A question for our resident chefs,

Are fresh coriander and cilantro the same thing?

I love the flavour of cilantro but I notice some recipes call for coriander in such a way that I know they don't mean the powdered brown stuff in a jar so I've been using cilantro. Is this correct?

Clarification on this would be most appreciated. thanks.

They are indeed!

For some reason, West Coasters call it cilantro, probably from the California influence. When I moved here from the East I had to get used to calling it cilantro because no one new what I was talking about. They also call shrimp prawns, and think of shrimp as very small prawns. Go figure! :D

Thanks Karen! I guess things really are a little different out here on the wet coast.
