Some type 2's are put on meds when they are diagnosed, depending on how high their blood sugars are at the time. As to at what point are medications prescribed, I think a lot depends on the individual doctor involved in care and how agressive they tend to be with treatment. Some doctors will try the diet, weight loss and excercise route first and see how blood sugars respond. Others will prescribe medications immediately and then discontinue them if blood sugars remain in normal range for a period of time. If your blood sugars have been controlled through diet and excercise but are starting to climb over a period of time, a doctor may then opt to start a patient on oral medications using the rationale that diet and excercise alone no longer seem adequate to maintain control.
The primary goal is (and should be) to normalize blood sugars as quickly as possible to minimize the damage that elevated blood sugars cause.
I believe that the criteria that my doctor uses is a FBG 200 and above, start oral medications immediately. FBG getting close to 300 and insulin is considered. Different doctors have different criteria. It's also getting more common for doctors to prescribe other medications for type 2 diabetics as well along with oral antidiabetics, such as statins, because of the increased risk for heart disease even if cholesterol is not currently elevated.

Welcome johnny,

Like Lisa I LOVE my low carb WOL, and one of the reasons is it gives me MUCH more energy than I ever had on low fat. Some people find that they struggle a bit (with energy) during the transition time when the body is adapting to use fat as its main energy source (some don't - I didn't) In any event this is just a short transition phase. Did you take any of the recommended potassium/magnesium supplements when you tried? - the diuretic nature of any new diet can lead to a short term shortage of some electrolytes - which can also lead to low energy levels - but this is easily remedied.

Cheers,

Malcolm

Johnny, like Malcolm, I never noticed a decrease in energy. Then again, considering I had an A1c of 12.8 when I started, I was feeling so bad that crappy would have been an improvement. Happily, I improved well beyond that point. ;)
When you say, 'fanatically followed low carb', how low are we talking? Did you eat vegetables or take any supplements (remembering an earlier post, I'm guessing that veggies were probably excluded).
Poor nutrition on any WOE is likely to result in less than optimal health and wellbeing. It also seems that many diabetics don't do well with super low carb, either (getting to 20 grams or less per day).
So...yes...you can love low carb if you do it properly (and learn to like at least a few vegetables ;) ).

maybe it was a combination low carb low calories plus all that excersize that made me feel so zapped of any energy...or maybe it was the change in lifestyle..mind ya i was around 300 pounds..a couch potato here...when i look at vegg just don't find them appealing seriously..went to store today and i looked and i looked and i left the produce section lol...used to eat lettuce does that count..though avacado i used to eat..but hear there high in fat...

Johnnylol,

Low-carbing should not be low-calorie. Doing both will definitely sap your energy.

As for vegetables/fruit, avocado are a great low-carb fruit. The fats in them are very good for the body.

Also wanted to add: healthy fats, like those found in avocados, are only a problem if you are also eating high carb.
High carb + high fat = bad idea. Low carb + low fat/very low cal = also a bad idea.

High carb + high fat = bad idea.

Isn't that the truth! I have that to thank for my diabetes now. That and the low fat disaster which was followed by the even worse vegan disaster my friend talked me into.

I feel nauseated and have almost no appetite if I drop to 30g carbs. Hard to keep your calories up if don't feel like eating at all.

I guess some ppl are not efficial on using FFA aned ketones as fuel.
