In India it is widely believed that the horsegram has the
medicinal property of breaking the kidney stone , lower
cholesterol and reduce blood pressure . Many native doctors
recommend its soup twicw a day for kidney stones . Has this
any scientific bearing ?

I have no information about it. Following the
nutritional/medical journals to a degree I see frequent
studies being done in India about the plants used in
traditional medicine to see if they have an effect and then
what substance can be isolated from the plant that is the
active part. If you do a search on google using "Horsegram
india" or some such you might find some useful information.
While intresting, reports not confirmed by formal research is
not very useful in most aspects.

If you go to Pubmed, you'll find lots of abstracts on the
subject. It's always a good idea to use the Latin
Genus/species name, which in this case is Dolichos biflorus.
Here's one sample abstract.
