PM names head of Canada's new public health agency

WINNIPEG - Prime Minister Paul Martin was in Winnipeg Friday
to introduce Dr. David Butler-Jones as the country's new chief
public health officer.

Butler-Jones will head the new Public Health Agency of
Canada. The agency will be based in Winnipeg, but
Butler-Jones says it's too early to know if that will mean
more jobs moving to the city.

"The plan is not to move people who are currently living and
working in Ottawa out of Ottawa. This is a pan-Canadian agency
with people across the country," he says.

The new agency is modelled after the U.S. Centres for Disease
Control in Atlanta. A second office in Ottawa will co-ordinate
the efforts of federal departments on emergency planning,
preparedness and response. Six regional centres will focus on
specific public health issues.

"One of the early things we need to do as they're developing
where this agency goes is looking at what are the additional
people, resources, expertise that is needed, and where is it
best placed to serve the country?" says Butler-Jones.

Butler-Jones was the former chief medical officer in
Saskatchewan from 1995 to 2002. He was also a member of the
National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health, which
called for a national public health body.

Prime Minister Martin says the agency is another step in
providing the best possible system for ensuring the health and
safety of Canadians.

Judging by his physical size and the fact that he appears to
be grossly overweight, I don't think he personally understands
anything about diet, maintaining weight, and good health
derived from diet.

I haven't looked yet as I am off line as I write this. If he
is grossly overweight he be classed as obese or even
morbidly obese.

What you say reminds me of my observations of the EU
commissioner David Bryne. Who is either high end over-weight
or low end obese. Perhaps we can send them a life time supply
of "all you can eat" ice cream or ice milk:-) I jest.
