Hi there everyone- Today is my first day trying Atkins. I would like to know a few things though.
I'm reading the Atkin's book- reading it right now but I'm not finished.
I want to read a few others like the sugar buster's book, south beach diet etc.
Just to find what I like the best. I'm assumeing all of them are based on low carb
For right now just to get the ball rolling I'm starting on Atkins.
I thought I would try this out for 2 weeks (which is suppose to be the induction period) and see how that works.
I read that some people loose a lot on it and others do not loose much.
What factors has worked for those of you who have lost 10 pounds or more during induction?
I've also going shopping tonight with my Atkin's approved induction food list and would like to know if anyone knows any food that is not listed on the list that is ok during induction?
I'm also slowing getting into excercise. I have some lower back problems that started in June but I do not know the factors that contributed to my back hurting but I do know that it has not gone away so I hope losing weight will help.
My history with my weight was contributed in the past from depression. I do not eat a lot of sugar (candy, cakes etc) but I do eat a lot of breads, pasta, rice etc and do not excercise.
I know I need to be I figure I will start slow on this since my back hurts all the time. I have started walking.
a friend of mine recomended me looking at this forum but she has asked me not to say who she is but if I can get help I'm willing to do anything.
I have gone to a chiropractor who popped my back and I really do not think that will help it. I maybe wrong but it scared me and it seemed to make it hurt worse.
I then went to my doctor who gave me mucle relaxers (sp?) which didn't help.
I know I need to go back but I'm sure my weight is a factor in this.
Ok well I'll stop yapping. My name is Lisa by the way if anyone here really did read this book I wrote.

:) I read your book.
Welcome to the board... and to Atkins. I'm definately biased, but I think that Atkins is a great plan to sart on... and continue to use all the way to goal, but sometimes when you get close to goal, trying something different and more customized to yoru body can help if you get stalled.
To keep it simple, it's best to stick with what's on the list. Try to avoid any processed foods....especially bars, shakes, etc, made to entice low-carb dieters. The more natural, the better.
The keys to the most successful Induction are:
Relying mostly on whole natural foods. (meat and veggies)
Drinking atleast 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water. (IE: 200 lbs = 100 oz)
Taking a high-potency multi-vitamin/mineral supplement WITHOUT Iron
When it comes to the actual weight you will lose, everyone's bodies are different. Don't be disappointed if you don't drop 10 pounds... as long as you feel better and lose something. It's normal to lose approximately 10% of the total weight that you need to lose during the first 2 weeks.
If you have 50 pounds to lose, then expect about a 5 pound loss.
If you have 100 pounds to lose, then expect about a 10 pound loss.
But your results may vary.
Don't rely solely on the scale.... take your measurements too. Sometimes the scale doesn't move, but the inches melt away. Knowing where you began will make the new measurements alot more fun when you can see how much you have already improved.
Good luck.

Hi SkinnySoon-
Thanks for taking to the time to read all of that, need a break?
What books do you recommend? I can see your point about starting this and trying to go on to other things. I'll revisit that Idea later.
My main concern even though the book keeps saying that this will not happen is that I will follow the atkin's plan and end up gaining weight since I'm eating all this meat and cheese.
I know that there is alot of veggies as well but I'm not use to eating a lot of meat and cheeses even though I love them.

Hi Lisa!
I know what you mean! Eating mainly HIGH fat foods scared me too! Once you understad the science behind the LC way of life it's not AS scary, but I think we've all been so programed over the last 20 years (LOW FAT, LOW FAT...) that we can't help slipping back into that mode (even though we KNOW that doesn't work for us).
I would recommend you read 'How I Gave Up My Lowfat Diet and Lost 40 Pounds' by Dana Carpender. She covers all the main LF diets in her book and offers advice as to what may or may not work for you (she is also REALLY funny, which makes reading the book SO much easir :D ). She also writes a LC Ezine and has written several really good cookbooks. Her website is www.HoldTheToast.com.
Good luck!!

I know it's hard. I spent most of my life making fun of the Atkins diet while I educated myself as many aspects of nutrition and bodybuilding as I could. I never would have thought that after sitting down with DANDR one day, I'd switch my philosophies 360 degrees.
You have to eat the fat if you want to lose weight on a low carb diet. Just "go with it" and give it time to prove itself to you. I was the biggest skeptic, and now I'm a firm believer in low-carb eating.

Hi. Yes you do eat alot of meat, but not alot of cheese for the first two weeks. Cheese can cause stalls for alot of people so be carefull of how much you are eating. Good luck, you can do it!!

Hi Lisa,
Like you, my back pain has been an issue. It started a few years ago, mostly in the morning when I woke up..then eased up through the day. I had no idea where it came from, bad mattress maybe? Being overweight? Then I saw a chiropractor for a few months, and I swear it aggitated it to the point where it felt worse. Then one day I sneezed...and it dropped me to the floor and thats when I really blew it out. Then came surgery after I couldn't take the 'drain on my life' any more. The surgery eliviated the sciatic (sp) pain down my leg, but not the pain... or the numbness from my left knee to my toes (a result of my sneeze). He'd recommended muscle relaxers too... they did ok, they took the edge off... but who wants to be loopy throughout their day?
Then depression set in... I finally gave in to the pleas of my family and saw a therapist, who in turn sent me to the pscyhiatrist who medicated. He put me on a constant dose of 800 mg Motrin ... one with breakfast, one with lunch, one with dinner... AND I had to start walking. After 2 weeks, I promise you I had about an 80% improvement.
So for me... it was the walking (strengthening my back muscles) and the constant dose of Motrin that got me back on track. (altough its always made me nervous about constantly having medication in me... so I've cut down to just one Motrin a day).
I hope this helps in some way, keep up your walking and good luck to you.
~Michelle
