Activity: Going to a meeting, then clothes shopping. Can you believe it? Rachel and I met each other in the bra department at the Bay! Highly odd, since I haven't bought a bra for 5 years. We had a coffee (Rachel) and roast beef (me) and shopped. Walked around the block and got lost
Measurements: I don't really care, but I measured myself anyway.
Bust: 42.5"
Waist: 38"
Hips: 41.75"
I looked through my copy of Protein Power to find my original measurements. The only ones required for calculation were waist and hips. At that time:
Waist: 46.6"
Hips: 47.6"
So, that's quite a reduction, but still somewhat "ball-shaped". LOL!
Thoughts: Nothing profound. How about "I love this WOE"! Looking forward to fat-fast tomorrow. Gelitan loaf. Yum-yum. ;)

Thoughts:
I thought I would foil the hunger today and make a huge gelatin loaf. I forgot to bring the avocado to work and had none for the loaf. So, I had this 7 cup slab of white jelly with a few shrimp embedded in it. The portion I brought home was fed to the dogs because I wasn't hungry, but I'm supplementing with 2 Tbsp. of Udo's oil. So, somewhere between 3-7 cups is the right amount.
I'm out of town for a few days and will try to post while I'm gone.
Made food for the plane trip tomorrow. Rack of lamb and cucumbers. I think I'll pack a few cans of tuna for Stillman day.
No headache this time. And that buzzy feeling is about!
Still gotta pack!

Calories have been way to high for the past few days. Did not enjoy the whipping cream and wasn't even anticipating it eagerly. When macadamia nuts are gone, do not buy any more.
Used a cascara sagrada blend for blockage and it is what's giving me the tummy ache.

I really look forward to Fat Fast. Thinking of doing it once a week when the study is over. Stillman's just doesn't do it for me.
For fat fast, I may make a savoury cheesecake next week. Cream cheese, whipping cream, gelatin. I don't really want the dairy, but I'll do it for the sake of research.
Going away last week really through a wrench in the works. A write off!

Y'know, Karen, I too like the idea of doing a weekly Fat Fast and/or Stillman day. It's making me much more conscious of what I eat and drink the rest of the week. I notice I'm much less likely to munch, even on days I'm 'allowed' to.

I find it refreshing to not be thinking about what I am going to eat or about food for one - two on the study - days a week. It sort of re-sets my mind, if you know what I mean.

and poor you ... that must've been nerve-wracking first thing in the morning.
Sorry yer still bunged up. The cascara isn't the greatest idea .. that and senna leaf are basically irritants .. they stimulate the intestine to spasm, which is how they get things to move along -- or else they just cause cramps. Hmm ... I only see 2 Tbsp oil listed on yer menu yesterday .. except for today (Stillman) you could probably go up another Tbsp for "therapeutic purposes". Check out my Tips article on Intestinal Health .. I describe a Yoga movement you can do .. it helps me ;)

Thanks Doreen. Every time I take cascara - prolly once a year - I forget how it works against me. Then when it takes a few days for the IT to get back into shape, I remember. But hurray, today it happened!
I got a sample today of what touts itself as cold pressed avocado oil. I'll try it tomorrow and will start eating greens first thing in the morning.
Actually the owner of the other dog was more freaked than I was. After the spat, the other dog came up and kissed Io. Then all dogs were back to normal. Luckily, Io is not a dog that holds a grudge. I've learned a lot from that dog! ;)

Sat, Sep-01-01, 14:31
Here is the scoop as I'm coming to the end of week two...
I jumped the gun be trying Fat Fast and Stillman the week before the Study officially started. That week I lost four pounds.
I spent four days of the official week one away from home and into a three hour ahead time change. I was constipated from my arrival till Tuesday of the next week and there was no weight loss.
Today I weighed in at four pounds down. The big buzz happened during Stillman this week, but happened during Fat Fast previously. I do weigh myself everyday but wait for a few days to claim a loss.
September 1, 2001:
Weight: 156
Bust: 42.5
Waist: 36.5
Hips: 40.25
August 20, 2001
Weight: 160
Bust: 42.5"
Waist: 37"
Hips: 41.75"
I can see where it would have been more useful to measure parts of my leg from a standing position now, because the waist measurements fluctuate wildly.
I think this is incredible! The results are similar to the results I experienced when I first started LC. I will be adjusting my goal weight down to 140 pounds when I reach my former goal of 150 pounds.
I finally weigh less than the combined weight of my dogs!

Was part of a progressive dinner last night. It was great! Drank a little wine – I will only sip if presented with a spectacular wine now - and now my stomach hurts as a result.
I think I have finally come through the “other side” of addiction. In loose clinical terms, it’s called “running the tape loop all the way to the end.” The addict stops the tape at the pleasure part and doesn’t watch it all the way to the consequences. I was faced with a great looking and smelling chocolate mousse last night and didn’t even want one bite.
Since I hardly eat any dairy, I was surprised to see how many calories 1 oz. of Parmesan cheese contained. 111 calories! Now I am doubly happy that it is no longer part of my basic diet.
Before I cut down on dairy – I was eating way too much whipping cream – my throat would react in a funny way. I would have to swallow constantly after eating it and decided that this reaction was not a good thing.
Week three has begun!

Hi Karen:
I would be interested to know where this restaurant is so I can add it on to my list of restaurants to try.
Thanks!:)

At the corner of Pender and Abbott Street, northwest corner of Pender. They don't take reservations. It is the new kid on the block at the moment, so you may want to wait till the hub-bub dies down. They said that they serve till midnight though. Cool!

Must stop the protein madness! But, I am quite comfortable eating this amount and tend to snack on protein. Less beef and more fish?
Maybe I shouldn't worry about it, as things will generally balance out eventually, all by themselves.

The day started off normally and then I totally lost my wits. A TOM reaction with a two day lag. Aargh@! No, it's those active smiley heads to my left that made me do it!
I wanted dairy and artificial sweetener, I ate dairy and artificial sweetener. I knew I would feel like crap, and now I do. It's good to be reminded of why I stopped eating dairy.
Ahh, artificial sweetener embedded in dairy. The LC methadone.
Things to remember for next month: Up the magnesium intake a week before and eat canned tuna with mayonnaise.
The sun will rise on another day...
Be prepared for water weight on top of water weight. LOL!

Just goes to prove my thoughts that the Calorie Boost days of this Study-project would be very easy to achieve if high-fat dairy foods were permitted. Too easy in fact, since a huge whack o' calories and saturated fat can be consumed with a very small amount of food.
re - TOM, and fluid retention ... cutting way back on sodium and upping the potassium will definitely help. Sodium & potassium are fluid-balance partners. After the study ... might want to consider keeping up the extra Tbsp Udo's oil for the days prior and during. Use the EFA's prescriptively. I know I will be ;)

I am going to continue with the oil on a daily basis. My skin has started to look really good and I attribute it to that. My brain function may have improved somewhat, but it's hard to tell.
The tuna with mayo during and upping magnesium prior was something I read about. It may work.

Today was the 1 year anniversary of Tobias becoming a part of the family. A grand celebration was in order. He's now wrecking a squeaky ball that he recieved as a gift.
I am beginning to see what works and what doesn't work. Obviously, entertaining, eating out and bingeing on dairy don't work as witnessed by week 1 and week three. Eating a great assortment of food in one day doesn't work, not to mention the grand uppage of carbs and calories that comes with it. I've also discovered that tofu is not a good thing for me to eat, probably something to do with it being a protein as well as a carb. I don't eat beans, so why do I eat tofu? Berries are not a good idea either.
Four pounds were lost during test drive week and four more during week two. I ate more simply during those weeks.
Change eating behaviour, scrutinize and learn! Einstein said it best.

I was starving today! Last night, I couldn't wait to go to sleep so I could wake up and have a chicken leg. Was also feeling kind of sluggish and had a headache all day till I ate the last meal.
Inspired by Doreen's broccoli recipe, I remembered an Italian dish of broccoli slow cooked with chilies, anchovies and garlic until it is falling apart. I used a whole head of broccoli and was able to eat half. Ate a non green vegetable but am OK with it because the carbs from the broccoli and chard totalled 27 grams.
My vegetarian sister told me yesterday that she has been following the Soya Zone after we saw each other in Toronto and discussed it. She has lost 4 pounds and feels much clearer. I'm tickled pink!
I dread and enjoy Fat Fast. A big water drop happens during it, probably gained from all the stuff I eat on the 3 Regular LC days - especially last week!.
I would probably enjoy it more if I actually made teeny, fatty meals for myself instead of eating bowls of jellied white slop, but I'm afraid I won't be able to control the teeny, fatty portions.
Still mulling over all the changes that yesterdays unbelievable tragedy will bring...It is almost too large to wrap my brain around it. :(

I'm thinking a mini-study or tapering off process would allow some testing cuz in the back of my head is forming the notion that
- FF forces ketosis restart using bodily body fat as insufficient energy intake (kickstart)
- CB of course tells metabolism no famine in offing so pending or slight drop, if any, is reversed
- M&VF (meat & veg fast or Stillman) drops energy intake again, with no protein loss yet triggered (it may well take longer than ketosis start) and no appetite issues (enhances or triggers glucagon/ketosis cycle whilst allowing gluconeogenesis hence no hunger)
etc. etc.
Soooooooo :daze: I'm thinking a mini study 1 week with 2 M&VFs (no FF) and with CB target set to 13Xgoal and see what happens.
Comments? Should this be in the main thread?

Will you be posting a 'coles notes version' of the study? I've been reading along and picking up ideas here and there for later on down the road (and for now). A set of guidelines or some kind of FAQ would be very helpful.... of course that would entail more work  ... just an idea.

I'm not sure about FF kick starting ketosis because - according to Dr. A - you have to be in ketosis already for it to work.
Now my danger spots are obvious to me.
I'm thinking of doing two all protein days a week, but something like an all-salmon or all-beef day to keep the calories up.
The discussion should be moved into it's own thread since it's almost the end of the study.

I'm thinking that everyone can post their own thoughts with what worked, what didn't work etc.
Everyone eats so differently that it would be hard to make generalizations.
I started my own spreadsheet today for all the technical stuff.

I have caught a few colds since beginning this WOL, but they have been mild in comparison to what they used to be. I would spend two weeks afterwards coughing my head off and it doesn't happen any more. There are so many benefits to this WOL. Having this forum is one of the biggest! :D

I am totally the same with "colds" now too Karen. As you said that's definitely a BIG benefit to this lifestyle. I am one of those bronchical types...who coughs for weeks if it hits.

Last day, and a bewildering day of eating it was. Went to a benefit event on Vancouver Island which was "grazing style" then out to dinner at Vij's in Vancouver, one of my favourite restaurants. I'm still trying to figure out the analysis for the day.
I am very happy with the results of the study. If I count the trial week, it's 10 pounds in 5 weeks. If I don't, it's 6 pounds in 4. I've got nothing to complain about!
Time to start working on conclusions...

Karen, did you make the mint chutney or was that at Fields n Farms?
Speaking of which, I very much wanted to attend but was a bit taken aback with the entry fee...

Anyone who wants one, just PM me OR I could collect the numbers from y'all, plug 'em in and see if some kind of spiffy chart can be produced to get a visual ...
(B) Want to compare, Karen? I'll send you mine if you send me yours :D

We all made it and are all wiser for the experience. Whoo-hoo!
I'll take a copy of your spiffy Excel spreadsheet!
The mint chutney was at Vij's, a "modern" Indian restaurant in Vancouver. It's one of my faves, but like all of my faves, there is sugar lurking everywhere!
I got no tips for messin' about in the kitchen. It seems like there is always dining out, entertaining and fooling around with food on weekends. It slows progress, but I love that part of my life.
Feast of Fields was funsville. I have quite a few friends on the Island who are in the food business. Next year, you can come as my guest.

but I'd be VERY pleased to be trundling about grazing on an autumn day, and goggling groupie-like at all the food pros... :hyper:
I'm firing off the spreadsheet right now, have fun with it.
The green zones are calculated so no numbers entered there. All the white zones within the big box of WeekN/DayN are pretty obvious, let me know if I can tell you anything else...
