Slim with a starter

IF YOU want to lose weight, have a starter. A new study has discovered that if you eat a first course of either salad or fruit, you will end up consuming fewer calories — without even thinking about it.
The study, in the latest Journal of the American Dietetic Association, asked 42 women regularly to have lunch and decide whether to choose a salad as starter. When the women started with three cups of salad, they ended up consuming 12 per cent fewer calories overall.

And it is not only greens that have the pre-filling effect, says the lead researcher, Barbara Rolls. A low-calorie dish of fruit does the trick too.

For a main course, why not go Mediterranean-style? Previous studies have shown how eating food rich in vegetable oil, nuts, fish and garlic can help to fend off heart disease but new research shows that it also appears to prevent gallstones.

Up to one in three women and one in four men suffer from them. The study of 45,756 men in this week’s Annals of Internal Medicine found that Mediterranean diets cut their gallstone risk by nearly a fifth. Cholesterol seems to cause many stones.

But if you are aiming for a happily healthy meal, don’t suddenly cut out post-prandial coffee. You could fall victim to caffeine withdrawal syndrome, says a study review of more than 170 years of research.

The symptoms include headaches and difficulty concentrating, say researchers at Johns Hopkins University. They want the condition to be officially recognised in the next edition of America’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
