Dear Members,
For the past months, we (forum admins and moderators) debated whether to create a South Beach Diet sub-forum for our members. After exhaustive study/reading/debate, we have voted, Yes, but with serious reservations, and for a trial period to see how it develops. Therefore, we would like to provide some background on the critical issues involved in reaching this decision:
1. Maintaining a Supportive Atmosphere: We pride ourselves on maintaining a very supportive environment and flame-war free space for support and discussion. We do not intend or pretend to be all things to all people. For the low-carb plans that we do support, we want to ensure compatibility between the plans. If we find the situation unmanageable, or if we find we need to constantly remind members to be civil to each other and respect followers of other low-carb plans, we may need to reconsider whether maintaining an SBD forum is a good idea. But, from past experience with our members, we trust this will not be necessary and that all low-carb followers can respect followers of other low-carb plans.
2. Support for healthy low-carb lifestyle: We have a fundamental disagreement with SBD's position towards natural animal fats, i.e. saturated fats. While SBD broke from the mainstream of traditional diets of preaching low-fat and low-calorie, it kept one questionable idea--disdain for naturally existing saturated fats from animals and plants. There is a large body of new scientific evidence correcting this misconception, and Dr. Agatston provided no supporting evidence of any dangers from animal fats. To our knowledge, all studies condemning saturated fats were conducted on specifically high-carb diets
So, we encourage SBD followers to research the issue, as they may miss out on a lot of valuable, healthy, natural, fat-soluble vitamins and minerals that exist in natural saturated fats. Additional information and references related to this issue are provided at the bottom of this post.
3. South Beach Diet is a Low-Carb Diet: This point is intended for those who have not read the SBD book, regardless of which plan they follow. While the book opens up with a sentence, "this is not a low-carb diet", the entire book is focused on reducing carb intake, and making carb choices based on the Glycemic Index. There is a misconception surrounding SBD, that it is low-calorie, and/or low-fat. This is incorrect, as there is not fat or caloric restrictions in the book. However, this misconception may be based on some of the daily menus listed in the book and on various web sites, particularly with the amount of low-fat products, egg substitutes and fat-free cooking spray recommended. The book specifically discourages using low-fat products, due to the usual substitution for fat with sugar and processed carbs. It is worth explaining that the book only mentions low-fat dairy, due to its position regarding saturated fats. i.e. the book is not encouraging low-fat, it's advocating low saturated fats. We disagree with the author's position on saturated fats, as there are no supporting studies for this position. However, the plan is not low-fat, as such a label is not accurate. The plan is low on saturated fats.
4. Modified South Beach Diet: While we support those who follow SBD by the book, we are in essence promoting a modified version of the plan. i.e. SBD without limitations on saturated fats. But this is merely a suggested approach, and as stated, we encourage you to follow your own research of available scientific literature.
We are highlighting the above four points in order to prevent any possible misunderstandings. We support the South Beach Diet and consider it a valid low-carb plan. We do not consider it low-fat, or low-calorie. Yet we maintain that the author is in error in claiming that saturated fats are dangerous. He may be right. But until there is valid scientific research proving this point, we advise SBD followers to read the existing scientific literature to make an informed decision.
We should point out that this is our policy in general. We support all healthy low-carb plans, but we do not consider any specific low-carb author to be perfect. We respect every member's right to point out any disagreements they have with any specific low-carb plans and we've dedicated a specific forum(Low-Carb Research & Studies) that can be used for this purpose. We have also dedicated a special forum (The War Zone) for debates on issues based on opinions and that lack any supporting scientific evidence.
As always, we do not tell members what or what not to eat. Rather, we advise members to read the books for the plan they follow, do their own research and discuss with others, and follow the plan that works best for them.
However, please do not be offended and do not consider it any form of bashing when we highlight scientific evidence disproving the claimed dangers of saturated fats. Indeed, we invite you to contribute any research you find on this issue.
In conclusion, we hope having you with us does not create any conflicts and that any discussion regarding saturated fats, either for or against, will be welcomed and considered a helpful tool for research and not as insults or bashing.
Best regards,
Active Low-Carber Team.

i am very interested in trying the sout beach diet. i picked up the book though and see that most recipies include dairy. I have a degree of lactose intolerance/sensitivity and try to avaid dairy when possible. Do you think it is feasible to stay on the SB Diet without eating dairy?

Hey everybody,
I,ve been low carbing for a few weeks on atkins but I'm officially switching to SB. I just think it'll work better for me. Actually If you count all of my "mistakes" I've pretty much been doing SB except with too much fat. Still lost 10 lbs. I don't feel healthy though. I have no energy, hoping SB will feel better to me. I love to read all the advice on this website! I've really learned a lot here!

Hi, and welcome. I've been on this for 2 months. Yes, you can do this without eating dairy. I have not eaten dairy (except yogurt, which I can tolerate), for years, and on this plan you can do it too. A little light cream is usually okay for people with a dairy problem, because there is almost no lactose or other milk things in it (it's a lot of fat and stuff). Anyway, I also sub in almond milk now and then. You can eat almonds, and eat almond butter (within reason). Almonds are extremely high in calcium, broccoli isn't bad either. A calcium supplement is a good idea. Nuts and seeds are okay in SBD. Um...Have you tried goat's cheese? When I want to have something with cheese, I use goat's mozarella, which is lower in fat than the cheddar. I take a larger potato peeler (the new 2 inch kind they sell) and shave off a slice of cheese. You get a lot of satisfaction this way without eating too much (fat content). I can't drink goat's milk, don't like the taste, but love the cheeses. Most people who have a problem with cow's products are okay with goats.
But basically, most things that require dairy, like Italian foods, and potatoes, and bread, are gone from SB anyway, so the need for dairy is gone too, in a way.
Enjoy exploring!
Goldie.

Nuts! ha, ha. Okay here's my question. Can we eat roasted nuts and salted roasted nuts? I was watching an Oprah show from a week or so ago and the dr. on was saying that unroasted was best, blah, blah, blah. I don't think I've even seen unroasted in the store. I guess that's a health food store stop? I'm not sure I'll make one more stop with my 2 year old in tow. Plus it gets pricey doesn't it. Any advice?
I've been doing pretty well dieting and even exercised 4 days last week and 2 days this week so far... woo hoo! :D
Thanks,

Hi,
I'm new. I've never tried SBD before, but I read lots of articles on the net about it. I don't have the book yet, but I'd like to get started. I'd like to lose 50 pounds by the end of december. Is that a realistic goal on the SBD?
If anyone has any links on how to do this plan in phase I; what I eat, how many times, setting up meals, etc etc, please feel free to email me.
Also, I'd love a support buddy. If anyone is interested, veteran or beginner who is really going to be dedicated to sticking it out with me, please PLEASE email me.
Thanks

First of all....please see the thread here titled Updated Food lists...it also had Meal Plan charts that will help you learn how to eat the South Beach way. If you have a printer, please print this all up and use as reference as you learn the plan.
It will help you to read the book too.
Support is very available to you in the South Bach Babes thread, just post to it and introduce yourself.
IMHO, I do not think that anyone can lose 50 lbs in 3 months. It will take as long as it takes all depending on you and how close to stick to the plan, exercise, etc. A more realistic amount of time would be 6-8 months. It took me 10 months to lose 74 pounds, 15 months to lose 100 lbs and a total of 20 months to lose a total of 114 lbs. This was staying onplan for the entire time.
Each of us are different....age, body condition, health issues...all come into play in how long it takes us to lose our weight. I know you want it gone tomorrow but it just does not come off fast. It's better to lose it slowly anyway...1-2 lbs a week after phase I losses(5-10 lbs), is what you can expect.
So get busy posting to the other threads here in this forum and say Hi! to all our other members. :agree: :D
Good Luck!!

Hi Med  I switched over to SB in July, and am very pleased that I did.
I originally got to goal with Atkins in around 2002, but with one thing and another, I very stupidly put it all back on again and more. I kept trying to lose it again with Atkins, but found that I was yo-yoing the same 10lbs over and over again.
So, I decided to change to South Beach, having seen Judynyc's success with it.
As you can see from my stats, I'm now almost back to goal again, having lost over 30lbs, and two dress sizes, since I became a South Beacher :)
I love it on the Beach ;)

I was on another SB list (newbies2southbeachdiet) and they keep saying SB is NOT a low carb diet. And they post recipes for stuff like SF marshmallows that have almost 6 grams of carbs EACH.
I know that Dr A says it's a GOOD carb diet, and I understand about the difference between refined foods and whole grains, etc. but don't you guys count carbs at all? They DO turn to sugar in your bloodstream and for those of us who are diabetic, they have to be watched. I certainly can't afford hi carb food like that... my blood sugar would be off the charts and I wouldn't lose an ounce.
Help me out... I see you guys here on this low carb forum, yet over there I'm told the carbs don't matter!
which is it?
Thanks :)

I do tink that the type of carbs matter big time!! But I don't count and have not ever counted in 3 years of doing SBD.
I would not be eating SF marshmallows!! I did eat no sugar added fudgsicles when I was still losing weight....but even that is very portion controlled.
I'm very curious what else is used to make those marshmallows?
I'm maintaining my weight now eating about, and I'm guessing, between 40-80 carbs a day. To me, this is moderate controlled carb.....but compared to the way I used to eat,(200 refined carbs a day) this is very low carb.
Even now in maintenance, I eat in a controlled way....I do not eat the way I used to eat. I follow the Meal Plan Guide that you can find with the Updated Food lists.
By the way, I eat very little grain....I do eat veggies, fruit, dairy and protein....no flour to speak of.
On SBD, we are allowed 75 calories of sweet treats per day and if those people fit this into their plan, then they do what works for them. Being that you are diabetic, this may not work for you. Do what works for you! :agree:

Mon, Mar-12-07, 17:59
Actually, it wasn't a recipe for the marshmallows, it was a product called LeNouba SF Marshmallows
( http://www.lowcarbchocolates.com/lanoubamarsh.html )
And not only is the carb count a bit high, but it's also false advertiseing - if you look at the bag of marshmallows pictured at the top of the page it says "no sugar/no carbs" but if you go to the bottom of the page where the nutritional info is, it says 5.82 grams of carb per marshmallow!!
There is a site with a recipe that would be do-able. Its http://www.recipezaar.com/68342. These marshmallows have 1.82 per pint (its for marshmallow creme or marshmallows)
Big difference!!

Did you go to Ticker Factory yet? Thats where I get mine....
1-go there and design your ticker...
2-then copy the address,
3-bring it here and go to your User CP and click "edit signature"...
4-then paste the entire address there.
That should do it....Good Luck! and if it still doesn't work, try the technical area near the bottom of the main page...

Yup...the plan works and its not just another diet...it is a way of eating for life....there are no more diets in my life!! :agree:

Hi and Welcome!
When we use the Meal Plan Guide in the food list thread, it helps to teach us to eat this way. Pay attention to portion sizes on foods like beans, nuts and dairy. drink all your eater and eat lots of phase I veggies!!
I'd also like to suggest that you start a Journal here and log your food daily...this helped me a lot!! :agree:

Hi It took me while to come to the correct place to post the reply again as I got lost browsing other boards. I found the meal plan guide. Is it any different from the SB book? I tried to start my journal from My Plan but may need some help setting it up.
As for cravings I think they are both physical and mental! Also I think I need to plan meals well in advance so that I do not starved while preparing them

Yes, med is right, go into your profile and adjust your current weight to 160, not 150.
The Meal Plan Guide is not in the book itself as it comes from the official SBD web site. You can certtainly follow the menus in the book but many people like to create their own.

I am going to be ok today most of the day but this evening I am going to a friends house to play tennis have dinner there but I plan to drink a smoothy before leaving and stick to vegies at her house wish me luck!

If it were me, I'd wait for phase II...you can have 2 fudgsicles a day.

I've been on Atkins, and losing slowly. The things I miss are not bad things; white bread and potatoes don't tempt me, but skim milk, tabouli, berries and yogurt, an apple now and then would make me feel much more "normal." I'd be happy to trade some of the fat calories I've had on Atkins for them. So here I am. My book hasn't arrived, but I've gleaned enough from this forum (thanks to all of you) to get started. My only question now has to do with cheeses. Do I call them dairy? Do they count as part of the 2 cups/day?

Hi Joy...Welcome!!
Technically, cheese is considered an unlimited protein on SB and I happen to disagree with this....but just like atkins( 4 ozs a day), it does need to be kept to a minimum.
I allow myself 1-2 ozs a day and I do count it in with my dairy totals. At your current weight, cheese is calorie dense and it would be wise for you to keep it small also.
The Updated Food Lists thread has a lot of good info includng the Meal Plan Guides....have you seen them yet?
Good Luck!

I went to a new internist who took my blood for testing to get thyroid med. She might have to increase my thyroid dose. My weight is starting to come off slowly. I am starting to exercise again. Last week I did the spinning class at the Y 3 times. Felt good. Looked at the recipes. I am going to try the ricotta cheese cake

Thank you! I spent a long time last night browsing all the food lists and meal guidelines. There is a lot here, and I kept the printer busy. This is a goldmine of information and social support. I don't have a lot of weight to lose, but I want badly to integrate a healthy way of eating into my lifestyle so that there is never a sense of "going off the diet," just a slow transition into managing food for the rest of my life. I know I can never be unconscious about what I eat, but I hope to shuck the uncomfortable mind games about it, the magical thinking stuff, and guilt. I've been much larger than the 155 I was when I found this site. In fact, it was the umteenth time I'd approached a healthy weight and I began to panic at the thought of failing again to move from losing to maintaining. Atkins gave me a good start. I think SB will get me there!

Good for you Alaka!!
Your very welcome Joy!! :)
If you ask me, this plan has taught me how to eat properly for the first time in my life. I am not struggling to maintain my loss. However, I eat the same way I ate in phase II with a few extra treats.
I think that its good to make up rules for ourselves with limits on different foods, ie: the 2oz. limit I give myself with cheese. I rarely eat flour, even whole grain flour. I do eat a Wasa crsipbread in rye daily but avoid wheat in general. I keep my nut allowance to 2 ozs a day.
My 2 favorites from my very bad eating days of the past are pasta and bagels....so in order for me to not feel deprived and that I'd never have them again, I allow myself to have them once a month...so far so good.
Designing a plan that we can live with is all about what phase II is to me....and I think should be what it is to all of us. In one way, my 18 months doing phase II was a very long time. It gave me a very long time to design a good plan for myself as I kept trying new foods to give myself a wide variety of foods to eat to avoid boredom.
I'm very strict on grains in general and rarely have a cereal at breakfast....but thats just me and some can, I can't.

That is why I switched. I am so looking forward to having an apple without feeling like I blew my diet. ANd I am so enjoying Hummus. ANd I bought all the fixings for bean soups. I really & truely missed them.

I was thinking , that when I can finally have it , I dont think I will for breakfast ( maybe very occasionally). Anytime in the past , if I have cereal for breakfast , Im starving all day . So I am scared to do it now. Tho maybe an oatmeal w/ a scrambled egg wouldnt be so bad. But Im talking cold cereal.

Ya know what scares me? Low fat mayonaisse. I was going to buy some at the store when I went shooping ,but all the lower fat mayo had so much extra weirdness in it that I got scared. Sugar , cornsyrup , chemicals. So I figured , for the amount of mayo I actually eat anyway, I will just use teeny spots of real stuff. Tho I think next kind I buy will be the canola oil one.

Actually, real mayo is what is preferred on SB...use as little as possible when you do use it.
When you eat cereal, as you've surmised, be sure to have a protein like an egg with it....the fat in the egg will slow the digestion.

I started SB on Sept. 7 and I have lost 10 lbs. so far. :)
I would like to lose another 5-10 lbs. Actually my doctor strongly recommended SBD because my cholesteral is high.
I did WW in 2006 and lost weight, but couldn't maintain it and gained some of the weight back, so here I am now, low carbing and loving it! :)

One thing that I realized as I lost my weight was that I would need to find substitutes for my favorite foods if I was going to make this a permanant life style switch. I've been able to do this and now have many favorite foods that fit into the guidleines of the SBD and am happily maintaining my weight loss for almost 2 yrs now.

Hi Everyone,
I am TNbelle (from Tennessee of course), I have been on and off the SBD for about 2 years, but in August of this year (after becoming the largest I have ever been), I decided to take the diet seriously. Over the past 3 months I have lost about 22 pounds. I am so happy. I am approaching my high school weight and it will feel really good to walk across the stage in May (college graduation) looking my absolute best. Now that I am about to enter into phase 3, I feel as if I need more support than ever. Lately, I have been on a lot of websites, and I really enjoyed reading the articles and forums here. I am ready to learn and help!

Thanks everyone - such great support - day 2 and I'm feeling great already, I even think my sugar cravings are gone, although it seems a bit soon for that. I love protein and veggies, not that keen on fruit although I know it is added back in eventually, so I think this is really going to suit me. I love bread, but knowing I can add that back in is good and I usually stay with the Silver Hills bread and bagels, made without flour and from sprouted grains - am looking forward to having that again but funnily enough I'm really not missing it and don't feel any cravings at all.
Now can I ask a silly question?? How do I add a 'quote' to my profile??
I went in and edited my signature and added a quote in there, not sure if that's the way to do it though.

Cute Pooch!
You want to put a line in your signature? First click on UserCP and then find edit signature....add your quote there and hit submit.
If you want to quote, you can use the quote button in the bottom right hand corner of the post that you want to quote or.....you can add theese tags with whatever you want to quote in between:
[quote*]blahblahyadayada[/quote*] just be sure to leave out the* as I only put that in so that it would not show as a quote. ;)
As for the bread.....just go slowly when you get to phase II...flour, even sprouted grain flour, has been known to stop most weight loss dead in its tracks. I'd look to add in whole grain if any rgain at all at first....build slowly to flour later when you are closer to your goal weight.

Hi Katz259:
I'm a newbie to this SB having been on it only 2.5 weeks, I am a carb junkie (or ex CJ now!) and have been for years and years, have struggled with weight, and yoyo'd for years, I can not believe how good I feel on SB - I'm never really that hungry, my carb cravings are gone, so are my sugar cravings .... it's really amazing. Dr. Agatston who designed the program, the cardioligist, certainly did his research.
I used to love my high carb brekky after working out; however, I have switched quite easily to breakfast frittata's (lean bacon, eggs, mushrooms, red peppers, etc. ... I make it in a large square pan and then have a piece heated up for breakfast. Or, I don't mind 1% cottage cheese with some chunks of tomatoes mixed in. Even a boiled egg, or poached egg on a piece of lean bacon with some tomatoe, or egg substitute omlette, or even an egg white and one yoke omlette with veggies in it. Sometimes I just grab a couple of pieces of lean turkey lunch meat and wrap red peppers in it and some bits of part-skim mozzarella, and wrap a boston lettuce leaf around it all and it's pretty good.
Hope that helps somewhat ... it really does work though, and you may find like I did that you really don't miss the carbs.

I stayed in phase I for a total of 4 weeks. I did that because I was not doing it perfectly and wanted my 2 weeks to be perfect before I moved on.
Unless you have orders from your doctor otherwise, it is totally OK to eat eggs daily. I eat about 2 eggs a day...everyday!! Eggs are good for us....yolks too!!

Hi Katz259
Yes, I lost 10 Lb's, in 2.5 weeks and I am now starting phase 2 as I do like to have my steel cut oats for breakfast - but now I have some protein after I eat the oats and find that is working and I'm not hungry. I have the steel cut oats with 1% milk, then an egg or some lean protein or nuts afterwards.
I always make sure I have my mid morning and mid afternoon snacks too, either nuts or lean protein. I am also starting to add one apple back in and have that for my afternoon snack, but I spread a little natural organic peanut butter on each piece and that really makes a huge difference. Usually when I eat an apple it makes me hungry.
I also work out pretty regularly, at the gym on the cardio machines 3 times a week, weights, yoga, and walking my dog. I find I really enjoy this now and also find it much easier to do and have way more energy for exercise now I'm eating SB!
The 'egg' situation has changed now - they used to think it wasn't so good for us to eat too many eggs, even on Weight Watchers they wanted you to limit to three a week; however, recent studies have shown that they are NOT bad for you and they do in fact effect both good and bad cholesterol levels in such a way that it is not unhealthy as they once thought.
Dr. Agatston talks about this in his book - like Judynyc says, unless your doctor tells you not to eat too many for health reasons then they really are ok! :)
I do notice that Dr. Agatston talks about egg substitutes in his recipes though .... not sure why? Perhaps because his patients are mostly obese with heart problems??
*** Judynyc, do you know why Dr. Agatston talks so much in his recipes about the egg substitute stuff?? I use real eggs, not sure I want to bother with the substitute stuff, plus it's expensive!
I buy organic free range eggs - Dr. Agatston does mention that free range eggs, and meats, are better for us if we can afford and get them, so I do try to make most of my diet organic and free range whenever possible.

Hi Everyone! I posted a ton of questions in separate threads, but didn't introduce myself yesterday. I've been on the LC forum since 2004 when I very successfully did Atkins. But slowly I cheated more and more and then all out binged and so............. This time I'm really trying to find something that works as a true lifestyle. I read the SB book last fall, but wanted the "what to look for" list on labels. My DD (a SBer here) kept saying "well it's right there on the forum" & I could never find it. ANYWAY so I kept looking for a different diet. Long story short, I think I'm doing my own plan, but it's really close to SB. LOL Anyway I've lost 3 lbs this week. Have not had time to update my profile, so that's not right at all.
Just want to thank you all for the answers to all the questions I asked. It has been VERY HELPFUL!!!!

Good Morning Everyone
I'm an older "newbie"
I've been here before , but not since Jan 2006.
I was doing Atkins at the time, but I have switched over to SB.
I am married with three kids, daughter-15, son-13, son-9.
So far, I've lost 8 pounds in the first week(Phase I). I didn't stray much at all, except had whole wheat noodles at noodles and company.
I can't wait for Phase 2. :)
Have a good week everyone.
PS- I do keep a journal, so if you want to add to my journal, feel free. I promise I won't go into the South Beach Babes Journal. ;)

Judy--sorry it's been so long. Had health problems and now is back in the game. Where did you say is the best place to find the information for the SB? I thought you had a free website to use? Please let me know. I get sometimes confused and that is where I am now. Thank you again.

Thank you so much Judy. Today is a new day and a new beginning. I have gained so much more weight since I chose not to do anything to lose the weight. I need the encouragement and the disciple that comes with posting. Thank you again.

So much has gone on today. Seems like some days things go well and other days things go to the hills. Judy do you still do the SB? If so how much did you lose all together? Do you keep in touch with anyone from this forum because I have noticed it doesn't seem to be much action here. What got you to do the SB? Have you tried any other lifestyle changes? Sorry so many questions. Doesn't seem like anyone else comes here.

New to the forum. On SB for a few weeks now. I was 174, down to 160. Can't seem to get under 160. Added exercise. I try not to get on the scale, but do it anyway. I have belly fat. I would love to have eggs today. Sick of egg beaters. Can slimquick be taken on this diet? I like phase 1, afraid to go to phase 2. I want to keep losing. Goal weight is 135.

Hi and Welcome!
Good job on your first few weeks! Great progress!! :agree:
I don't know what slimquick is? Is this a diet pill? When we follow the plan, we don't need a diet pill. :agree:
Don't be afraid to add a serving of fruit to your daily food plan...that is all you need to do first week of phase II.
Please click on the link I gave you above and chat to us in the SB check in thread.

I finally got the thread to work, Judy. Thanks. I am increasing my exercise program little by little. I had surgery on my knee last Monday so I am restricted to certain moves but I am incorporating what I can. Thank you for making me feel at home here. Sissytea34 you did a good job. Judy how do I get my name added on the list. I know that I am late in the game but I weigh in on Fridays is that okay? Should I post more on that forum or on this or use both?
