I have IBS and since Jan 01 05 I have been true to Atkins as much as I can and I have seen my IBS starting to fade away. I just went and saw my Dr. today and I told him that I have chocen the LC way of life and I was expecting to hear an ear full  but he thinks this way of life may have fixed my IBS. I am now gone the other way thow and cant go #2 so he has me stopping my medication to see if it is the diet of the meds. Could this be true ??

I'm not sure what your question is, but this had slipped to the second page, so I thought I'd bump it.

Never heard of http://www.scdiet.org/ ?

Interesting question - one would think that the high fat of Atkins would negatively affect IBS, however, I'm so amazed at all the things this WOL has "fixed" in so many - let us know how you go on.

IBS stand's for Irritable bowl syndrome it is a stress issue that effects your bowl movments. For me I could not hold in a movment and I would have to go about 15 times a day. It is nasty. I do not know if the diet has stoped it or the med's my Dr. gave me we are looking into this right now. I was just wondering if any one else with IBS has seen any changes in there condition :q:

I wasn't ever officially diagnosed with IBS but I'm pretty sure I had it. I was like you, had to poop many times every day, very crampy, very messy. Horrible, just horrible. Anyway, it took quite awhile, like a year or so on low carb, for my symptoms to go away. In fact, it got worse for awhile. But I've symptom free for about 1 year with maybe 1 relapse or so.

Although not a regular sufferer of IBS, when there were stressful events in my life, I believe I did suffer bouts of IBS. Maybe 3-5 times per year.

Something has happened to my digestive system on this WOE. My bowels move 2-3 times per week. Each time, I have severe cramps during the process but nothing before and nothing after..just as though I hadn't felt as if I was going to die at the time! Literally. As the intestine moves, it gives me cramps. I don't know if it's due to a lower bulk being passed or due to something that I'm not getting in my diet or because of the added fat in my diet. I'm curious to know about others' experiences, too.

Try Coconut Oil! It's supposed to help all sorts of digestive problems, including IBS! You can search the web for info... Tropical Traditions is a good site. I have the book "The Coconut Oil Miracle" and it's chock full of health benefits of coconut oil. Good luck!

Well I had it bad and From what the Dr.'s have said a lot of it is do to stress. It realy was recking my life. But since I have started Low Carb It has cleared up. I have changed a few things to help with the stress. The only problam is that I now do not go at all. Maybe 1-2 a week. I think I am going to try a fiber supplement and see if that will help

Since starting LC at the beginning of the year my IBS problems have gone away. It's one of the main plus points that keeps me committed to the LC lifestyle (other than the weight control benefit of course!).

IBS is not caused by the same thing in all people. IBS is the symptom, not the cause. I know you said your IBS was caused by stress, but perhaps it could also be due to a food allergy to one of the carbohydrates you are omitting. Common food allergies to consider are wheat, rice, corn, potatos and milk. When you have a food allergy, your body's immune system launches an immune response in the intestine leading to GI distress.

I Have Had Ibs For Most Of My Life And As Soon As I Started Atkins, It Went Away, When I Have A Carb Binge (like Today) I Get All The Old Symptoms Back, Atkins Is More Of A Health Thing Rather Than A Diet For Me Lately.
Wheat Is The Main Culprit And Is Avoided On This Diet.
Stick With It.

Dr. Lutz talks briefly about intesinal problems that he treats with low-carb in his book, Life Withouth Breat. The problems treated include IBS and Crohn's. He spends more time talking about the success of handling such issues with low-carb in one of his other books, Sick Stomach-Sick Bowels, which is unfortunately only available in german.

Hello,
I've had IBS ever since Nov 2004 and it was horrible on the contrary i've had congestion and i wouldnt go except 1-2 times every two weeks!!! Back then i was a carb addict, and i've started low carb dieting ever since March and i just feel great!! I've been going almost everyday if not the other, all the other symptoms such as bloating and gasses just fadded away. Nevertheless, it all comes back whenever i cheat and eat any carb stuff...
The great about it is that im losing weight while i am getting rid of those symptoms too, which are pretty irritating!!

Peace,

I, for one, am a believer. I have Crohn's disease, and I have it bad. It was to the point where my only alternative was going to be surgery to cut out a large portion of my small bowel, but the doctor (bless him) said that he has heard from other patients that the Atkins diet helps them control their symptoms. So, I decided to try it. I lost 30 pounds, and felt better than I had in years. Then, like a do-do, I went off (long story) and regained all of it back. The symptoms came back too. So, while laying in a hospital bed, I vowed to make the LC woe MY woe for life. I am back now and have had a hard time losing, but the scale is moving at long last and I feel waaaaay better. I bet it is the same theory for IBS.
