I know that the Spanish word for pork rinds is "Chicharrones"... As I walked through the international section of my local grocer, I saw a bag in the mexican food section labeled "Chicharrones". But they didn't look quite right. On further inspection, it seems that the main ingredient was flour and they looked like oversized corn chips on steroids. The label showed a carb count as high as any chips or Cheetos.
Just a note of warning... always be on your guard!

Weird!!! I hate the taste of pork rinds so I can see no reason to try to simulate them  . I use them for coating on chicken and fish and that's it!
Thanks for the warning, tho - who woulda thunk???

Awe....I can't eat pork and when I first saw this thread, I thought maybe they had come out with fake pork rinds that weren't really pork, yet still crunchy and carbless. Oh well....I did like hearing that Nikkil hates the taste of pork rinds, so maybe I'm not missing anything anyhow! :)

I don't like the taste of them either Galatia, there is an aftertaste of lard that I find most unappealing, even if you add spices to it and try to cover it up, it's still there, even crushed and used as a coating mix it's still there.

I also just cannot get over the fact that they're deepfried pig skin - *willies*
When I crush them for coating on chicken strips or fish, I add 1/2 a cup of grated parmesan and smear the meat with mayo first before I press it into the pork rind/parmesan mixture. I put the pieces on a foil-lined, Pam-sprayed baking sheet and bake it until it's crispy. I don't get a "lard" aftertaste at all, but that's me :)
Galatia - I thought the thread was going to be about non-pork lc rinds and was excited for a friend of mine who's LCing and she's Muslim....

I tried pork rinds too and I didn't like them. I gave them away. I wish I had kept them now, using them for dipping chicken in sounds good. Thanks Peg

My apologies for gathering the pork rind haters in excitement of a replacement. I was just trying to point out another place where the consumer gets duped into buying something that isn't what you think it is.
If I find a worthwhile "pigless" pork rind, I'll let you guys know... ;)

I have seen "fried chicken skin" in bags near the pork rinds at my grocery store. I haven't bought any yet because they were a little pricey, but they looked like pork rinds, only a little thinner.
I bet they are good!
