If I were you I'd take the book to the doc office and ask them. My step daughter is preg. and her doc told her she could cut back on some carbs, potato, white bread, pasta. But she had to eat veggies, wheat bread, drink milk. But he did say to try and stay away from artifical sweetners. This is what she told us. But the best advise is to talk to your doc.
Good Luck

No way of eating for weight loss is good or safe for pregnancy. However following sbd to maintain (not attempting to lose weight) is fine.

When I was pregnant, the doctors and nutrionists gave me the same advice that skippie said: cut back on starches, increase my protein intake, avoid artificial sweeteners. They encouraged fruit and some fruit juices instead of tons of sugar. The nutritionist also said to be sure to get 3-4 servings of dairy each day, preferably from fat-free or lowfat things. Lots of water was encouraged, even though I felt like I was always going to bathroom anyway, and they said to watch my caffeine intake.
I agree with everyone else (and I'm sure you already knew) that weightloss should not be a goal during pregnancy -- I'm pretty overweight and they were looking at having me gain 15-20 pounds. As the nutritionist told me, most of the weight gain will go to fluids, such as the amniotic fluid, extra blood, etc., so basically just eat for a very healthy one with about 400 or so more calories per day (depending on the doc.'s recommendations) from good foods.

There are many here on this forum who did South Beach diet while pregnant successfully - but not stringent phase 1. If you basically follow a good phase 2/maintenance diet, you should be able to get a net loss even while gaining (meaning you may gain a few lbs in pregnancy, but after delivery will be weighing less than before). Check out the journal of Jenn ("Elsah") and "Hilary M" - they know the pregnancy South Beach crowd and have just gone through it (Hilary is sitting waiting to deliver around now).
