out with some new amazing technology that I don't know about.... Anyways, good luck to you and wishing you much success! :)

Hey PaulPaul! Congrats on your 7 lbs. loss!! SBD offers a lot of freedom and that makes it hard to understand the restrictions. The way I got through it was to follow the foodlists as best I could and to experiment with cheating a little here and there to see what affected my weightloss. It's a lot of trial and error, but with a lot of success. The forum is great too for help with some of those tricky subjects.
As far as the scales, I think all they do is calculate weight and height and age. I actually just bought one, but haven't figured it out yet. However, I was given this website to help figure my body fat since I was curious. www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/diet.html
You just plug in your measurements and it gives you a number. Good luck with everything! tara
