Bought a couple of the shakes today - currently on offer in Superdrug for 99p each. Haven't tried one yet, because I'm waiting until I've finished my two-week induction - will report back.

In case anyone is interested, SlimFast are giving away free bars via their website (http://www.slimfast.co.uk/index.asp?bhcp=1) :)

I bought a pack of the bars and didn't enjoy them too much, I may give the shakes a try. I miss milk when I'm on very LC.

I'm not sure what this indicates, but my local Sainbury's set up an LC section in the 'healthy foods' aisle (good for them) about a month ago. Now, every single LC product is on special offer to shift them.

I bought a couple of the carb options soups.

I also noticed that they were stocking a new brand of LC Cider which was less than 2 carbs PER LITRE! Pity I don't like cider.

If you go to the slimfast website you can get a low-car/low-cal bar for free.

I fot a chocolate one and could only manage two small bites. I personally found it like chewing sawdust - really unappetising.

Even though I had only two bites I had really bad polyol after effects.

I'll be steering well clear of these

That sounds great, so how does this work? I thought alcohol was banned?

Are carbs included in the 2carbs per litre? Are are you still not allowed this on induction?

LC Cider and LC Lager, I can't wait for the next time I go into a pub and hear some one ask for a low carb snakebite! The bar staff won't know what hit them!

So how does this work then?

I thought alcohol was a energy source in the diet, so it was banned, so the body would stay in ketosis?

Is alcohol included in the carb counts?

Please anyone?

Hi

Alcohols is a no-no on induction as your body burns this before it burns carbs and it can slow down weight loss.

After induction you're OK in moderation, but wine/spirits are generally much lower than beers unless you go for some of the lower carb ones

Ok thanks.

here's a question for the future:

So if i'm on induction, what if i have a unmissable night out, and i have a good old booze up. 8 pints of lager or summat like that.

But the next day, go back to induction foods.

What will happen, will i just loose 1 days burning bodyfat, or will my body go out of ketosis, and i'll have to do induction from the start again. ie 2 days to switch back to ketosis?

If you get trolleyed you'll probably put yourself back a few days but it won't kill you.

I had a big session one week into induction and it didn't harm too much, but the biggest problem is getting the munchies and murdering a kebab.

Think of induction as a magic trick that helps you drop a LOAD of weight (much of it water). If you want it to have maximum impact, follow the 'rules' to the tee.

You don't have to do induction to lose weight - i.e. you can just cut back on your carbs - but it is, in my opinion, the best way of losing a chunk of weight and inspiring you to carry on.

Are you doing Atkins or another plan.

Now that the weight is off, I have at least one glass of wine a night and it doesn't affect me. Also, the occasional binge doesn't have too much of an impact.

The real problem is that if you keep switching from Lc to non-LC you won't give it chance to kick in.

Hope this helps!

Tony

Alcohol is banned on induction. You can reintroduce (straight spirits are zero carbs), but your body uses up alcohol calories before anything else. You liver processes the alcohol first too, so the fat is floating around in the body for rather longer.

There's not much chance of staying in ketosis if you whack back the wallop. Even Marston's resolution would be nearly 10 gram carb per pint. % pints of lager would set you back about 120-130 g carb.

Well i read the atkins books, but i'm using afew low carb items to help me get through induction, cos i can't live on salad and water for every meal.

Eg, i'm having diet coke (1 a can day max.), LC tortilla wraps ( every other day, in my packed lunch), and pork scratchings (nearly everyday, cos i love em :D) which are all not really allowed on atkins induction. and i'm still loseing weight.

I'm only on 10 days in though.

I guess i'm just doing low-carb then as i'm not strickly sticking to atkins methods.

I think i'd rather get by, by losing a small amount of weight and enjoying it. rather than loosing lots of weight and feel i'm missing out.

E.g. if a night out to the pub was aranged, i would go and just excpect to lose no weight for a few days or a week.

I wouldn't go back to my old ways now even after 10 days in.

When i'm thirsty now, i want water, whereas 2 weeks ago i would want fizzy pop.

Funny thing, when I started out over a year ago, when I was thirsty I wanted beer and now I still want beer. It's a funny old world.

LOL Ian.

I recommend if you have a night out having spirits with a diet mixer, it's the lesser of evils. I'm a girly so I have gin and slim line tonic, not carb free but not bad but if you like vodka you could mix that with diet coke, diet lemonade is notoriously hard to find when out but great if your drinking at home. Whiskey and lemonade?

Who mentioned the LC cider? I love cider, where and how much? I can almost taste it now....

I'm looking forward to LC shandy in the summer in the garden too.

I don't mind the advantage bars the hazelnut one is ok, but I tried a shake and nearly threw up :Puke: it was thick and eew yuck just remembering it now makes me want to vomit, but each to their own and I must add before LC I was a bit of a choc shake addict so am really on the hunt for a GOOD alternative.

I am cheesed off at the prices of all these things however. We really get stung on these things.

I don't know if some one has already posted this, but I've seen slim-fast low carb shakes that are made with splenda I've had chocolate and vanilla and they are pretty good.. I'm using those while on phase one of South Beach.... I'm not sure if they offer them in the UK yet.

Are you sure it was an ATKINS-branded RTD shake (as opposed to just a low-carb one by some other company?).

I personally find the Atkins RTD shakes among the best-tasting LC product available (especially chilled), not just shakes. In fact, I think that NON-LC people could easily find them good-tasting... Other brands, I am not so sure.

... on the other hand, the powdered version of Atkins shakes does not seem to taste as well once you make it at home.... and in order for you to enjoy an Advantage bar, you really have to be a Low-carber, in my opinion.

I recently tried the chocolate one and it was pretty good :D Tesco is selling them at 99p, which is a lot cheaper than the Advantage shakes or even than Tesco's own brand low carb protein shakes at £1.20 :)
