Not generally. No one needs to test their liver function unless the doctor suspects a problem or infection.

Low carbing does NOT hurt or damage either liver or kidneys UNLESS there is some pre-existing disease in those organs.

Why do you think you need it? Or does your doctor?

Ditto, if you have liver problems, they were there before you began the low carb way of eating. A healthy liver and gall bladder are supposed to act as filters. It is why we have these important organs. People who have problems in the past will find that their liver is not working well enough to handle their job. This should not be ignored. If you know that you have problems then discuss this with your doctor. However, it is possible to do a low carb lifestyle with a faulty liver but you should avoid the earlier phases and read more information about this.

I've had my liver chemistry checked twice since I've started low-carbing. No problems were found. The tests were part of a health fair where lots of blood chemistry items were checked. Also the kidney tests were normal.

Once you hit a certain age, most docs do routine blood work with a yearly physical. Usually kidney and liver functions are checked along with BS, elecetrolyles, etc.

Thanks to all of you for your info. My hubby went to the Dr.s and told the nurse that I was doing Atkins and she said to tell me to make sure I get my liver and kidney's checked often. I had blood work done about a year ago and everything was okay then, except the nurse called and said my sugar was high.I have been to the doctors twice since then and mentioned my high sugar and they don't understand why I was told that. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Again, thanks a lot. Peg

I've been low carbing most of the past 6 years.

I've been in EXCELLENT health during that time with great blood work at every check-up. I've also come through 2 major surgeries with all the anaesthetics and medications that go along with those. And my liver performed wonderfully during these stresses and challenges.

So don't worry. It's a very common "fable" that low carbing damages your organs. NOT EVEN ONE case of such damage has EVER been reported. Don't you think there's be lots of us in hospital if it were true?
