I'm a bit confused, can you explain when counting carbs do you only count the digestable ones? Say for example i eat brocoli that has 10 carbs, do i only count what i have eaten as digestable carbs and how do i know how much is digestable carbs, hope i'm not confusing you.

If the food is from some kind of package, read the label and deduct the fiber from the total carb count. Example would be, let's say, tomato sauce. In the example, it has 10g carbs per 1/2 cup and looking down the list it has 4g of dietary fiber so it has 6g of effective carbs (the carbs that count also written as ECC). It would be 10g carbs - 4g fiber = 6g ECC.
For a food like broccoli (no packaging), go to a nutritional information website (a lot of us here use www.fitday.com - it's free) and it will tell you how many carbs are in a serving and how much dietary fiber. You just do that math :)

Better yet, click up at the top of this page on MY P.L.A.N. It's a fabulous tool and is the best, easiest I've seen on the internet. I've used fitday for years...this is MUCH more user friendly.

Yeah, I was going to mention that but I haven't had time to check it out yet so I didn't want to recommend something I didn't know anything about :p Thanks for the info that it's user-friendly -- when I get some time I'll check it out!

Just remember that FitDay and MyPLAN have ALREADY DEDUCTED THE FIBER from the items. So, you can't deduct it again. :)

What about sugar alcohols- Isn't there something about deducting them also? I really don't know much about them--are they good bad????
I have been going by full carbs not net carbs but I really would like to know and understand it better!

Hold on hold on you Canadians! :) - we do things differently over here.
Broná lives in Ireland where the fibre is already deducted from the total. If it says it has 10g carbs and 5g fibre then that's what it is Broná - you cannot deduct the fibre like our cousins across the pond do.
Just for the record, fitday does not deduct fibre so you can deduct it again.

Dang it, Robert! I'm usually so good about checking where the person is from before posting information. Thanks for catching that :)
And NO, Fitday does NOT subtract fiber, you have to look at the fiber amount (just under the carb total) and subtract it.
As for the sugar alcohols - avoid them as much as possible! If it's a choice between a cheat (real, full-sugar treat) and an LC product with the sugar alcohols and you just can't resist, it's going to be either/or, then have the sugar alcohols but otherwise it's way better to just make your own treats at home. Check out the recipe section, specifically the ziploc ice cream and the chocolate peanut butter cups :yum: When it comes to counting carbs from sugar alcohols, I err on the side of caution and count ALL of the carbs. That sure keeps me from indulging! Not to mention the gastric side effects that some people get :o

Thanks I didn't realize that sugar alcohols were evil!! I haven't come across an instance where I have been near a sugar alcohol but I just wanted to be prepared!!
Thanks again!
