UN Probes Industry Financing of Carbohydrate Report
Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- A United Nations agency is investigating a British Broadcasting Corp. report that the food and drinks industry financed a 1998 UN study that found no evidence of a link between carbohydrates and obesity.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization, based in Rome, halted cooperation with the Washington-based International Life Sciences Institute, whose members include Nestle SA, the world's biggest foodmaker, and Coca-Cola Co., the No. 1 soft-drinks maker.
The BBC's ``Panorama'' television program, broadcast Oct. 10, said the institute contributed $40,000 toward the cost of the UN's Expert Consultation on Carbohydrates in Nutrition. Another $20,000 came from the World Sugar Research Organization, based in Reading, England, and financed by sugar makers such as Tate & Lyle Plc.
