I have been on cytomel for my hypothyroid for 3 years. They now have stopped making this wonderful drug. Can anyone tell me anything that I can go on that is the same if not better.
When I started taking the cytomel it was like a miracle for me I felt so much better and lost tons of weight. Now I have been off this drug for 3 weeks and the same old things are coming back to haunt me, weight gain memory is going hair is losing its shine and falling out. I have been searching for an answer to this for days now. I get lost on the internet when trying to search for this info. If anyone can help me out I would be gratefull
thanks nicad22.

Cytomel is liothyronine, triiodothyronine or T3 (different names for the same thing). I didn't know they'd stop making the brand cytomel, but you should still be able to get generic liothyronine.
If your doctor won't prescribe it for some reason, (hard to see why when you have been so well on it), you can buy it from www.myrxforless.com, it costs $12.95 for 100 tablets 25mcg. You could have been on a lot less than this, so you might need to cut the tablets.
What has your doctor said about just stopping taking T3? It doesn't seem to make sense.
I'm taking Armour, which is a mixture of T3 and T4. I have only been taking it for about 5 days, so its a bit too soon to tell. I don't feel amazingly better, but then, I don't feel awful either. My hair, skin and periods still need to sort out, but I have average energy and brain function - still think these could be better, but might not be on the right dose or might just need longer on it.
Will let you know how it goes.
Take care and keep in touch, Jay

P.S i've just been onto the thyroid support forum http://thyroid.about.com and there isn't anything there about cytomel having been discontinued, which I would have thought there would have been, if it had.
I think I might check what you're being told here!
Let us know what you find out.
Jay

I was so happy when I say your reply. Sometimes you feel that if you dont research things like this yourself you are at the doctors mercy.

Since that post I have found a drugstore in Hamilton who makes the cytomel.
I was so excited about it. I not sure if it is covered by my plan or not., I really do not care if it is I wiill pay anything to get back on this drug.
Thankyou for the web site where I can buy it but I am in Canada I am not sure if they will let this sort of thing over the border.
I have no idea why the cytomel works so good for me Iam one that takes what I am given and it works great. The pharmist I talked to yesterday told me they used to put people on this drug years agol ffor depression??????????
Anyway going to read the things you put in your post and once again thankyou for taking the time to send me this.. nicad22 Canada
