has anyone heard of this before? i've been eating small amounts of ground flax seed added to cereal or veggie for a while now with not problems. but a couple of weeks ago i made some flax seed muffins. they tasted great (and i'm a little more ...regular, if you know what i mean) but i noticed that i felt like i had a permanent lump in the back of my throat. it didn't occlude my airway, i could swallow food ok, i wasn't gagging. but it was uncomfortable enough to the point i was thinking of going to the doctor. well, i ran out of muffins and didn't get around to making a new batch for a couple of days when i realized my throat felt normal. then i made more muffins and within a moment or two of eating one, i got the lump in my throat again. it really doesn't make sense that a clump of flaxseed would be sticking to the back of my throat, but i can't think of anything else.

and, damn, i was enjoying those little muffins.

Hmmm, might be an allergy?? Or maybe it's the gluten that's formed with flax meal and water? Maybe you need to drink a lot with it?

Interesting, tho. I just started eating flax cereal a few days ago and I just love it. I just make the hot cereal, tho, and add some cream to it to thin it. I find it very glue-y before I add the cream.

I get the same thing if i don't immediately drink something after i brush my teeth... i guess i'm allergic to something in the tooth paste, probably fluoride. Same thing goes for sunflower seeds. I get a feeling like there is mucous in the back of my throat that i can't swallow, and after a while it feels like my throat isn't closing 100% when i try to swallow. The back of my throat also feels kind of pastey, inflamed and "spongy"... it's hard to describe. lol. But for me it is definately an allergy.

I always find baked goods made with flax meal to be drier and I have to sip liquid between each bite.

I much prefer to make flax seed cereal, it goes down nice.

I have to remember to keep my liquid consumption high to keep my mouth from feeling dry.

never thought of that. i don't have allergy problems but that does make some sense. my throat is kinda sensitive to pressure, i can't wear turtlenecks or tight necklaces, so it wouldn't take much swelling to bother me.

sigh, they were such tasty little hockey pucks too! :tears:

I would say to go ahead and keep eating them but to make sure to drink water while you're eating them and then maybe finish off with a glass of water. Great way to get your water consumption in, too :D I was reading my package of flax meal yesterday and it said that you could add 2 tbsp of the flax meal to a glass of water and "follow it with another glass of water".

I know when I eat an Atkins Advantage bar I need to sip water all the way thru and a big glass afterwards otherwise I feel like I'm choking and my mouth and throat are all pasty feeling and 'clogged' feeling.

I love the flax cereal, too. I put 2 tbsp of flax meal in a bowl, add 3 tbsp of boiling water and a bit of splenda and stir it really well and then let it sit for a bit. Then, right before I eat it I add 1 tbsp of heavy cream, stir it up, zap it in the microwave for 20 seconds and gobble it up :yum: :yum: I do have water after I drink it to get that glue-y feeling out of my mouth and throat. Nothing terrible, just needs a rinse :D
