I've decided to try the South Beach diet starting today. I have read up on it on the web yesterday and then went to purchase the book and the two stores near my house did not carry it. Based on what I have read, I've decided to start the diet today anyway and wanted to share my day's menu with everyone. Can you tell me if this is appropriate for Phase 1 of SB?

Breakfast: 2 HB eggs and 2 16 oz. bottles of water

Snack: Decaf tea with 1 packet of Splenda and 20 peanuts and 1 16 oz. bottle of water

Lunch: Salmon with spinach and lemon juice, and a small caesar salad, water

Snack: 1 HB egg and Decaf tea with Splenda and 1 16 oz. bottle of water

Dinner: Shrimp fried in olive oil and garlic with 1/3 avocado and drizzled with jalapeno sauce and fresh lime juice, 1 cup of black beans and 1 16 oz. bottle of water

Dessert: Sugar free jello with low-fat whipped topping.

Also, I've read several different web sites and am getting conflicting info. One says you can have low-fat plain yogurt? Is this true? I am a huge fan of yogurt and would much rather have that for dessert than the sugar free jello.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you! :)

Welcome to SB. Here is a web site that lists the foods for each Phase. mizfrogspad.com Just click on SB Diet listed on the left, from this page.

This will help until you get the book. I don't think you should have yogurt on Phase 1 as you need to clean your body of carbs. I really don't remember for sure. Your first days looks good. :agree:

Happy Holidays,

Thanks Skippie. I'll stay away from the yogurt. :)

Skippie:

I was just reading the site you recommended. It mentions that you are allowed 2 cups of milk/dairy daily, including yogurt. This is listed on Phase 1 Foods, Foods to Enjoy.

Also, it mentions to start with 1/3 - 1/2 cup of beans. So, I will change my menu for tonight. :)

During Phase 1, limit yourself to fat-free plain yogurt. Avoid any sweetened yogurts, even those with artificial sweeteners, but feel free to flavor your yogurt as you would a ricotta crиme.

During Phases 2 and 3, you may also introduce artificially sweetened, nonfat flavored yogurt. To identify yogurt that's been artificially sweetened, look for the words "light" or "lite" on the label. Limit to 4 ounces daily.

Thanks 4 Beans. That still sounds better than sugar free jello. :)

I actually got hooked on the sugar free jello there for awhile! Make it with club soda for a little holiday sparkle! LOL

Thanks Shannongtk. I think my problem with SF jello is that I ate it quite a bit while doing Atkins and I don't want to even look at jello for awhile. I tried the ricotta with almond flavoring and splenda last night. It was really delicious! :)

I haven't tried the ricotta thing yet! I'll have to pick some up this week! I've been eating an occasional Keebler low-carb cookie.....just to take the edge off of the holiday hunger! LOL

You need to add more veggies. I only really see veggies during lunch. I wouldn't really consider an avacado a veggie, as it is mostly a good-fat item.
Instead of the HB egg and peanusts for a snack, try several celery sticks with natural pb (1tbsp). Or another option is cucumber and bell pepper slices with hummus. Or instead of the HB eggs at breakfast, make a hearty veggie omlette. Add a chunky spinach salad to dinner.
You will find that the more veggies you eat, the faster the pounds will drop, and the healthier you will feel. Go for it!

Congratulations on making a great decision for your health AND your body! I agree with the other posters - and do add more veggies, when possible. SB asks you to limit sugar-free stuff to 75 calories a day in Phase I, as I recall.

Here's a snack you might enjoy: take 2 slices of deli turkey, spread with a little of the appropriate LC spread you enjoy (I use Wasabi Mayo - very sparingly!), put a length of raw red pepper and roll each slice of turkey/pepper up little a little mini roll-up. (I might even have gotten this from the SB book itself - can't remember.) If you don't want to "handle" a piece of turkey, then start with a lettuce leaf and then add the turkey/spread/pepper. I find it very satisfying - cold, crunchy, and extra flavors going on.

Hope you enjoy it! And keep up the good work - this is going to be a GREAT week for you - trust me!!

FYI: yogurt and milk are now 2-3 servings per day in all phases. :D

welcome to the beach!

I second the comment about more veggies - you need lots more. Try to have veggies at every meal, even at snack time.

I also strongly recommend a more substantial breakfast. I am doing best when I start with a great breakfast - 2 egg omelette with green peppers, onion, tomato, and shrimps or salmon instead of just 2 HB eggs.

It sounds strange but you really can eat a LOT and still loose.

I wouldn't eat nuts in phase 1 - I forgot whether it is formally allowed or not but they are dangerous, at least for me, and I know for many others here.

I also second that fat-free plain yoghurt is ok in phase 1.

Thank you for all the replies.

I am still really enjoying the SB diet. The scale hasn't moved recently, but my clothes are getting loose and my tummy flatter. Always a good thing! :) I am going to work harder on getting more veggies into my diet and will hopefully see the scale moving again soon.

Glad to hear the fat-free yogurt is Phase I allowable, I just mixed two batches of yogurt sauce tonight, one with chipotle pepper :yum: and one with curry :yum: :yum: They're great in place of those dips I loved so much back in the day of the "healthy" vegtable platter with ranch and french onion dip. :nono:
