Hello I am a gal 68 and doing Atkins second time around . I lost well the first time but now it seems to go much slower. I would like to hear from other people in my age range if everyone has a hard time. Is it the age? I am also on BP meds. that might slow me down.
My menu today: 2 strips of bacon and 1 egg, for breakfast
lettuce,hardboiled egg, tuna,mayo for lunch
meat patty and broccoli for dinner
and water,water,water. :)

hi, i am 65 and have been low carbing since jan 2000 with many ups and downs, i am on BP and thyroid meds. i try to get some exercise in at least 5 days a week.
i do think age and medication does have an impact on your rate of weight loss as well as many years of yo-yo dieting.
over the last 5yrs i have followed CALP, atkins and then protein power for the last 3yrs. i have fallen off the proverbial wagon at times and regained, however the one thing i do know is how much better and healthier i feel when i stick with low carbing and add some exercise. i have lost 30lbs since last august and since jan 1 i am on a 35week personal challenge to lose 1.5 pounds a week. my motivation for this besides my health is my daughter is getting married on labour day in nova scotia (never been to the east coast) and i will be taking a trip through nova scotia,p.e.i. and new brunswick after the wedding which will mean lots of walking so i want to be in shape to handle all the sightseeing:thup:
traveller, you are right, we need lots and lots of water, i usually manage 3-4 litres a day and my goal is 5.
carrottop2-i know what you are saying about the grocery bill but i think that once you get set up with the basics of lc and are no longer buying many of the packaged or what we now call junk type foods you should find lc no more expensive than before. take advantage of whatever food you can buy on sale especially meat and buy in bulk if you can. i don't know if you have other family members to feed as well but often you can incorporate lc food into their diets as well which would help to cut back on the grocery bill. i am a single pensioner on limited income so i understand what you are saying about cost but i want to live long enough to get back all that pension i paid into for over 30 yrs:lol:

nice to meet you both

hi, my dr. doesn't recomend the atkins diet. too much meat so i tried the south beach. i've lost 38 lbs. since the end of january...the only thing i found was, you have to watch the amount of food. sb says to eat till you're not hungry but i stopped losing too. find out how much a serving really is and stick to it. you'll start losing again...good luck!!!

HI, I am 67 yold and I am happy to have found people in my range of age (sorry, my english is not perfect). for those who take medication, yes it can affect your weight loss. I was on medication for pain (Elavil) and it was so difficult. Then, I stop taking it and suddenly it was quite easy to loose again. So, taking medication as to be absolutely necessary. I am on Atkins and becoming quite good at creating new ways of eating and trying new recipes. The book by Dana Carpender "500 low-carb recipes" has helped me a lot. Now, all my recipes books are low-carb since that there is more and more of them on the market. Thank God for that.

Hi all! I'm also an oldster - 68 and counting - and doing Atkins for the ... hhmmmm - 3rd time? Lost weight each time but got off track during maintenance. Now, I've about 15 lbs to lose and I'm in no hurry - I just don't want to gain while I'm working on it!

Does anyone know if there's someplace on-site where we can input a recipe and have it spit out the net carbs per serving? I just made a loaf of bread (yeah - I know :-( ) The recipe includes a cup of Atkins baking mix plus stone ground whole wheat flour and 9-grain cereal. I can't believe it's ALL bad but I'd really like to learn the net carbs per slice.

Hello everyone,

I'll be 60 in December and have found that the older I get the harder it is to lose weight. I have difficulty exercising which doesn't help the situation.

Jes, I too have a wedding coming up in March of 2006 and will need of mother of the groom dress. I've gone looking at what's available in my size and I was not happy. I want desperately to lose at least 30 pounds before the wedding.

Traveller, the first time I was on Atkins' I lost 50 pounds. Kept it off for a while and then let other influence me on my choice of diet and went off the plan. Gained all of my weight back and have been trying unsuccessfully to lost the weight this time. I lose about 10 pounds and then plateau and don't budge for months, get frustrated and quit. I need :help: !

Hi... I am 67 and on meds for heart, bp, thyroid, blood thinners, all of which slows the loss. In addition to all that, I have bad knees, which makes exercise/walking difficult. :tears: Am trying to stave off replacement surgery on both of them by losing 50 lbs. I do walk some on my treadmill at a "slow" pace which helps some. Am hoping that after I lose some more, that will prove easier. :)

Shirea....you don't need carbs. However, if you are eating any berries or veggies, e.g., cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, celery, lettuces.....you will be getting the good carbs which will NOT make you gain weight.

Bad carbs (sugar, potatos, starchy veggies, grains..even whole grains)...the "white" stuff....turn into sugar as soon as you eat them....we really don't need sugar for anything except energy, and since our bodies will use "our" fat for energy if it can't get sugar.....hey...that's the goal, right? :agree:

My wife often says to me, you are not old, you are just long-lived. She says this as she thinks that biologically I am much younger than my chronological age but I seldom take notice of her comment until I come across someone who is younger but is in poor physical shape. Often I see contemporaries who are equally as fit and active as I am so I know that I am not unique. Then I read the posts on this thread to see that some of you are on various medications; for example, as has been quoted: heart, BP, thyroid, and blood thinners, which makes me realise that possibly I am doing better than most at my age.

As has been mentioned in some of my previous posts; 16 years ago I had a quadruple bypass and stopped taking the medication prescribed as it was making me feel unwell. I had a severe post-operative problem affecting my brain and as the medical profession seemed ignorant about its symptoms I took up reading about pharmacology and discovered a medication that effectively controlled my symptoms and after a battle with my GP he reluctantly prescribed the drug (until this point I was obtaining it from foreign sources). I have also convinced my GP to prescribe another drug which controls my apnoea but those are off-label uses and although today I am in remarkably good health, my GP is still convinced that it is in spite and not because of the drugs.

I am healthy and active and do not suffer from any aches nor pains and I continue to have an active libido. I keep my BS under control and my resting BP is around 115/68. Currently I am in the process of redecorating the kitchen and removing a tiled floor (very hard task) and replacing it with other tiles. Last week I redecorated a bedroom and laid a laminate floor so physically I do not have problems. Indeed, I continue to believe that I have future. If I have any problem with age it is due my daughters who insist on treating me as if I am old!

In 10 days time I will be 75 but going on for 57 (or maybe younger)!

Our bodies are made of saturated fat and protein and guess what its needs for replacement purposes? Stick to the LC diet; your doictor will probably have a heart-attack when you tell him/her but, you won't!

Duparc, you look great for a gentleman about to be turning 75. Sometime you have to give your doctor a nudge in the right direction. I'm happy to see that you took matters into your own hands when you were prescribed a medication that was making you feel unwell.
Keep on doing just what you're doing. Your story is inspiring.

For information purposes, the picture (in place of the avatar) was taken last September at a place called Crinan, a few miles south of Oban on the west coast of Scotland. During the stay there it rained almost continuously and the good lady and I encountered our heaviest fall of rain ever. What the picture effectively hides, of course, is my 'curly' top! I awake every morning feeling good about myself and about this 'immaculate conception' we call the world and on which we live. It is a pity that there is so much disharmony in society; people never seem to learn. We are trapped, in what Shakespeare called, 'The seven ages of man'. Thanks for the compliment; better still, thanks for noticing! (Time now to take the lady-of-the-house her morning cuppa and arouse her with a gentle kiss to the lips and that's what life is all about; caring, and caring deeply)!

I can well imagine the headlines: old-age pensioner male writes best-selling romantic novel! Probably would get into the Guinness Book of Records!

Incidentally, to my knowledge, everyone to whom I write to socially keeps my letters. My late wife of 47 years of togetherness kept all my letters in a small bedside drawer but just before her passing she destroyed them; I wonder why?

My wife of today (we've been together for 6.5 years and married 3 years ago) has had a very traumatic life from birth, that was, until we met. She often put her feelings into verse and currently I am assisting her to compile an MSS. Here is an extract of 2 verses from one of her poems written just prior to our meeting, one balmy, starry-filled night, at Stirling on 28 August 1999 :

"Had I someone I could love,
who would love me in return.
Someone who could take me
from the depth of the ocean
to as high as the clouds
to make my passion burn.

"Someone who could overlook
the scars of yesteryear
and gaze at my beauty from within
to behold me, in all my aged glory.
Someone, who would see me, at last..."!

As she is hopeful that her verse might be published it would be judicious, meantime, not to reveal more, but, I suspect those same sentiments of hers describes the feelings and desires of many on this thread.

I think with your life experiences, you could much better express what love truly is all about. :)

My late wife of 47 years of togetherness kept all my letters in a small bedside drawer but just before her passing she destroyed them; I wonder why?

I wonder why too? Maybe she felt the thoughts and feelings expressed in them were for her and her alone and she didn't want anyone else reading them. :)

Duparc, you have been blessed to have two wonderful women in your life. The two verses from your wife's poem are beautiful. Everyone wants to be loved unconditionally by the person who means the world to them. They were both lucky to have found that unconditional love in you.
I would think the reason your first wife burned her letters just before her death was because they were too precious to her to leave behind. I'm sure she took both your love and her letters away with her safely tucked inside her heart.

Duparc....I agree with the others. Your two wives are very fortunate ladies. Would there were more men (and women) like you. Thanks for your contribution to my life. If your wife's poems are published, please let me know. I would purchase a copy. In the event she doesn't find a publisher smart enough to recognize her talent and value, perhaps a website of her own? It would be a shame for others not so talented to be deprived.

Lovely compliments from lovely ladies but, come-on ladies, what about Bergetta's thread; please, let us not abandon it. Can we provide Bergetta with the support and advice she so desires and probably desperately needs? The variety of medications prescribed to her is of some concern which, of course, is beyond our specialist interest to dieting. Certainly, if she were to ramp-down the carbohydrates in her food and increase protein and fats (saturates and monounsaturates) and avoid all polyunsaturates which are effective immune-suppressants and avoid too transfats, then she would probably discover a reduction to both weight and ill-health problems. Having attempted numerous forms of dieting over the years I found Atkin's style to dieting more appropriate.

Janice30
Sun, Feb-26-06, 09:42
Bergetta, I have no knowledge of how the Protein Power Plan, but I have tried South Beach and it didn't work as well as Atkin's for me. In fact Atkin's is the only plan I use now. Having tried most of the other diets out there the only one that truly works for me is Atkin's.
I've lost 25 pounds since the beginning of December on Atkin's. It's the only diet that I feel well on while dieting. I don't consume huge amounts of fat, I tend to stick with the leaner cuts of meat and the good fats. We also eat a lot of green vegetables, and salads.
My husband who is 61 and has had a double triple (6) bypass surgery six years ago is also on Atkins' and is doing well. My husband is on a blood thinner and other heart medications. My husband's cholesterol and blood pressure are better when he is on Atkin's than when he eats a low fat, high carb diet.
I am 60 and I don't take any medication. I tend to go more for the natural approach to wellness.

Duparc, your advice to Bergetta is right on target. You are an inspiration to all of us.

Have a great day everyone.

Bergetta....that's pretty much the Protein Power Plan too. Since Atkins is working for you guys and you are familiar with it, stick to it. On PP we do drink a lot of water...although, I "think" Atkins recommends this too, doesn't he? PP recommends 1/2 an ounce for every pound you currently weigh.

I have a dear friend who often emails quotes about aging. Your post reminded me of his most recent offering:

I am still every age that I have been. Because I was once a child, I am always a child. Because I was once a searching adolescent, given to moods and ecstasies, these are still part of me, and always will be... This does not mean that I ought to be trapped or enclosed in any of these ages...the delayed adolescent, the childish adult, but that they are in me to be drawn on; to forget is a form of suicide...

Far too many people misunderstand what “putting away childish things” means, and think that forgetting what it is like to think and feel and touch and smell and taste and see and hear like a three-year-old or a thirteen-year-old or a twenty-three-year-old means being grown up. When I'm with these people I, like the kids, feel that if this is what it means to be a grown-up, then I don't ever want to be one. Instead of which, if I can retain a child's awareness and joy, and “be” fifty-one, then I will really learn what it means to be grownup.

Most of the problem was that they weren't really into LC and since I can't have sugar or anything with gluten I could never find a plan that I really liked.

When I used try WW it was always so traumatic to me that anything that smacks of deprivation just sends me into an emotional tailspin. I find that I really feel at home here and there is so much info, falling down and getting up again, and successes, that there is always someone to inspire me and keep me going--and always someone here who knows how I feel.

Hi Peg. You should go and get rechecked by your doctor or find a new one. You don't have high BP. Mine was about 130/80 when they took me off the meds.
Different drs have different opinions, of course.

I bet you don't need the celebrex either. For the last two weeks, I was out of celebrex, just went to the dr today, as a matter of fact to get a renewal for it. Well, come to find out, I really didn't need it at all. I've been fine without it and even my bad knees are 90% better. The dr was surprised, even. I've been doing a bit of walking, so I guess that did it, along with losing 16 lbs.

thanks Spuydurgurl I have a regular scheduled Dr appointment in a few weeks..I haven't seen him since I lost the weight..I must say though I lost it all on Kimkins and in 3 months which we now know wasn't a good thing..but the weight is off...

Just goes to show you, there's no fool like an old fool..I blindly followed that diet and ate 500 calories a day for most of it...

Hi Peg....
what's kimkins? And only 500 cals a day! Yikes! Were you starving all the time?
I bet when you see your dr he will take you off those meds....
Yesterday I had foot surgery...so I am hobbling around.....yesterday was a mixture of pain and fog, but today I am a lot better, thank God!
Have a good OP day....I will, cause' it's too hard to get to the refridgerator! lol

Hi Peg....I am back to normal already. Throwing the crutches away....they slowed me down too much. I only had about 2 days of slowing down.....Yay!
I lost 2 more lbs, too. Probably because of all the exercise in using those
crutches....but they really helped me in the beginning.
How are you doing?

Hi.

I'm 71 - will be 72 in August. Only my ninth day on my program, but today, I feel a little better. Doctor diagnosed me as pre-diabetic on Friday, and yesterday, I got the shakes, so made a drink out of an apple, some blueberries and a piece of celery and that seemed to help. Other than a little cramping the first couple of days, I haven't really had a bad time with this. I feel like my mind is clearer and today, I actually feel a little lighter, although the scale hasn't budged for the past five days or so.

Went shopping today and it is fun reading labels and only choosing the stuff you know will work. I ended up getting myself a fresh shrimp and "lobster" salad with lettuce and some dressing. Only 2 grams of carbs net. I only used the dressing to dunk the shrimp in. I was hungry so ate it in the car before I left the parking lot. I feel so happy with myself. Now to make myself exercise.

I've been heavy most of my adult life - lost and gained anywhere from 20-110 lbs at a time on almost every diet out there, but never kept the weight off. This time, I can't play around any more as I don't want to get sick and I'm not getting any younger.

So happy to find this site.

Hi everyone :) I lost this thread and was hppy it popped up for me now :D
Hi Krosman. I hear you! None of us can afford to wast the time we have playing games with our bodies now. For the life of me I have no idea where the time has gone to.

I'm a very restricted income too so I know what you guys are referring to. Moved here thinking I would continue working. We bought this OLD place and with the income I used to make we would have had the wholeplace renovated in a snap. Go figure I would become totally disabled and not work one day after the move. SS disc. checks do not go far. Also have the realty crunch. Bought the farm next to us too and figurred that the Sale of my condo would more than easily cover that a few months after the purchase. Have been sitting with the place for one year now. YIKES!
But at least I can move around now pretty well once I started to listen to the body. That's what we all have to do isn't it?
Well, hope to see you folks again and chat.

Hi. Hope you're doing well.

I know about the money crunch. I was working and sailing along and spending money on cruises and things, including a pedigree pup, like it was everlasting - I'd plan to work another 3 years. And four days after I bought the pup, I was laid off from the mortgage business. At 71 and in the real estate business, there aren't many opportunities right now to find work. I am on unemployment, but got hit with big car repair bills and some other stuff, and now find out the unemployment runs out in a couple months. What to do as I have tons of bills??? Oh well, it'll work out one way or the other. I have social security but that isn't enough to cover everything.

And the weight loss has stalled. Every morning, I think I feel thinner so I must have lost, but wrong. I guess I should expect this at my age. At least on this program, I don't get those hunger pangs and start to panic.

Going to be a warm day here. Hope you are doing well.

I'm 61 and am very glad that I switched to the healthy low-carb lifestyle 5 years ago. I'm off all medications and feel great. I retired a couple of years ago and the reduced stress was really a great feeling.

My older brother died last October from complications of diabetes. I believe that if he had switched to low-carb eating and not followed the ADA high-carb, low-fat advice, he would be alive today.

One advantage of being retired is that I now have time to fix up the house. Of course the downside is that my income is much less, so I have to do the work a little at a time. My main project this summer will be to refinish the wood floor in the dining romm and living room. The floor needs to be sanded, re-stained, and top coated. Because of switching to low-carb eating, I no longer feel the need to take afternoon naps, so I can do things all day and get things done faster.

We have plywood flooring now that covers the rotten plank flooring we discovered, and we need a ceiling in the 2 front rooms as well as walls! Wasn't kidding about this old house. We found it to be SIX 100 yr old cabins joined under one roof.UGH!
Kathleen, I'm sorry about you troubles. You have wonderful memories and things will turn around. Markets will be back soon ( I PRAY) and someone with all your experience will land a good posititon.

Hi everyone. Being a newbie here, I just found this thread while exploring. I am 66 but surely that number is a mistake! I've never had a huge weight problem, the highest I ever weighed was 161 and off to WW I went, and lost 32 pounds. Of course I slowly fell into old ways, and now seem to have a lifestyle of dieting. Did Atkins many years ago and decided it was time to give it another try. With the internet, there is so much info available now, and thank heavens I found this site. Google is a wonderful thing. With the recipes offered here, I am eating well and never hungry. No suffering of deprivation. Even though I only want to lose 20 pounds to get back to my skinny self, I have already lost 6 pounds in the first two weeks. Its a wonderful thing. :cheer:

Hi Faro :) I did the old Atkins and had great success, but the new version wasn't as good for me. Eventually I wandered back to the old one and stay on the induction foods and use total and not the net carb stuff. I also was thrilled to fing this forum and got off the other site..too many stressed out folks there:D
You won't have prolems with only 20 to go! I can't wait until I get that close too!

Hi Peg... I hope your doc reduces the BP meds and he most likely will. But don't be surprised if you are weaned off. Are you are still on them and are taking the BP while on these?
If you are, then you may be in the high range without them.
I dislke any medication but sometimes they are needed. BUt as you lose more weight, then you may get off everything.
Good luck :)

Hi,

I've not been here for a very long while, but just wanted to see if this thread was still continuing. I am 68, and I truly don't believe it, because I still feel so young at heart.
I'm certainly no stranger to low-carb... (Atkins). It has certainly helped to keep my weight in check over the years.
However, in the last two years, I've been trying to get 15 lbs. off, and have lost 9 of those. SLOW is an understatement, but I KNOW it can be done.

It is very difficult, but not impossible to find like-minded people who are on a low carb WOE.

I certainly hope this post will trigger more comments to keep this thread alive.

I am in Pace, Fla. right outside Pensacola.
Have you all been on low carb long? I am new to it, just began a few days ago. Been online today checking out the Atkins sites and getting his induction plan and the other phases of his plan to. Also got a list of foods for induction to and I plan to put that on front of my fridge....
I was told I needed to read his book on induction but I see he has everything right here online and you can print it up. But I amy buy his book anyway when I go to the store.
Doing good with my eating so far. For breakfast I had a egg and bacon and lunch was a tuna salad with lettuce and some tomato.
I bought me some splenda and got rid of my sweet n low for my ice tea.
I do drink coffee and have not given that up because I need it in the mornings to wake me up. Do you think It will hurt me losing any?
I have drank it all my life so that may be hard to give up.
I do not drink very many diet soda at all but I do need to drinkl more water I know that.
I started a journal, there is not much in it yet but I promise there will be because I will post in it regularly. So if you want to keep check on my progress you can find me there.

Hi ya'll! I was in South Florida. Hubby born in Boca Raton and lived there his entire life. I couldn't deal with the high taxes and huricanes and we moved to South East Alabama... just barely out of FL so the weather is great, no taxes to worry about and fantastic people!
Sissy, I posted the entire Induction stuff on your journal. I have been living Atkins for so many years and it is different for everyone..and he HAS changed it drastically over the many years I have been around it. I would say drop the soda..you MUST have way more than the 64 oz of PURE water for this. Ketosis puts those nasty ketones in your system and they do need to be flushed out bigtime.Biggest help is weighing everything and FItDay is fabulous. I don't bother with a journal just the Fitday.com for everything and it is free!
Gotta get going and get a cake decorated... yep, I sell baked goods! What a hoot! The more I bake the more I lose :D
Tomorrow I need an anniversary cake...making it with bride and groom clowns with the pictures of their faces on the bodies...SO CUTE!

Sissy I am no stranger to low carb. I was first introduced to Atkins back in the 70s. It's always been the WOE I go back to when I get in too much trouble in the food department.

I've NEVER given up my coffee, and lost very well. There are many who don't give it up, and I've never had a problem. Of course I do drink it black, so if you don't drink it black, I still think that's OK, as long as you use cream.
As far as the sweeteners go, I rarely, if ever, use them. Just be careful with what you use.

I am following induction and not eating anything that is not on its list of foods to eat. This is day five for me. So far I feel I have been doing real good.
My stomach was loose for a few days but its ok now. I guess its the change in my diet.
I feel like I have already lost some but don't have any scales to weigh myself yet. I will get some though when I make it to the store.
I know I have gotton rid of alot of water weight because I do not feel all bloated like I was.

I have tried all diet plans there is but never tried low carb for some unknown reason. I learned about it from a article I was reading in a magazine. So I got on line and checked it out. It was about Atkins low carb.
I checked out alot of other low carb boards to but thought this one sounded like it would be the best for me.

Hi folks :) I too drink coffee and it is fine...I believe the cauton is for more than 1-2 cups a day and everyone is different.
If you haven't tried the DaVinci SF flavored syrups, you are in for a treat! I use the Irish cream and Praline a lot, enjoy the Kalhua and vanilla too. Theu have NO carbs since they use liquid splenda and no bulk...no calories and no sugars... really good stuff!
I love the older Atkins becasue it doesn't restrict the cream like the 2002 does. I really love my cream!
I also love this forum. I spent many many months on the official site and there is just no breathing room for individual ideas. It is either 2002 to the letter or nothing. Some people are rather nice there but I am very happy to be here. I have learned so much and did find what works for me. The higher fat, lower protein, very lc and little veggies.
Glad to have found you both :D too!
Have got to go and get the blueberry crop paths mowed. Tomorrow I trim around the grape arbors, transplant the veggies to their permanent home...TTYL :D

Hi:
I'm 68, have just finished 3 weeks of induction and only lost 7 pounds....getiing discouraged and have started drinking a glass of red wine a night. :yum:....is it possible to lose and drink too?

I feel that I was following the program pretty strictly, but also take BP meds, and thyroid also. I'm recovering from a hip replacement I had to give up golf and the gym,(gained 40 pounds) but I'm hoping to ease back into some physical activity soon.

I am a believer in LC, I know it's the healthy way to go, but I wish it would go a little faster. Any help appreciated. I'm so glad there is an over 50's group, I think we share a lot of the same physical problems.

I have been on LC for the past two months. Lost about 4 lbs on Atkins, then switched to SB and lost about 8, but am now yoyoing up and down - yesterday I was up 5 lbs. I, too, have a thyroid problem and the doctor has said she thinks I am pre-diabetic, but I tested my blood sugar and it never got very high. I know this is the only way for me regardless of whether I ever lose or not. I just know that I feel better. I used to be able to lose 10 lbs the first week of a diet, but no more. I told my MD I was doing SB yesterday and he was very happy about that. My blood pressure was perfect considering my weight.

A lot of my problem is the fact that I don't have any counter space in my little bitty kitchen so if I can't nuke it or eat it the way it comes, I don't make it. I hope the time comes where I can move into a place with a larger kitchen - more counter and cabinets and a dishwasher under the counter instead of on the counter where mine is now. It gets so frustrating as I see so many recipes I would love to try, but I have no room to put the mixing bowls, etc. Oh well, this, too shall pass.

I get a little depressed and end up eating whatever carbs I have in the house - got into a package of Rye Krisp last night - so when they are gone, they won't be replace. Now my larder only has good food left.

Even now in a larger kitchen I run out of room! One way I make room is by putting a cutting board on the stove burners so I can cut veggies and such on it. Another way to make more room is to put a cutting board over the sink. Wish we all had big kitchens!:agree:

We have plenty of room in our kitchen to chop and cut things.
I like a big kitchen with a table in it. I like to sit at the table and do all my chopping though.
We do have a formal dining room to but it never gets uses, maybe during the holidays thats all.
We eat out on the patio out by the pool area most times for supper in the evenings.
Our children are married now so I don't have to cook for kids anymore. Can now sit down and relax when I eat.

But putting a chopping block on top of the stove is a good idea when space is limited.

The scale has been reflecting a weight gain for me these last couple of days, and I'm not fretting at all over it cause I know I've been eating well. I haven't been drinking my 64 oz. of water, simply because I can't force it down when I'm not thirsty. I've been on the run these past couple of days too, so won't drink when I'm traveling for obvious reasons.

I am eating right, at least I think I am, but it does not seem like I am losing much, maybe a pound or two every now and then but thats all.
I cannot get all my water in either Flowersoul. I have been buying those little flavor packets to put into my water and they make it drinking alittle easier. I never have been a big water drinker anyway.
I liked my diet pepsi but I have given them up to see if it woud help my fibromayolga. I have been off them for a month now.

But, the pounds crept back on and it seems like now I just can't get enough motivation to really go at it fully. I didn't even know this thread existed until yesterday. Okay, my BIG problem is this: I'm single and 'looking'. So I start a diet, because I want to look better, even feel better. Then I think, 'but if Mr. Right comes along, I DO NOT want looks to be the attraction'. So then I deliberately sabotage my diet, so that if anyone were to be attracted to me, I'd know it was for inner beauty. UGH! I'm not sure how to get myself out of this mode of thinking. Thoughts anyone?

There is nothing wrong with looks being the attraction. How is a person expected to be able to find your inner beauty if there is no physical attraction to start things off?

Hi Ya'll...have had some really intense things going one so been off this.
Hi to Cats and welcome. Sorry I have been gone Flowersoul and Sissy. Hi Dodger.
Motivational needs here? This is the right place. May I add ( of course I will) that Cats, you need to find what it is you are afraid of in having a relationship that is undoing your plans. Your self esteem needs some bolstering up there kid!
Being overweight is an issue by itself and some are heavy as a means to protect themselves from getting hurt." If I am fat then no one will want me and so I can't be hurt them them....." that is so often the case.Padding the heart with the padding we hate.
As for looking great to find someone, sorry but I don't think that is important. Look around you. Some really plain and unattrative people out there having found wonderful relationships. Beauty IS more than skin deep and the right guy will see it.The person that only is attracted to arm candy isn't the person that will last in the hard times. Time to share here:
I was 117 lbs when I married at almost 18 in 1964...was pretty darned cute. Was also in a horrid marriage.( for 37 yrs).got preg;blossomed to 209lb. lost the weight and got prego again almost 4 yrs later and was 214lb. discovered if I kept the fat, I kept him away too. it worked. He wasn't in love with me enough to see my heart. just my fat. I lost the weight again had gained to 320 and dropped 190 pounds in one year. it didn't change anything. Got divorced, had gained a little back and had all the sagging stuff from the loss. Met a guy when not even loooking and certainly not cute at that point in my life. That was June 29,2001.We married Aug.17th 2002. He is 17 yrs younger and handsome. He never saw my age or my flab. He only saw my heart. I am his HS sweetheart as he calls me... Don't sweat the flab. Go out and have fun. Men are attracted to the personality and the heart. I will admit that I eventually did have the excess removed ( caused skin infections from that apron) and flab is gone on tummy..legs are another story!
FInd yourself and get happy with YOU! Then the rest just doesn't really matter. ( yes, I am a retired clinical specialist pshchiatric nurse here)

Hi there Cricket! Good to meet you!
Yes, I know all you say is true. Although I hadn't thought of it as deep down trying to avoid a relationship all together. That MAY be the case.
Well after trying on clothes yesterday, I have decided I HAVE to get back to diet & exercise. - Problem is, it may as wait until I get back from vacation.
What exercise programs are you others on?

Flowersoul
Fri, Jun-20-08, 19:31
Cats,

My exercise program consists of some light weight lifting and it only takes me about 30-45 minutes every other day to to this, and I am very careful because I've had injuries in the past, and want to avoid any more.

I have an Air-Climber that I got from HSN for about $100 that I absolutely LOVE. It affords me a good lower and upper body workout and provides some cardio along with it. I can only do about 5 minutes on the thing; yes, I'm out of shape. My dil, who goes to the gym regularly, got on it and said she couldn't last 20 minutes on it, and that it is indeed a good workout, even if for only 5 minutes a day.

The only thing I know I am not doing according to plan is having a glass of wine now and then. It is actually allowed on OWL, but I know you burn the alcohol first before anything else. So I feel guilty when I do have a drink! It is beginning to seem that I will never get past this plateau or ever reach the top of the OWL ladder. Nice to meet everyone. Judy

Hi Judy,

Oh I do understand about those plateaus. I've been holding steady for quite awhile now, and I don't deprive myself at all. Of course, it's all low carb with the exception of an occasional dinner out, etc., but for the most part, I do stay about 40-70 grams of carbs per day.

I am tossing around the idea of going lower on my carbs (about 30) to shock my system again, but don't like the thought of see-sawing. Have to think about it.

I'm a 61-year older who has returned to Atkins because I'm just plain tired of being overweight. Nearly always heavy as a child and young adult, I found Dr. A in the mid-late 70's and maintain a perfect size 4-6, without effort, for over 10 years. Then I moved to Dallas and my new coworkers were constantly harassing me about my "strange" eating habits. I ignored them all --- but when I remarried in 1991, I started "cooking for 2" again and the weight started to pile on. Diagnosed hypothyrotic in 1994, synthetic thyroid FINALLY stabilized ~ 100/50 mcg on alternating days. BUT --- the weight gain has been horrendous (high-carb diet like my Type A hubby) and I never felt quite "right" although I was never really sick during those years.

Anyway, I'm back with a vengeance and ready to do what it takes to get with the program. And this was the impetus: Darling Hubby and I are going on a vacation later this summer and we decided it was OK for me to pick up a few new clothes. We went shopping ... and it was an absolute disaster! After 3-1/2 hours, DH said --- with an absolutely straight face --- "Sweetheart, you must absolutely stop gaining weight. And you should also lose some weight ... a lot of it!" I have been in the mid-150's for nearly 10 years and this was the first time he's mentioned it! Of course, he weighs 3# more than the 162# he carried when he graduated college in 1966!

My endrocrinologist left practice a couple of years ago, but before he did he suggested Atkins as the only way for a hypothyrotic to lose weight and keep it off. And that was the plan he used ... I saw him at Sam's Club the other day and he still looks great --- unlike me.

So here I am again ... 8 days ago I instituted "Induction Light;" I'm down 4#, and my Keostix are mauve. I guess I'm on my way. Everything I've read (including lots of support sites like this one ) tells me that this will be more difficult than my initial success with Dr. A and that the pounds will drop more slowly because of the medication I take (Dr. A. says the same thing, I just re-read his book).

But as I tell my sons and anyone who asks me, "I can do anything, I'm over 37." And I can do this too, as can you. Send me an e-mail and we can chat often. Oh, and the "shoveit116" name is for my attitude and my goal weight!

I think I just get down like that because I hurt from all my arthritis I have and I cannot seem to lose this weight on me so my knees will feel better. I feel if only I could lose this weight some of this pain would go away.
But I will be ok, I usually come out of my down timkes pretty fast.....

my big No No is to eat something sweet be in l/c or not... it does a number on me big time... most of the time it will make me start to eat every no no available to me at the time! any one else do this? I just got home from a bike ride to the coast we left yesterday morning and decided to spend the night. Had a blast, I did great on the food and hope to see what the scale says tomorrow! I am keeping my fingers crossed any of you like riding with your hubby on a Motor cycle ?????

If I eat sometjhing like cake or ice cream it will only make me want more. I have no will power at all when it comes to sweets.

We use to ride bikes alot around our neighborhood a few years back before my arthritis in my knees got to bad to ride anymore. I still get on my stationary bike some but it makes my knees hurt bad to. I was always into sports alot when I was younger and up until a few years ago.
I played womens soft ball, I bowled for thirthteen years on a womens bowling leagues. I love boating and and boggie boarding and sking some to.
I played tennis to with a few friends of mine.

Just got these bad knees and had surgery on one already and now my doctor is talking surgery on them again . The arthritis in them have destroyed the bone. Once when I use to skate alot, I fell and busted up my right knee and thats the one I had surgery on and it has always hurt me but I never let it stop me from my sports until now.
I use to be very active and stayed alot slimmer than I am now, but over these last ten years I have become so inactive and have gained alot of weight to and went through a bout with depression real bad also.

Now I am trying to lose it again and get my knees fixed so I will not be in all the pain I stay in everyday from them.
When and if ever they get better I am going to do the things I always loved to do.

Well, over the weekend I met my motivation to look good. :)
So on Monday I ordered the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred DVD that some here are reporting amazing results with. It arrived already yesterday. It's a killer & I only did maybe 1/4 of it and was laying on the floor panting the other 3/4 - but I'm feeling it in the love handles today, so I'll keep trying. Also have been on serious induction, without a cheat this week.

:help: Hi:

Has anyone in this group been on Metformin for insulin resistance? (I have posted this in another forum) without much response. but wondered if it had helped anyone here or not. I am 68 and doing Induction with only a small loss so far (3 lbs ) in 10 weeks.) My MD thought the Metformin would help. I've read that it has some bad side effects, but so far in one week I have had no problem.

I would also like more info about the DVD mentioned on this thread. What kind of exercise is it?

I would also like more info about the DVD mentioned on this thread. What kind of exercise is it?

I am ATTEMPTING to do the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred which some have raved about in the Exercise forum under Beginner/Low Intensity. I have made it through the warm up (yes, even that is almost more aerobic than conventional warm up) and through the 1st couple exrcises. The idea is to keep moving the whole 20 min. - no breaks. I am so out of condition, it will take me a while to work on to that.

Thanks for the info. I will check out the exercise forum. I had a hip replacement in December and I'm having a problem getting my body back into my old gym routines, hence a 30 pound weight gain!

I'm still not sure if the metformin has ever helped anyone to start losing when they were insulin resistant. At least it's good to know it hasn't hurt!

"My Younger Days"

When I was in my younger days,
I weighed a few pounds less,
I needn't hold my tummy in
to wear a belted dress.

But now that I am older,
I've set my body free;
There's comfort of elastic
Where once my waist would be.

Inventor of those high-heeled shoes
My feet have not forgiven;
I have to wear a nine now,
But I used to wear a seven.

And how about those pantyhose-
They're sized by weight, you see.
So how come when I put them on,
The crotch is at my knees?

I need to wear these glasses
As the prints were getting smaller;
And it wasn't very long ago
I know that I was taller.

Though my hair has turned to silver
and my skin no longer fits,
On the inside, I'm the same old me,
Just the outside's changed a bit.

"Poem for Senior Citizens"

A row of bottles on my shelf
Caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
Goes to my heart so it won't stop.
A little white one that I take
Goes to my hands so they won't shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
And tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
Or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all
Go to my blood so I won't fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright
Prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I'd really like to know..........
Is what tells each one where to go!

I regret that I didn't ever get down to the local pool and find out the lap swim hours and senior rates earlier. Something I was going to do all summer. Now, with only about 10 more open pool days, I finally got there. I LOVE to swim, but as proven last night, my endurance is awful. Can hardly do a lap without flipping over to float on my back. BUT now I've got the desire to do it back, I'm going to look into another option (local juvinile prison facility has an indoor pool and a few public use hours).

Hello everyone. I am the one that started this thread seems so long ago. I used to come here for help when I was on Atkins, I used the name traveller cannot remember my password and anyhow did want to start everything new with my new Diet Southbeach. So much have happened since I started this I lost my husband of 52 years. Tried low-fat diets but just gained ,hurt my back ,gained more, could not walk for quite a while. Now I am feeling pretty good again. Older and wiser I hope. I am surprised this thread is still going. I am now 72 and still trying to lose the weight I put on when I stopped smoking in 1980 and also quit my work and found the computerworld. I do love my computers. I travel a lot still and my laptop always comes with me.
Right now I am in the process of buying a house, sold mine and bought one with less stairs. I am still on Phase 1 and don't really crave anything except the toast in the morning. I used to have one every day and that is a no-no now. Well I thought I pop in and say Hello to all of you.

My blood sugar was elevated some and my doctor put me on some pills for it so I am hoping they will work so I don't ever have to go on insulin shots. I go next monh for more blood work so I am hoping the results will be better than they were tha last time.
I also have bad arthritis in my hips and knees to and I know losing the weight will help them to. So you see why I am serious about losing my weight.
Are you doing the Atkins plan to?

"SENIOR CITIZEN MOMENT'

Apparently, a self-important college freshman attending a recent football
game took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to
him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his
generation.

He said "You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one", the
student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. "The young
people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man
walking on the moon. Our space probes
have visited Mars. We have nuclear energy, ships and electric and
hydrogen cars, cell phones, computers with light-speed processing...and
more."

After a brief silence, the senior citizen responded as follows:
"You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were
young........so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little BRATS, what are
you doing for the next generation?"

The applause was amazing....... :D :D

GOOD EVENING!
Sorry to hear about your arthritis I have some also in my back and knees it is no fun. I have been so busy packing and organizing everything , I am moving next month. So much to do. I am trying to lose weight and to stay active as my Dr. told me. I volunteer driving people to their Dr's or Hospitals and that keeps me quite busy so many who cannot drive or haven't got a car. Driving a blind lady next week to the big city for a eyecheck-up. I know I should exercise more but I am usually so tired when I come home that I barely can keep my eyes open for eating dinner and watching the News. I would need a nap but I guess the people would look at me funny if I start snoring while we wait for the dr's  Well i have a free day tomorrow. Well - I know you're all going to look at me like I'm crazy - but I plan to wear my bikini top this weekend. :) I'm just going to wear short shorts with it, 'cause there's no way this belly can go public. And it won't really be all that public, just a private pool. For me, that's being pretty brave. But I do believe it's easier to exercise the better I feel about my body. I'm hoping it will motivate me to get to the point where I could wear it with the bikini bottoms if I wanted to.

Sorry to hear your arthritis is so bad. Is it worse with certain weather patterns? Mine is, for sure. Do you have any simple stretchs you can do? When I'm disciplined enough to do them, that usually helps me - however, I totally understand not feeling up to even doing stretchs.
I walked the track last night. Decided I really have to get one of those little walking CD player things, as it's very boring walking round and round. Have asked different ones if they would like to be my walking partner, but most of my friends are retired and therefore they exercise at the senior center in the morning.

Hello. I am so busy with packing and calling all places to change my address. How I hate the press 1 for english press 2 to do this 3to do that and then you wait and wait.... but I think I got most of the calls done. Went out with my daughter yesterday and had chicken for lunch but then did something stupid we shared a piece of cake for dessert. I guess I just have to shrug it off and do some extra walking on the treadmill lol. Sorry that you are feeling so sore Sissy is it because of the weather? I hope you will feel better soon. I had a piece of cake at a wedding last week. For special occasions, I bend the rules.

I found out later that one layer was made gluten free so that the brides step-father could also have a piece.

I to liked the lst one, because I see so many cars just like mine that I have to look at them to see if there is anything of mine I notice so I won't get into the wrong car.
Now I keep a Angel hanging on my mirror so I can tell my car from others. I drive a pewter color Saturn and there must be hundreds of there here where I live.

Do any of you subscribe to the Arthritis today magazine or any of the other Health magazines? They sure do have alot of good information. I never got any before now and sure am enjoying reading them. Guss thats a sign I am getting old!!!!!

We are all getting ready for another Hurricane hitting near us so have to go out and get more hurricane supplies, are any of you in its path to?

HI Sissy :D ANd there is always: you know you are growing old when your back goes out more than you do!

Do I read Arthritis Today? I AM arthritis today, yesterday and tomorrow! All kidding aside I am sure it is a good reference. Actually, drwoning myself in tons of water has actually rid most all of my arthritic problems, I read a report about that after I had seen these results on myself so I guess it was not my imagination. Being a nurse for 30+++ yrs I have learned a lot of interesting things and had to change my lectures too often with all the new information discovered over those yrs. I was forced into retirement by my physical situation but I still spend hours each day in research of health matters.

Hello, is anybody out here over 65 (+/-10 years) who needs to shed a quick 100 pounds. Well, that is what I have to do. I guess I don't have to do it, but if I don't do it the quality of my life is going to take a nosedive. I am very busy doing something that I love after years of working for other people and I want to continue my work and leave something behind when I go. I need to lose weight. If I don't lose weight I will have less time on this big ball of mud to do what I love to do.

I like beer and I like hearty food, but those two loves have caught up with me and my weight is causing problems in my everyday life. I am going to try to change my life-style and I am willing to give in to making changes in order to achieve my goal.

Any support would be greatly appreciated. (JCM)

Hi Sissy, thank you for the encouragement. I bought a used Health O Meter beam scale on Sunday because the bathroom scale seemed to be reading all over the place. My experience has been (unfortunately I have done this before a few times) that success in the first 2 or 3 weeks points you in the right direction and an accurate scale keeps me on track.

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing today. Not much with me today. Finally got all my scarecrows out on the bench in the front yard along with some potted mums to. Its so hot here still and does not feel like Fall but at least it looks like it with all my decorations out in the yard. I also put some potted mums on the back patio to and some around the pool.

So not much else with me today, just me and the cat here and my cup of coffee. See you later.

Hi Sissy, Fall is in full swing here in WI too. Trees are turning and leaves are falling. Today was cool and wet as we slide into the dreaded WI winter.

I have a craft show on Saturday and I will be away from home all day. 3 or 4 of my eating events (my term) will take place at the show. I have an idea of what I will take with me, but I was curious as to what other people do when they are away from home for an extended period of time. Fast food is usually a diet killer for me so I have decided to carry what I need with me and eat my LC's out of my brown paper bag. If anyone has any ideas I would be interested in hearing them.

I know how eating out can ruin your low carb and healthy eating habits. I usually carry a cooler in the truck with diet soda's and some snacks like cheese cubes, fruit slices, bananas. I also like to carry a bag of prok rinds with me to and lots of water.
But if you do happen to buy a burger just pick at it and eat the meat and lettuce and tomato out of it. No one will ever know what you are doing.
I use to love to go to the craft shows in the Fall, i use to get most my Xmas gifts at that time but now I cannot walk to good with this arthritis in my knees so if we do go to a show I have to get my hubby to push me in my wheel chair.
You have fun at the craft show.

Welcome Jay!
I haven't checked in here in awhile. Was feeling depressed because I felt like I wasn't losing anything. Then last week one day I felt lighter so ventured checking the scale. Down 2 lbs.! That makes a total of 5 since end of July. But when I went to update my stats here, I see that makes a total of 13 since last spring!
Like you, I like to party on the weekends - pizza just goes with football, and rum and vanilla coke goes down good too! Consequently, if I'm going to continue that, I guess even with LCing durning the week, it will be a slow-go.
SO - CONGRATULATIONS on making the decision to make the necessary life-style changes! That is actually what a person really has to do, to get any real big results.

Cats, somettimes the week-ends really get me because we either eat out then or are having friends and family over to cook out. And youy know how much food can be aroubnd at those times and usually not healthy ones either. But I am trying hard to eat right in spite of it all. I am losing some weight but slowly. I still have so much more to lose but I am looking at the long term aspect of it and hoping in a year or so it will be all lost. Ijust want to get back into my size 14 again and I will be happy with that.

I know you probably don't have as much to lose as I do but may I ask what size you are looking to get down to? Are there any special ways you eat or cook to help you with your losing your weight? I have a problem with snacks, I love to snack and have been fighting with trying to do away with that because it will mess my eating up bad. Do you snack between means any? Idf so hat do you have? I have been eating fruit mostly.

Is cats our nick name or do you like Cats like I do? I only have one cat now and she is almost three years old but my old cat who was 17 yrs. old died last year and my young cat sure has missed him to. She looked all over the house for a long time for him after he passed. I was going to get another cat so she would not be alone but decided against it because she is so active and it takes all I can to keep her from destroying the house sometimes. Maybe when she is older and calms down some.

Not much else with me these days. Did get some Fall decorations out in the front yard and out by the pool to and they look nice. I love the fall decor but here where I live it is still so hot that its hard to get in the Fall mood. I put out some mums and my scarecrows to and a big lighted pumpkin out by the pool.
Cats do you decorate for the Holidays? My husband loves to decorate the outdoors for all the Holidays, and at Christmas I have to get after hime for putting out to much.

See you later.

I'm a real party pooper when it comes to seasonal decorating. I don't like messing with something that is up for such a short time. I did make a rather pretty centerpiece for my table for company dinner Saturday. I had 3 candles that are inside what looks like various shades of Birch wood, but it has like a copper linner in there. The candles are green, orange and kind of burgandy color and when lit inside those liners they look really pretty. BUT, I never really used them before as I didn't have anything to go with them. Went to the florist and paid $12 (yikes!) for a "sprig" that had greeen, brown and sort of gold leafs on it and like a brown fern thing. Anyhow, it came out nice. Other than that - no fall decorating for me.
Catsrus was really just the 1st thing that popped into my mind way back years ago when I first used internet and needed a user name. At the time I had a cat, but he was 19 years old. He is no longer with me and I'm gone so often on weekends that I decided not to get another pet of any kind.
Sizes - seems like they run from too big to too small. I shop the racks anywhere from 12 - 16 right now. I want to get to usually being a 12 that can maybe find a 10 once in awhile!
BF's birthday is on halloween, so we want to do some partying. I'm having a bit of a time finding a costume as they either come in 1 "adult" size which is supposed to fit up to 12, or Large which is 10-12 (how they think that's large is beyond me) or Plus size which is supposed to fit 16-22. He ordered 3 for me to try on - they are all getting sent back, too small (and also too skimpy even if they weren't so dang tight). I ordered a couple that at least appear to cover more, if they are just big enough. I may end up wipping something up on the sewing machine myself - which I don't really want to take the time to do. He's going a an "evil jester" and I can't think of any female costume that would go with that. Any ideas?
As far as snacks - during the day, my only option is what I have with me at work, so that's either boiled eggs, yogurt, or carrotts. At home, I try to have some humus made up and use it like a dip for either celery or broccoli. It's just me, so I don't keep any junk food on hand - other than after I've had company, like right now. I plan to take the left over spice cake to work for the crew to get it eaten up, 'cause just like right now - I'm kinda' thinking a piece sounds real good. Oh, I have found SB bars at the dollar store for $3 for 6, so I stocked up on them. They are higher carb than Atkins, but cheaper. I don't eat them on a regular basis, but do keep them on hand for snacking and also try to have one in my purse for emergencies; so that I don't do something clear off the wagon when "starving" and no LC food to be found.
For me, getting into the groove of exercise is the real problem. I work fairly early hours and I'm a morning person, so even though there's a good 5 hours after I get home; I pretty much waste them.

Just checking in. I made up some tiny ham rolls to have to snack on today. I take a slice of ham and roll cream cheese mixed with green onions in it and then slice it into thin pieces. I jusat use one slice of ham, thats enough for a snack .
So far my eating is going ok but I cannot do much exercise because of some health problem with my back so I swim in the pool and do water exercise mostly. I know if I could walk better and do more exercise I would probably lose my weight faster.

We don't go out on Halloween, we just stay home and give out candy. My husband has this ol black wide brim hat he will put on when he gives out candy and the kids thinks he is funny. The hat looks like one of those worn by the amish men. It has a wide brim on it. He came homeone day years ago with it from a garage sale he went to.

Most times I can get right back to eating right with the LC but lately I have been struggling sme with it. We go out to eat so much and go to friends homes to and eat at church to so I am around food all the time and yes, sometimes its really hard for me to eat LC.
I try my best but sometimes I fail like I guess we all do at time but we have to just keep looking forward to the future and when we lose all our weight, thats what keeps me going is to see what I will look like a year or so from now and now let today get me down.

It's cold and rainy here and I know that's why I'm in hibernation mode. Again last night, eat, eat, eat and sleep. I had a nap from 4:30 - 6 and went to bed at 9:30 and when I was awake all I did was eat. I had taken a dexi-trim max, which is supposed to prevent that, but it didn't have any effect (except maybe to contribute to a negative outlook on life). I just don't know how to get motivated about exercise or even about doing projects around the house and stuff.

Wish you was here with me, You could do your exercise in the pool like I do.
I use to love to exercise but now as I am older and have all this arthritis its hard to walk to do much except water exercises. Right now the weather has been real hot here so I have been swimming in our own pool but when it gets cooler weather I go up to the aquatic club to swim and exercise.
If you like to swim I bet your town or city has a aquatic club to join. Water exercises works out your whole body and its so much fun to especially with a gorup of women.

Not much else with me today Cats, just the same as always.
Take care.

Sissy, I had noticed that you are in sunny Fl and Nancy is in warm CA. I wish I was either one of those places!!! And I love to swim. But I live in a really small rural town. The only indoor pool here is at the girls' juvinille prison. It is open to the public one night a week for lap swimming, but I just don't like to go out in the cold to go swim + since it's at a prison, there's no electrical outlets for blow drying my hair afterward, so then it's out into the cold with a wet head. Just doesn't make it a very fun activity. But hey! Enjoy the pool there and send some of that sunshine up here!!!

Hi Joe, I'm a little late to be on time for this craft show but DH and I set up at several trade shows every year - some 1-day, some 2 & 3-day events; some close to home, some requiring travel. It can be a challenge to stay on plan, but it can be done.

Oopsie or Rev Rolls make it easy to have a legal sandwich, and I usually bring a salad in individual plastic containers along with a salad dressing spritzer, some flax or almond flour muffins, some frozen berries (they thaw quite quickly), diet soda and lots of water. Quantities depend on how long the day will be - usually 2 meals and a snack. A couple of freezer packs in an average size cooler keeps everything fresh all day. Hope this helps for next time!

Still dreary here, but weatherman says we will see sunshine by this afternoon. I am considering joining the fitness center, thinking having paid the $, might force me to stop there on the way home from work & if nothing else, do the tread mill. But, they require a physical for people over 50 and I really don't want to get that because I can't afford it and don't need it - except to meet their requirements. Grrrr... Maybe if I find the right person, I can sneak my memebership in without one....

Fri, Oct-24-08, 08:12
Hi Glendarc, thanks for the reply. I made it through the show with a ham (low salt) and cheese (mozz) sandwich on whole grain bread and a banana, plenty of water and diet Green Tea. Total Cals 550, carbs 67. I took items that I could pick up and put away easily like the sandwich and banana. I spread this out over the course of the day and it worked fine.

I have learned to take smaller portions on a regular schedule and spread my eating out over the course of the day. A smaller portion every 2-3 hours re-sets my hunger alarm and I am not running over to BK for for a whopper or two thanks to a good LC breakfast and snack.

Hi Cats, actually I don't do crafts although I have done a lot of different types of needlework, knitting and crocheting, etc. DH and I buy and sell antique and vintage postcards, mostly small town views, so we set up at antique shows, as well as some stamp shows.

We've had a long spell of dry weather although cool, so we've been able to keep golfing several times a week - keeps us reasonably fit and satisfies the docs demand that we get some exercise! We're not good at it but we enjoy it a lot more than gym workouts.

JCM, that sounds cool. Don't think I've seen the tiles like you are talking about. Where, or how do people use them? (I mean, a person doesn't just retile their wall everyday) I assume as a trivet?
Yesterday was a terrible miserable day weather-wise here. It was cold and WINDY! Miserable weather conditions make me hibernate (eat & sleep). I tried watching t.v. but I have the digital converter box. I don't know if it was because of the wind or what (my antanae is simply rabbit ears, not on top of the house) but all 5 of my channels would come in briefly, then about the time I sat down it would go out (which with digital is really awful as the picture and audio go all jumpy-like), I'd get up and try to adjust the antanae, but it didn't stay out long enough to know if I had adjusted it correctly, so I'd sit down, and then it would do the same thing over again. I had such a headache after an hour of the jumpy audio that I just gave up.
I wish they had warned that this could happen, so I'd have saved the packaging and returned the stupid converter boxes.
I made some yummy pumpkin bars, that I usually put cream cheese frosting on, but I've been eating them without, so decided I could save those extra carbs. Also made cranberry jello to help have something sort of sweet to eat. However, I made a regular cake to take to church havest part & didn't go, so had a little sample to that before taking it to work. This trying to keep/get the weight off gets old doesn't it? Seems like I've fought lbs all of my life. I really don't remember a time when I wasn't 'trying' to eat low cal, or low fat, or low carb or something. Anyone else feel that way? or were you able to eat what you wanted when you were younger?

Hi Cats, I print images on single or multiple ceramic and marble tiles and frame them. Some can be used as trivits, but the glossy ones are meant to be displayed, either hung or standing. I also do glass suncatchers which are nice when hung in a window. Now I am working on glass Christmas ornaments with a vintage Christmas theme. I do have a web site, but I have to see what the forum rules are regarding posting websites. I don't want to ruffle any feathers here because this is a very good forum.

Do either of you feel like you make any money on selling crafts? I was basically a craft store addict and had to keep myself completely out of them for a few years, as I realized I was spending as much as I was making/saving doing it. I also limit myself on going to craft shows, because I know it will just fill me with ideas and I'll want to go back to making things. And I really don't need any more things. I'm trying to wean myself from crochet too. I like to do it, but gosh, all my relatives/friends have afghans and prayer shawls and good grief, the nice soft yarn is expensive! I don't think people even realize how much these nice gifts cost (in addition to the time).

Hi Cats, Some shows are better than others as far as money is concerned. Some shows are profitable and some I am glad to get my entrance fee back (even after a lot of time and work). I would like to make a little bit more because of the money that I have spent on supplies and equipment. What keeps me doing what I do is the positive reaction that I get from many people at the shows that I attend.

Question: Has anyone here in the 60s+ thread used one of those mini trampolines? I'm discussing it in the exercise section & I do have an online friend, my age, that uses & enjoys one. I'm just worried that I might fall. I don't have the best sense of balance anyway. They have them with a bar in the front, but they are quite a bit more expensive. Anyone here have comments or advice on these?

Jayseem
Thu, Oct-30-08, 07:45
Hi Cats, I had a mini trampoline many years ago, when I was in fairly good shape, and didn't use it very often because it was difficult for me to stay on. You are right about the balance thing. Even if you land on 2 feet you have to stay towards the center and that is hard to sustain for any length of time. The most that I could ever do on it was only a minute or two. But everybody is different so you might have success with it. If you have Craigslist in your area you might find one at a reasonable price or I see them a lot at garage sales.

I have a Nordic Trak, which has sat un-used for a few (many ;) ;) )years. I am going to try dusting that off and see how I do on it. It has a rest that you lean against and the skis are very stable. The trick is to get into a regular routine and staying with it. I haven't exercised as much as I should have over the years and I would like to get back to burning 100 or so cals a day on the Nordic Trak.

A year ago I had knee problems, torn MCL on the left and torn meniscus on the right, so I was hobbling around not even thinking about exercising. Today I feel fine and if I get a few more pounds off in November I will get back on the Nordic Trak. Even 10 or 15 minutes a day of aerobics will help.

Best to all,

JCM

I'm not 60, I am 50, but I haven't had any issues staying on my trampoline. I don't usually jump though, I use a sort of boxing shuffle where my legs are apart and I shift the weight from one leg to the other by bending at the knees a bit. I suppose I picked that up from kickboxing or martial arts classes. Its a good workout still but I think it might be safer if your balance isn't great.

Sometimes I do jumping jacks or run in place lifting my legs high on the rebounded, but most of the time I use that shuffle. It seems to work the inner thighs nicely.

Whatever you can do to improve your balance is good. I notice a lot of seniors have real problems with that and I imagine that leads to a lot of falls. My parents had serious issues with balance and walking across the living room was like walking on a tight rope as far as they were concerned.

I try to remember to practice balancing whenever convenient, like while waiting on the microwave I'll stand on one foot.

Actually, I just finished exercising on my rebounder and think I can describe it better.

I have my legs pretty wide, like at the outer parts of the jumping surface. Then I bounce back and forth shifting the weight from one leg to the other. On dry land it wouldn't be a bounce, but the rebounder makes it bounce a bit. I don't entirely lift a foot off, but the off-leg goes up on the toes and the on-leg has a bit of a bend in the knee. I use my arms a lot to get my heart rate up (flap them around, simulate jumping jacks or whatever strikes my fancy). I made a CD with lots of bouncy fast music to keep me going!

It feels very stable to me.

I have never used a trampoline but i do use my step up alot.
My legs are weak from some back surgeries and from all my bad arthritis so I ouold be afraid to use a trampoline.
I do mostly water aerobics in our pool to strengthen my legs .

I never made money off my crafts either. I think I spent more making them than I made off selling them.
Now I only do them for gifts and for my family and myself.

I need to get more fat off my body to so I can do more exercise. Most my exercise is water exercises in our pool and riding my exercise bike. I do not walk much because i have arthritis bad in my knees and hips. I do get injections in them but they are still hard to walk on yet.Hope getting this weight off will help me some.

I went shopping today, thinking I'd get me a mini trampoline. At the 1st store I went to it was $40, so I decided to see what they had at the next store. It was $35 there, but only 36" and I thought the ones I had read about online wre 40". Neither one had a bar in front. SO, I ended up deciding not to get one right now. I'll tell my kids to watch for one on garage sales (even though it's not garage sale season in NE now). I was just too depressed today, and probably just being honest with myself, knowing it would probably end up not getting used.

WHERE IS EVERYONE???????
I am doing Induction. This is Day 2. After seeing the pictures from the Halloween party - ugh, my costume made me look big as a cow. And Sun., I posted that I was depressed, but I neglected to mention I had a Large Blizzard "to relieve the depression" which of course brought on the guilt again.
Anyway, with the time change, I am able to get up in time to exercise in the a.m. So I have 2 days out of the way. They tell me it takes 21 days to form a habit. So right now that is my goal - 21 days straight of getting up to exercise in the a.m.

Hi Cats, I am here but I do not know where everone else is. Maybe they will be back soon, I hope so.
I know what you mean about that blizzard you ate, I have been know to do the same thing. At the BP station where we get gas for the car they have a Dairy Queen inside it so I have gone in and got me a chocolate dippped ice cream cone, I love those things. I have bouts of depression and sweets do help, don't know why but they do. Do you take any medication for your depression? I take porzac, it works best for me. i have been on others but none seemed to help.

I got this way, with depression after our son was dignoised with leukemia back in yr. 2000 and the entire time he was sick and going through kemo and bone marrow transplant I was a basket case from worring about him so much, but in 2002 he passed away and i cannot get over it. i have been to counciling but nothing helps me to get over this depression. When you lose a child you seem to die inside to, it takes your life to.

But I am trying hard to lose my weight in spite of everything going on with me. I just thank GOD that I have such a loving and wonderful husband who stands by me and takes such good care of me. I have arthritis real bad and do walk good anymore so he helps me so much with that.

Take care and I will check back in with ya later.

Hi Sissy, DQ Blizzards are good in Florida and DQ Blizzards are good in Wisconsin only from May1 to Oct.31. In between, Blizzards are not good in Wisconsin and I shutter to think about the next 5 months and all that snow that we will be shoveling and snow blowing and spinning our tires in. But, we all have to be somewhere on this big ball of mud, so here I am.

Sorry to hear about some of the other things that have happened in your life. It takes courage to express those personal things in your life on a public forum, but maybe by expressing them here it might help you to carry on. I hope so.

Sissy, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I do think the loss of a child would be the very hardest to endure. I'm glad you have a husband that supports you and I pray God continue to give you comfort and splashes of joy. I'm not currently taking any antidepressant. I thought I was taking too many things that have "may cause drowsiness" on the label, so that was one I eliminated early summer. However yesterday I had the prescription refilled. Maybe I need to go back on them, at least while I'm trying to do Induction level again. Also thinking that I need them more during the winter. I've never been officially diagnosed with SAD, but I'm sure I'm a bit more depressed during the grey, cold months.
Yep, Jayseam - snow is on it's way. It's in the NE forecast for tonight. Hopefully just a few flurries. No Blizzards (of any kind!)
I am still thoughtfully considering the trampoline. Found one with a bar across the front online for $65 (inc. S&H). I just don't enjoy anything cardio, partially because my knees hurt alot of the time.
Have any of you heard of, or tried, the shoes with springs inside? BF saw them online and wondered if that would help me enjoy walking more. So that's a thought too.
Right now I'm just doing what is mostly a stretching DVD. It does include crunches, but that's about the only thing that's beyond stretching, primarily to elongate the spine. It feels good, but I'm not sure how much it's helping toward my goal of weight loss.

Hi Cats, I am still thinking about my Nordic Trak down in my basement. I am putting off getting on it because of some damage that I did to both knees last year (not on the Nordic) and I don't want to re-injure either knee (excuse #1). Also, I would like to lose a few more pounds before I start (excuse #2) and, finally I should wait to clear it with my doctor because of my high BP (excuse # 3). Once I start it again (when I run out of excuses) I hope to do it faithfully 3-4 times a week. It is low impact and you can set the exertion level for a good aerobic workout and it gives you plenty support as you lean into a padded tummy rest as you ski. I used to do 1 hour sessions on it. Today I only want to do 20 minute sessions every other day.

I checked a used Nordic Trak on our local Craigslist and I saw one on there for $30.00.

Yes, I understand what it is to have knee pain. Mine seems to come and go. Arthritis pills don't do a thing for it. Unfortunately, with the cold weather the knee pain is back, so this a.m. when the alarm went off I just couldn't make myself go exercise. I rode the stationary bike at work for about 15 minutes, which is all I could endure of that. Maybe this afternoon (after I have a nap) I can get up and do my stretching DVD. It really isn't hard on my knees & several of the exercises she says are "knee stabilizers". It was just the idea of doing anything this morning.

I've been away from this forum--and away from low-carb eating--for almost a year. I'm feeling the need of some encouragement and inspiration to get back to what I know works. I'm 65, have arthritis in both hips and work from home so am VERY sedentary. I'm also dealing with chronic anemia so have lots of issues with low energy. I've been reading through the posts in this thread and am hoping some of you can give me some of your best tips to "jump-start" me back into a healthier mindset.

Hi Judlee, I am fairly new to this forum myself, but I look at this whole website as my weight loss savior. When I started looking at weight loss programs I decided to go with the South Beach program, which had a lot of meal plans that I could relate to. Then I re-read Atkins and got hooked on that program and have been following it faithfully for several weeks (except for several glasses of wine once a week). I haven't been hungry or had cravings during that time.

My approach is to stay on plan, although I started at 60g of carbs and started to eliminate carbs everyday as I went along. Planning meals and seeing your carb intake on a daily basis is super simple due to the My Plan feature of this website. I would suggest that you go into My Plan and record everything that you are eating. After a few days you might be able to fine tune your plan and start eliminating those foods that are causing some problems in your diet. Using My Plan I can lay out my meals for the entire day and know exactly how I am doing on Atkins. This also takes a lot of guess work out of meal planning and allows me to keep preparation to a minimum.

No matter which diet you choose using My Plan is the key to making them work successfully for you.

A couple of things you mention are really helpful tips. Starting out with a generous amount of carbs and slowly scaling back and using My Plan both will, I think, help me get back on track. This is the time of year, Thanksgiving, that I went off the plan last year so if I allow myself a few more carbs for the holiday maybe I can get going even now. Thanks for your help!

Are any in the group doing the meat & eggs only, or zero carb? I'm sort of moving from Atkins Induction to zero carb. Still haven't read enough about it to be real comfortable with the high fat, no carb idea. But I'll at least give it a try and see what it does in MY body.
My knees have been killing me so I haven't been exercising. Keep thinking I'll stop at the fitness center on the way home & get signed up there, but so far this week I've had other errands to run right after work, then I just wanna' get home & eat & sleep.
I have yet to find a diet plan that truely "increases energy" as so many say the LC plans do. I just need 10 hours of sleep per night and there's no way I can get it. So sometimes I take a 2 hour nap when I get home, then get around 7 or 8 hours at night.

Sissy, if you go to the threads for different locations, under U.S. if you find the "Nebraska2" thread, the last several posts have been between CB an me discussing it. She's the one that got me interested in it. Then under the plans section, under Atkins, I started a thread asking "zero carb anyone" and have had several responses with further information. These "zlc" or "vlc" people basically eat meat and fat and that's all! Some say they have done it for like 6 years! I can see it as a plan for a short (very short) period, but just doing it this week, I'm so sick of meat (I NEVER thought I would hear myself say that) and so craving anything that might resemble bread. But "attempting" zero carbs and having CB coach me on that has helped me toward staying under the 20 carb Induction level. One thing they do different than Atkins, they say to eat enough to stay full for 5-6 hours, so you only eat 3 times a day. Atkins, I believe, says it's okay to eat when you are hungry and allows for a snack, between meals. But the zero carb people say every time you eat, it causes release of insulin, which you don't want to happen.
I think I'm going to call the doctor & see about those injections for my knees, although it gave my Mom really bad side effects; so that + cost, I hesitate. But I sure don't want to go through the whole winter like this. Yesterday I got home from work at 4;00 & took tylenol PM to knock me out & slept until 7:30. Stayed laying down with pillows arranged just so for knees to not hurt so bad and watched tv a couple hours, then took another tylenol PM and went to bed. That's no life, so something's got to change. A little sunshine would help too. It's been another dreary week here.

I got the cortizone ones for a long time and the last ones I got was called SYNVISC, you get them in a series of three injections a week apart.

Hi Everyone!
Well, since I last posted I went back on my artritis pills. It's the generic for Lodine. They (or something) seems to be helping for now. I think I get immune to them and just have to go off for a length of time, in order to make them work again.
Today, for some reason, I am feeling REALLY, REALLY full on my 3 fried eggs & 3 strips of bacon. I put somewhere between 1 tsp and 1 Tbl. of coconut oil in my coffee this a.m. Don't know if that's why I feel so full or what.
I think I'm getting the idea of the zero carb plan and doing pretty good with it. However, the scale this morning is not showing any change. Possibly because I had a glass of champagne Sat. night.
Today I have to leave work early & rent the carpet cleaning machine. By the time I get that done, I doubt I'll want to go see about joining the fitness center. That is the problem with trying to exercise after work. Seems practically every day, there's something else to be done instead and if there's not, I'm so tired I want a nap and not a threadmill.

I am 67 and I was a carbaholic up until mid October of this year. My goal was to start at 60 carbs a day and follow the SB diet plan. I used MyPlan to record everything that I ate and gradually removed carbs from my diet. Eventually I committed to Atkins and worked my way down to 20 carbs a day. Since November 1 I have been below 20 net carbs a day and I plan to stay there until at least January 1. I credit a good breakfast of 2 eggs and 2 sausages to help me make it through the day (I never ate breakfast before). I am never in a crave mode like I was before I started Atkins. Hope it lasts.

I plan to start a journal this weekend and try to list what I ate on a daily basis before I started Atkins. It has been a good experience for me to write down what I was eating everyday and see why I risked my life by going over 300 lbs and staying there.

I'm 63, been low-carbing just a couple of weeks, in the vicinity of 20-30 carbs a day. The plan I'm doing allows much more, but I agree with the spirit of Atkins' induction - give myself a whoosh at first for motivation. Um, didn't happen. :/ That's okay, I feel better. I've done this before, and lost more quickly. Yes, we're getting old, aren't we? Nice to have other old people to talk to about this. :)

Cameron - now there's a plan I've never heard of (and I thought I had tried them all). I'm really looking for something with more carbs that's easier to live with, but OTOH I always liked Atkins because the only thing I had to watch was carbs. But it seems this time around, that's not doing it. It's like I either need to count calories, or lower the fat. I don't know. Really depressed about it.
Can you briefly summarize what this Cameron plan is? or give a link where I could read more about it?
BTW - welcome to the TOFF thread!! Yes, I appreciate having others that have some of my same "ailments" to talk to also.

Hi Cats!

Dr. Robert Cameron created the original "Drinking Man's Diet" in the early 1960s. Remember the mimeographed lists of carb counts that were changing hands like samizdat then? That was him. He said, simply, that as long as you ate fewer than 60 total carbs a day, you'd move to, and remain at, your best weight. And that's what happened for me, but in the 1960s, I was in my 20s. He reprinted his book just recently - here's the link:

http://www.amazon.com/Drinking-Mans-Diet-Cookbook/dp/0918684633/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228320865&sr=1-1

Cameron was pragmatic about it - said when you slip, limit it to the specific slip you already made, and start fresh from there. Nothing is ruined.

Didn't know where to ask this - but thought the older group might be the ones who would have the best advice -
I have been SO TIRED. I swear I could sleep 24/7. Lately I've been going to work, dragging thru (often laying down at noon break), coming home & going straight to bed. Next day, same thing. I've also had an upset stomach alot lately. I've gone thru this before - I seem to eventually get rested up or something. BUT, I've also seen my general phys. and ob gyn and asked about this. They do some blood tests and thyroid tests and that never indicates anything, so that's it. No further concern (and also, by then, sometimes I'm better & it seems pointless to run up a medical bill trying to get rid of tiredness that eventually goes away on it's own). HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF THIS? DOES ANYONE HAVE A SUGGESTION FOR WHAT KIND OF SPECIALIST I SHOULD SEE? - Oh, and I'm assuming this group won't give me the standard reason that I get from the doctors I've seen "well, you're getting older, you know". GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I'm more tired now too. Maybe eating like this, we're getting back in touch with how our long-ago ancestors interacted with nature. Winter (northern hemisphere) is time to conserve energy.

Another possibility - as we lose fat, we may be releasing the stored remnants of illnesses that were hidden there to keep them out of our bloodstream. Now the ghosts are circulating again on their way out, and our immune systems are battling them. It does feel like that sometimes.

Another one - I don't always eat as much protein as I should do for low-carbing. Could that be a possibility for you?

I see my last post stated that my tummy wasn't feeling good. That's the case again today. Seems like I've had alot of upset stomach and inconsistant BMs (either I'm constipated, or I've got the runs). In Nov. I did the meat & eggs & high fat thing, and I'm wondering if that is what has caused me to have such a touchy stomach lately (???) Then over on a SB thread where someone was switching from Atkins to SB they mentioned the fat in Atkins giving them stomach problems. I'm bringing it up here, because I think the older we get the more problematic the BM thing is anyway. I don't know really what I'm asking - just any comments, advice or experience with this anyone?

Yes, I have the same digestive problems, Cats, and I figure it's a tradeoff. The fat cues our bodies to keep our stored fat moving out, and keeps us satisfied. If we ate more protein instead, that wouldn't be as good for us overall.

I've had problems an upset stomach most of my life--the Dr even diagnosed an ulcer when I got pregnant the first time! When it rears up I take them for a few days and then I'm fine. I'm taking an enzyme & the 1st ingredient listed is hydrochloric acid. However, I sometimes forget to take it. I also take Super Cleanse almost every night. I try to regulate things with that, but for some reason 2 doesn't seem to keep things moving and 3 is what sometimes causes the runs. I have recently started taking flaxseed oil a.m. & p.m. (when I remember) in hopes that with that added, maybe 2 super cleanse will be good. When I get back to LC, since I'm thinking of doing SB, I will maybe start having the flaxseed bread (pancakes in my opinion) for breakfast. (I think flaxseed is allowed on Ph. 1 SB) I'm thinking that may be better for me than the constant bacon & eggs that I was having.
JAnn, what brand of probiotics do you take? And same question to anyone else who takes them & thinks they help with this problem.
Thanks

I have recently started taking flaxseed oil a.m. & p.m. (when I remember) in hopes that with that added, maybe 2 super cleanse will be good. When I get back to LC, since I'm thinking of doing SB, I will maybe start having the flaxseed bread (pancakes in my opinion) for breakfast. (I think flaxseed is allowed on Ph. 1 SB) I'm thinking that may be better for me than the constant bacon & eggs that I was having.
JAnn, what brand of probiotics do you take? And same question to anyone else who takes them & thinks they help with this problem.
Thanks
Happy New Year Everyone!!! (I got a date tonight!) :)I use various brands, doesn't seem to make a difference to me.

To keep my system running smoothly I like to have a flax meal muffin or a pancake each day along with at least 24, hopefully 48 ounces, of water a day. I wouldn't advise eating flax without drinking a sufficient amount of liquid, preferably not coffee as it is a diuretic.

Well, I'll make the first post here of 2009!!!!
Happy New Year Everyone!
I'm really frustrated (still) over which diet (uhm, excuse me, WOE) is for me. And also over how to get myself in gear to exercise. Just tired of worrying about it. But don't want to buy any bigger clothes. How do you all stay motivated?

Cats, I can't say I'm always brimming over with motivation. I live by myself, though, so I simply don't have any high-carb food in the house. Sometimes it's a matter of trudging along from day to day, eating food that doesn't excite me, until the motivation comes back.

Hydrochloric acid is only stomach acid.

Different strokes for different folks, right? I read the obituaries first thing in the morning. If my name is not listed, I'm motivated for the entire day...

I've been wondering that too.
Well I'm preparing to get another year older in a couple days. But I'm feeling really good, so it's not as awful as those years when I "feel" my age. I've been taking probiotics and I do think I've felt better and maybe even had a little less appetite. I have lost 5 lbs this month on SB Ph.I. However I can now start Ph.II which allows for a glass of wine, which I will have on my birthday, but other than that, I pretty much plan to stay on Ph. I. I think the older we get and also the closer to goal we get, the harder it is to get it off.
Also, I'm having left foot surgery Feb 3, 6 weeks to recovery; then have the right foot done, and another 6 weeks. So no real exercise program for me for about 3 months.
Sissy, I sure hope your cold goes away soon.
I hope everyone else will 'check-in' too!

Thanks Sissy! Right now I'm hoping the insurance co. approves it. I guess there's a question about necessity. Ugh!
This a.m. I've been reading about the bennefits of Cod liver oil and also of high doses of Vit D3 in reguard to arthritis. Do any of you take either of these? Results?
Snowing here. I'm ready for Spring (or a warm vacation).
