I saw an ad for this URL on two buses today, so I checked out their website.

http://www.grainpower.org/

Looks like the grain/cereal/carbo industry is not taking the low carb "fad" sitting down!!! The site's replete with lines such as:
"What's more, almost a quarter of those surveyed think that carbohydrate restriction is a sensible approach to eating, even when scientific evidence demonstrates the opposite to be true."

I guess someone's have problems selling wonder bread and potato rolls.

The 'hidden persuaders' - scientific evidence demonstrates, but, no references?

Who then is afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Need someon to come to my aid here. Started with new ISP and connection to sites has become extremely slow and hence repetition of message. Cannot find out how to delete the extraneous ones on this site - any advice please?

But know what I don't understand?
ENRICHED grains.

Am I understanding correctly that enriched grains are processed in order to make them richer in nutrients? If I am wrong on this, someone please let me know.

But: If I am correct?

WTH would I want to eat something they have to ENRICH before they give it to me?

I think I will stick with already rich things, like good green veggies and meat! :agree:

And this: (quote from site)
Carbohydrates and Diabetes
The recent low-carb craze has caused a fair amount of confusion among consumers regarding nutrition and healthy eating. The simple fact is, adult-onset diabetes is often caused by obesity - not by carbohydrates. In fact, scientific evidence shows that diets rich in complex carbohydrates, especially whole grains, can help prevent obesity and diabetes, as well as effectively manage diabetes for those with the condition.

Look at that paragraph. See the trick word in there?
CAN. Not DOES. Not MOST LIKELY WILL. CAN.

To me? that's a big fat "MAYBE POSSIBLY" surrounded by BS.

Oh and YEAH, obesity is often the root of diabetes, but what's the root of obesity? I'll take Excess Refined Flours and Sugars for $500, Pat!

On the word can: This is the word I look for when reading *anything* with relation to my health and my life.

Where there's a big bunch of info presented that is all powerful and life saving and woo hoo and all of that? I look for the word "can" because that word in conjunction with all those big, noisy claims, usually will tell me all I need to know.

(Well that and the strong stench of bullsh*t.)

Duparc,
I just thought you were trying to make a point!

Or a couple too many nips of single malt?

Are you from anywhere near Aberdeen? I've been lucky to spend quite a bit of time there over the years with my job. The people, land and single malt are just great.

Hi Grandpa,

Ah! Caught out and couldn't conceal it!

I reside 50 miles south of Aberdeen, at the foot of the south-eastern edge of the Grampian mountains in James Barrie's country (the author of Peter Pan). I reside on the outskirts of the little red brick town of Kirriemuir where the local newspaper is referred to as the 'Kirrie Squeak' which is how we get to know what everyone else is up to. The crime rate is pretty appalling with the occasional broken window, but, the police are on-the-ball; two winters ago they caught two youths throwing snowballs! Yes, I like the single malt but methinks it likes me better so had to put the cork-on-the-bottle as far back as 1974! Having said that, I am still looking for a saviour to show me how to delete posts. Any polite suggestions?

"But We Don't Understand the Health Benefits of Bread
Only about one in eight (12%) respondents believe the statement "Bread contributes to the prevention of serious health conditions" including 9% of women aged 35-44. "

I think I understand.

Go to the store buy a loaf of white bread. Take the entire loaf of bread out of the plastic sack. Put your fresh vegetable in the sack until needed for dinner. After dinner put any trash in the plastic bag. Yea - I see the contribution!

Duparc,
I never made it quite that far south while in Aberdeen, The closest to Kirriemuir would have been Montrose (20 miles?)where we have a facility. I know what you mean about the crime, my small town of 20,000 reported a "drive-by-shouting" last week. They found the kids that were being loud though.

All taken care of. :) Should it happen again, use the "report bad post" icon at the top right hand of the post to let us know that there are duplicates to be deleted. :)

Thanks Liza for the deletions and the information. I feel less embarrassed now that they are gone.
