I was amazed to find this forum! It's so good to know that I'm not the only one going through something like this. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism after my son's birth about 7 years ago. I'd been taking Synthoid up until about a year ago. I moved to Australia and they don't carry that brand here, so my doctor put me on Oroxine 150mg daily. I have packed on 40 pounds over the last year and am still gaining. I've been telling my doctor for that long now that something isn't right.I eat well (low carb, low gi) and exercise 5-6 days a week (walking briskly 2.8k/day, hand weights morning and night).I eat better and exercise more than most people I know. They've checked my glucose, cholesterol, the hormone that indicates Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and a few more and say they are fine. This can't be normal! I can't just keep buying new clothes when I get too fat to wear the old ones each couple of months. I'm now up to 180 pounds. I don't know what else to do. It's mentally draining knowing that I'm constantly gaining weight and nobody will listen. I even kept a diary for 1 1/2 months of everything I ate, drank and any exercise I did before going to an Endocrinologist 2 months ago. He looked at it and asked if I were a dietician because I seemed to be eating all the right things. He just told me no carbs after 5 and use the hand weights and I will have lost 10cm by my next visit. It's now past the time to go back and it hasn't worked and I've gained a few more pounds and cm's in the process. Help! Any suggestions?

Oroxine is a brand of levothryoxine sodium (T4). 150 mcg is a middle of the range dosage. How much Synthroid were you taking? If you were taking more Synthroid than 150 mcg (.15 mg), you may need more of the Oroxine. Also, you need to know what TSH levels your docs think are "normal".

Hi,

I’ve included the information imediatly below just in case anyone else may find it useful.
The other info is for you to consider in conversation along with your qualified alternative health practitioner
What causes hypothyroidism?
The common cause is due to an 'autoimmune disease'. The immune system normally makes antibodies to attack bacteria, viruses, and other 'bugs'. In people with autoimmune diseases, the immune system makes antibodies against part(s) of the body. Most people with hypothyroidism make antibodies which attack their own thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is then not able to make enough thyroxine, and hypothyroidism gradually develops. It is thought that something triggers the immune system to make antibodies against the thyroid. The 'trigger' is not known.
Other causes are uncommon. For example:
• rare hormone or gland problems which affect the thyroid gland.
• a side effect to some medicines. (For example, amiodarone and lithium).
• surgery or radioactive treatment to the thyroid gland for other conditions.
• some children are born with an underactive thyroid gland (congenital hypothyroidism).
Now if you are not suffering from any of the uncommon causes then it stands to reason that you may well be suffering from the continuation or aftermath of a virus or bacterial attack.
These pesky little devils often outstay their welcome unless you do something about it. Your Doctor- unless they are very progressive, will not have the knowledge to deal with these infections nor advise on the remedial action required. They will if anything offer progressively stronger and stronger courses of Antibiotics. Not good at all!
I assume that you are taking an adequate supply of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. If not- then it might be a good idea to start ASAP.
The second thing is to remember that body fat is very high in water content so we need to get rid of some of this too. (as an aside I guess your drinking enough- 8pints plus a day of good quality water otherwise the body fights to retain it)
In order to aid the free exchange of fluids across membranes, MSM could be taken. In this case the higher dose type of 1200mg
To help clear your body of the bacterial and viral attacks then some sort of oxygen therapy would be the most effective. One of the most relevant of these would be treatment with Hydrogen Peroxide. There is a fair amount of research going on this area, particular in relation to the thyroid.
One site you might like to look at is http://curezone.com/forums/f.asp?f=25 it contains a fair amount of info and links that I think you will find interesting.
The only Aussie oxygen therapist I have listed in my contact book are here at http://www.taringa.com/. They might know of a TRAINED-CERTIFIED practitioner closer to you who can help.
On last thing, It is not uncommon for a thyroid problem to develop out of a severe Candida infection. (yes really) If you have had any of the following typical Candida symptoms, which may include depression, anxiety, recurring irritability, heartburn, indigestion, lethargy, extreme food and environmental allergies, acne, dry, flaky, itchy skin, jock itch, migraine headaches, recurring cystitis/vaginal infections, premenstrual tension, and menstrual problems."

Saliva Test - for Candida (Candidiasis) Yeast Disorder

You can try this simple test to see if you have candida: First thing in the morning, before you put ANYTHING in your mouth, get a clear glass. Fill with water and work up a bit of saliva, then spit it into the glass of water. Check the water every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour. If you have a problem that THREELAC can help with, you will see strings (like legs) travelling down into the water from the saliva floating on the top, or "cloudy" saliva will sink to the bottom of the glass, or cloudy specks will seem to be suspended in the water. If there are no strings and the saliva is still floating after at least one hour, you probably have candida under control.
Threelac is a brilliant cure for Candida infections.

Hope the above helps to, if nothing else, eliminate potential causes

I know what you mean.....thyroid is such a pain. I don't know if thyroxine has t3 or not...but make sure you get on Armour which also has t3 as well as the T4 that is found in synthroid. Synthroid is very bad to take because it causes bone loss and osteoperosis.

Most people feel best with a tsh of between 1-2 so find out what that is ok?

I work out about 3 hours per day and eat around 1300 calories 20 carbs per day and am having trouble getting those last 10 pounds off...I know how you feel..there must be an answer.

Yes, you definitely need to get on Armour Thyroid. It is the best in my opinion. I am on Armour plus compound T4 because my Free T4 levels were still low. I go back in a few weeks to get blood work again. It seems to be helping, I'm starting to lose weight again after dealing with gaining and losing for the last 6 months. So, far the last couple of weeks I have been losing and not gaining. I do walk 3-4 times a week, 3-4 miles depending on how I'm feeling that day. And I try to do 15 minutes miles so I'm always checking my time when I reach a mile. I hope you get your thyroid straightened out.
Take Care,
