'Say no to pop,' Nunavut residents told Last Updated Mon, 25
Apr 2005 11:44:18 EDT CBC News IQALUIT - Health officials in
Nunavut are calling on residents to "Drop the Pop" this week
in an effort to raise awareness about tooth decay, obesity and
diabetes in the northern territory.

The five-day anti-soft drink campaign kicks off Monday, aimed
at both students and adults in Nunavut's population of 27,000.

Pop machines can be popular in schools (CP file photo). Ainiak
Korgak, the manager of health promotion with Nunavut's health
department, says Inuit have increasingly been choosing soft
drinks and other processed foods over traditional diets, and
over healthier imported items such as milk and juice.

"A community will run out of pop and they'll charter a plane
to bring pop, so that tells you how much people love their
pop," he said.

A Coca-Cola manufacturing plant that opened its doors in
Iqaluit a decade ago produces up to 4,000 two-litre bottles
and 20,000 smaller bottles a day, just to quench the
territory's thirst.

Diabetes isn't yet a serious problem in Nunavut, but obesity
rates are rising and tooth decay is a big concern.

By this fall, more than 750 infants in the territory will have
had some or all of their teeth pulled out.

Amy Caughey, a nutritionist with the Nunavut government,
blames the nine to 12 teaspoons of sugar in each bottle of
soft drink and the fact that some parents start giving their
children soft drink while they're still babies.

"If babies have pop in a bottle, or younger children are
getting a lot of pop, they're not getting the things that they
need to grow and it can be quite harmful," she said.

Schools, grocery stores and other businesses are taking part
in the "Drop the Pop" project.

Actually, I have written on this topic on numerous occasions.

The acid in both Coke and Pepsi causes severe erosion of
dental enamel.

I lost all my teeth due to dental erosion caused from drinking
soda at every break at work over a period of 20 or 30 years.
When my front teeth finally started to crumble apart, I had
all my teeth pulled out at the age of 41. I have been wearing
a full set of dentures for over a decade.

There were many reasons why I lost my teeth, but dental
erosion was certainly the straw that broke the camel's back on
my decision to stop trying to save my teeth.

By the time you realize that your teeth are eroding from soda
pop, it is usually too late to do anything about the problem.
The signs of teeth erosion are protruding silver amalgams.

On the plus side, I nolonger suffer from chronic inflamation
from gum disease which can cause heart disease. Nor, is there
any longer any mercury in my mouth. :)

Maybe the the Thread should read: Drinking Pop prevents
Hearts Attacks!

Schizophrenics and psycotics are known to eat lots of sweets,
almost without exception. That clearly explains your behavior
in this ng. You ought to seek out professional help.

Perhaps, if you were to concentrate?

Acid, ... Acid, Acid!

The primary threat to health from soda, is the erosion of
tooth enamel rather than tooth decay.

Your true nature has just been revealed. :)

Nutrition is about renewing your body.

Rotten teeth have little to do with your current nutritional
habits. Teeth are one part of the body that are non-renewable.
Just thought that 'the Crapper', might want to know. :)

I had my teeth examined by about a dozen different professors
of Dentistry, in a dental school lab. Most said that it was
Coca-Coca, but a few were convinced that I was suffering from
bulimia. I don't like throwing up. And, the last thing that I
am going to do is to stick a finger down my throat. My weight
has NOT changed in around 30 years.

These professors were teaching stundents to become
dentists. So, I think that they know more about the subject
than TC does. :)

When the dentist does a silver amalgam filling, it is done
flush with the surface of the tooth with a smooth finish. But,
when your enamel has dissolved away from the acid in Coca-Cola
all that is left is the protruding silver amalgams. Some where
quite noticeable, once the dentist pointed it out to me.
Eventually my front teeth got so thin, you could almost see
through them. And, they were literally crumbling apart.

Dental erosion from soda is a major threat that is not very
well advertised.

My dentist told me I had severe enamel erosion on my teeth. My
conclusion was that it was the diet pepsi I was drinking and
when I stopped further damage stopped.

My idiot dentist did not except my conclusion and said
that pop
could not do that kind of damage. He kept saying I must
have acid
reflux and tried to refer me to somebody. Needless to say
I did not
feel obliged to start buying drugs to treat a
non-existent problem.

Bullshit. Yellow teeth can be naturally yellow or stained
enamel colours. The key here being "enamel" still there,
not eroded.

Go to dentist and have them extracted and exchanged with a
denture :-) Then you don't get lot of problems when infections
start the nightmare with infected tooth roots etc. It's a big
pain, and can spread to the sinuses. In worst case your CRP
may go up in readings of 500-750 :-(
