I AM NEW TO THE FORUM SO PLEASE EXCUSE ME IF THIS TOPIC WAS ADDRESSED RECENTLY.

n the low carbs tip section.

Specifically http://www.lowcarb.ca/tips/tips010.html it lists a formula of:
Total Calories less Fat Grams multiplied by 9 less Protein Grams multiplied by 4. Dividing this result by 4 will yield actual carb grams.

I applied this formula to Coors Edge Low Carb beer and came out with 22.8 grams of carbs.

Also Atkins Morning Start Bars come out to 18 carbs each!!!!!

I realize some rounding likely happens on nutrition labels, but a difference of 20 carb grams is HUGE.

Any thoughts?

yeah this has been discussed, but i understand your concern completely! "net carbs" is completely up for debate; these companies can only get away with calling their products "low carb" because of this term. however...i do have a more applicable formula than the one you describe. sugar alcohol i count as slightly over half (eg. if a bar has 13 g. sugar alcohol, i would count 7 of the carbs), and fiber is completely safe to deduct, as most on this forum will agree. atkins and some other companies use glycerine, which is a strange carbohydrate. some people seem to have no effects from it, while others do find a loss of ketosis. it's an individual thing really.

my advice is to stay away from sugar alcohols as best you can, but don't worry a bit about fiber.
