What is fractionated palm kernel oil? Is this similar to hydrogenated oils? For some reason I get the feeling it is on par with calling sugar by its less obvious pseudonym.
Also, I need info on oils. I am trying to stay away from corn, canola and the like. I have a small understanding of why these are bad, but the knowledge has yet to crystallize. Does anyone know of any good sites with information such as which ones are bad out of the bottle, or upon cooking?
Thanks in advance….

I'd say you were right. A simple net search using google.com found MANY sites for these words. Dr. Weil says that FPKO is the LEAST desirable form of the oil.

The problem with Canola oil, aka Rape-seed oil, is that it contains small amounts of a very toxic natural substance, can't remember what. It IS removable, but the marketers of Canola Oil (from Canada, e.g.) chose not to do so as it would have made it prohibitively expensive at the time, or so they thought. Nowadays, 20 or so years later, with people paying premium prices for olive and peanut oils, it would seem to me to be a market for such a product. The book Diet For A Small Planet, published over 30 years ago had a very good discussion on fats and oils. Memory is dim, but there was mention of some "ratio" that you wanted as high as possible. Other than olive oil, the best vegetable oil available at the time was Safflower oil, with a ratio of ~40. Butter and other animal-related fats had ratios in the 70-90 area. Corn oil had a ratio of around 10, Soybean, ~17-20.
