I am insulin resistant, on metformin and hypothyroid.

My question, w/IR, the goal, I was told by a nutritionist, is to minimize the # times/day that I cause a spike in insulin which can be caused by eating. Since Atkins is low carb, does this mean that I can freely eat several times a day (vs just 3) and not worry about my insulin spiking?

Also, I'm interested in carb cycling, and was considering cycling between CAD (for carb up) and Atkins for carb down. Is there anyone w/successful experience who is both IR and Hypo?

The way I understand it, (be sure to get a more senior response as I'm by no means an authority on the issue,) that true LC foods do not have much affect on blood sugar levels and don't cause insulin spikes. I've heard many reference whether their blood sugar spiked to determine how truly LC something is.

I'd stay away from sugar alchohols and such, but plain old fish and meat with a true 0 carb content, and eggs in moderation, shouldn't affect blood sugar that much "I think."

There's lots of guru's on this site that will answer you more fully. I swear some of them have Ph.D's in dietary planning. :)

In fact, eating small meals often will help avoid insulin spikes. And as you say, eating low carb will too.
Many of us have found that eating like this improves our metabolism and weight loss too.
